City of Peterborough Seeks Public Input Sought For Parkhill Road West Reconstruction Project

As Parkhill Road West between Rubidge and George Street is expected to close for construction, the City of Peterborough is seeking public input on detour routes to handle traffic during the sewer and road work announced Wednesday.

File Photo.

Construction is projected between early spring/summer into the late fall next year, pending budget approval.

Residents can review three traffic management options and select their option on Connect Peterborough. The project page also includes information on the project scope, plans and additional resources.

Anyone can send questions and feedback through the online question tool on the page. Hard copies are available at City Hall, 500 George St. N. Feedback and information can be sent to the project team by email to mcummings@peterborough.ca or by phone at 705-742-7777 ext. 1503.

The construction includes installation of new storm sewers, sanitary sewers, water main, curbs, sidewalks and road paving from Aylmer Street North to George Street North. The work from Rubidge Street to Aylmer Street North includes new water main and road paving and new surface asphalt from George Street North to Water Street.

The general goals of this project are to:

  • Replace aging underground and aboveground infrastructure

  • Improve traffic flow at the Parkhill Road/George Street intersection by introducing a dedicated east-bound right-turn lane onto George Street

  • Improve pedestrian facilities

The City’s Transportation Division is conducting a traffic safety review of the intersections of Parkhill Road and Aylmer Street and Parkhill Road and Bethune Street. The review is running in conjunction with the Parkhill Road reconstruction project and there will be a separate public consultation process to get feedback from the neighbourhood.

A notice will be provided in advance of the consultation. The results of the review may be incorporated into the reconstruction work for Parkhill Road.

GO Bus Services Unavailable as Transit Workers Strike

More than 2,200 GO Transit bus operators, station attendants and other employees began striking on Monday after being unable to reach an agreement with GO operator Metrolinx.

The union says 81 per cent of GO employees voted against a previous contract offer from Metrolinx, leading to the walkout.

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587 says its concern is with job security, and hiring connect workers from outside the company.

Metrolinx, the provincial transit agency that oversees GO Transit and the Union Pearson Express, says they will remain open to bargaining during the strike.

GO bus services will be unavailable during the strike. GO trains will continue to operate.

More information to come.

Peterborough Transit Service Changes as of Oct. 30

Peterborough Transit is adjusting some services starting Friday, using On Demand Transit Service and helping to ensure the provision of consistent, reliable service.

File photo.

Changes include increasing the use of On Demand Transit Service (PTBOnDemand) in the evenings to replace some regularly scheduled services, reducing some community bus services and some trip time adjustments to streamline transfers between routes.

PTBOnDemand will replace some regular service routes on weekday evenings in addition to Saturday evening for a more efficient delivery of transit. On Demand Transit makes trips more convenient by offering a direct ride for customers to locations closer to where they want to go without the need to transfer between buses.

On Demand Transit does not require users to have a cell phone or data. Customers can call 705-745-5801 or use the PTBOnDemand app to schedule their trip by identifying their pick-up and drop-off transit stops. The route planning software determines the route based on the destinations in coordination with other customer requests with similar destinations.

Updated route schedules and service details are posted at peterborough.ca/TransitRoutes.

Warsaw Road Swing Bridge Temporarily Closed For Two Weeks Beginning Nov. 7

The Warsaw Road Swing Bridge under advisement of Parks Canada is closed from Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. to Nov. 18 at 2 p.m., announced on Thursday.

File Photo.

The bridge is located on Parkhill Road East between Armour Road and Television Road.

The closure is for completing repairs to the bridge’s metal grating deck. Traffic control measures and detour routes will be in place during the bridge’s closure.

Pedestrians and cyclists using the west pathway along the canal — between Parkhill Road East and Woodbine Avenue — may have occasional interruptions the week before and after construction for site preparation and teardown. This work will not impact traffic flow on Parkhill Road according to Parks Canada.

The sidewalk on the bridge will be accessible except for roughly two days at the start and end of the closure to remove and reinstall the grating panels.

Peterborough Transit Making Service Changes Amid Challenges Starting Oct. 30

Peterborough Transit increasing the use of On Demand Transit Service in off-peak hours, trip time adjustments and reducing some community bus services starting on Oct. 30.

The changes are to help ensure consistent, reliable transit service while the service continues to deal with high rates of absenteeism and the challenging labour market according to the City of Peterborough. Those factors have contributed to the need to regularly cancel scheduled trips on routes.

On Demand Transit uses smart technology to move around the city, adjusting the bus route based on where customers are leaving from and where they need to get to.

It was a pilot program in a limited area of the City since March 30 and during Saturday evening service from 8 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Beginning Oct. 30, On Demand Transit will replace some fixed routes throughout the City in off-peak hours to better serve customers.

Customers can download the PTBOnDemand app for their smartphones or tablets and create an account or call Peterborough Transit at 705-745-5801 to book a same-day trip.

When a customer requests a trip,  the system will look for the next trip available based on the customer’s trip pick-up and drop-off locations and number of people travelling together according to the City of Peterborough.

Customers who book their trip using the PTBOnDemand app are able to track the real-time location of the vehicle including information on when they will be picked up and dropped off.

Please visit the Peterborough Transit website www.peterborough.ca/OnDemand for additional details about PTBOnDemand.

Customers with questions on the route schedules can contact Peterborough Transit directly by phone at 705-745-0525 or by email at transitoperations@peterborough.ca.

Customers are encouraged to check their schedules and stay up to date with adjustments to Transit routes, including weather delays, service interruptions and cancellations:

Transportation Tomorrow Survey Letters To Be Mailed To Selected Peterborough Households

Peterborough households are asked to participate in the Transportation Tomorrow Survey this fall regarding the travel habits and preferences of residents in the Greater Golden Horseshoe and surrounding areas.

File photo.

Randomly-selected households will receive an invitation letter that will provide them with a secure access code and more information about the survey.

Results will help local and regional governments, as well as the province and transit agencies, make transportation planning and investment decisions.

The Transportation Tomorrow Survey is jointly undertaken by 25 funding agencies, including the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), Metrolinx, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and municipalities across the study area.

Canadian-based research firm R.A. Malatest and Associates Ltd. will conduct the survey on behalf of the participating agencies including the City of Peterborough. The survey has been administered every five years since 1986.

“The Travel Tomorrow Survey data provides City planners information about existing travel patterns and helps plan for future mobility needs for the City,” said Vinod Soman, City of Peterborough senior transportation project manager. “We encourage residents to participate in the survey.”

Survey questions will focus on trip information for each household member including origin, destination, time, reason for travel, mode of transportation and some basic demographic questions.

Residents that did not make any trips can still participate in the survey, and all survey responses will remain anonymous.

The study runs from the fall of 2022 until spring of 2023 and the results will be released in 2024.

Participation in the survey is voluntary, and households can participate by accessing the project website at TTS2022.ca or by calling the survey hotline at 1-877-216-7786.
