The team is wearing special theme jerseys designed by Kyle McDonald of Pioneer Inc. that highlight the names of nearly 200 people battling cancer and feature a special Canadian Cancer Society shoulder crest.

The funds support the Wheels of Hope transportation program provided by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). It connects people to cancer treatments with volunteer drivers and travel cost reimbursements.

All Petes players and coaches will act as ambassadors for the campaign. Family, friends and fans can donate on behalf of a particular player or coach by going online and choosing their name from the dropdown menu on the CCS fundraising website.

Fans can also support the campaign through an in-person silent auction in the North Lobby on game night, a special chuck-a-puck at the second intermission or by purchasing an Official 15th Annual Pink in the Rink t-shirt and/or Anniversary Pin.

Bobcaygeon Brewing Co. has produced a limited edition run of Petes Lager featuring a Pink Can. Each can sold sees 25 cents donated to the Pink in the Rink campaign.

After raising $954,136 over the past 14 years, the Petes announced that this year’s fundraising goal is $50,000. If achieved, the Petes and the Peterborough community will hit $1,000,000 raised in the fight against cancer in Pink in the Rink’s history.

Official game jerseys are available at the Pink in the Rink live post-game auction. Fans are asked to move to the Gibson’s Finest Club Section immediately following the game to participate in the auction. A game ticket is required to take part in the game-worn jersey auction.

A cheque presentation took place at the PRHC on Tuesday, featuring campaign ambassadors, PRHC and Petes staff and Roger the Mascot.

A total of $954,136 has been raised after this year’s campaign. This year’s campaign raised a preliminary fundraising total of $62,600, with donations continuing to roll in after the annual Pink in the Rink game on Feb. 4.

“Through incredible fan support, and the work of our Campaign and Physician Ambassadors, it is exciting to see that the 2023 Pink in the Rink campaign put us within reach of the $1 million fundraising mark,” commented Burton Lee, Petes executive director of business operations. “The Peterborough community did what it does best on February 4 and that is get behind an important cause, all in support and recognition of some truly inspiring hockey moms.”

Five local hockey moms: Dara Gosselin, Jennie Ireland, Elke Rye, Karen Tarkington and Dana Thorn were named Hockey Mom Ambassadors for the 2023 Campaign. They joined Physician Ambassador Dr. Neera Jeyabalan, PRHC Foundation President; CEO Leslie Heighway and Chris Hinze, Minor Hockey Pink in the Rink organizer and husband of late hockey mom Melissa Hinze, on the ice before the 2023 Pink in the Rink Game for a ceremony recognizing all of their cancer journeys.

The Petes will wear their special themed jerseys designed by Kyle McDonald, which highlight the names of nearly 200 people who have battled cancer. The jerseys feature a special PRHC Foundation shoulder crest and design inspired by classic hockey sweaters, which pay tribute to Peterborough’s deep hockey roots and the hockey moms that this year’s campaign is supporting.

Fans can get a sneak peak of the jerseys here.

The official game jerseys are available for purchase at the Pink in the Rink live post-game auction. To take part in the auction, fans are asked to move to the Gibson’s Finest Club Section immediately following the game. A game ticket is required to take part in the game-worn jersey auction.

The 14th annual Pink in the Rink game will celebrate and honour Hockey Moms who have been affected by cancer.

These five local hockey moms have been named campaign ambassadors for this year’s Pink in the Rink campaign:

  • Jennie Ireland

  • Dara Gosselin

  • Elke Rye

  • Karen Tarkington

  • Dana Thorn

Fans can donate to Jennie, Dara, Elke, Karen and Dana through their personalized PRHC Foundation Pink in the Rink fundraising pages, with a charitable tax receipt available for supporters.

The hockey mom ambassadors will be honoured alongside PRHC Physician Ambassador Dr. Neera Jeyabalan during the pre-game ceremony, which will also include a video tribute to hundreds of cancer fighters before the puck is dropped.

Fans can support the campaign through an online auction and an in-person silent auction in the North Lobby on game night. Official Pink in the Rink t-shirts are also on sale leading up to and on game-night.

The limited edition Petes Lager featuring a Pink Can from Bobcaygeon Brewing Co. will donate 25 cents from each can to the Pink in the Rink campaign.

Proceeds from the Pink in the Rink campaign will support cancer care at PRHC. Lesley Heighway, PRHC Foundation President & CEO, says that with cancer volumes on the rise, donors are essential to the hospital’s ability to serve more patients, support earlier diagnosis and ensure safer, more effective treatments close to home.

After raising a total of $900,000 over the past 13 years, the Petes previously announced that this year’s fundraising goal is $50,000, moving the team one step closer to the ultimate goal of $1 million dollar raised to fight cancer in Pink in the Rink’s history.

“The number of patients from Peterborough and the surrounding area who rely on PRHC to support their cancer journey continues to climb,” said Heighway. “It’s events like Pink in the Rink and organizations like the Peterborough Petes – along with the people and businesses who support them –  that fund the tools our experts need to save and improve lives. With your help, we’ll continue investing in vital technology upgrades like our Interventional Radiology suites, where cancer is just one of the conditions treated, and experts perform minimally-invasive biopsies, install intravenous chemotherapy ports, and even offer precise, targeted cancer treatments – safely and quickly so patients can go home sooner.”

Tickets for the 14th annual Pink in the Rink game are sold out. Pending game day and visiting team hold requirements, a very small number of additional tickets may be released for sale on Saturday, February 4 at 1pm through the PMC Grant Thornton Box Office online, in-person, or at (705) 743-3561

Peterborough Petes Celebrating Local Hockey Moms For 14th Annual Pink In The Rink Campaign

The goal for this year’s campaign is $50,000. Proceeds go toward cancer care at (PRHC). Lesley Heighway, PRHC Foundation president and CEO says that with cancer volumes on the rise, donors are essential to the hospital’s ability to serve more patients, support earlier diagnosis and ensure safer, more effective treatments, close to home.

“The number of patients from Peterborough and the surrounding area who rely on PRHC to support their cancer journey continues to climb,” she said. “It’s events like Pink in the Rink and organizations like the Peterborough Petes – along with the people and businesses who support them –  that fund the tools our experts need to save and improve lives.”

Leading up to the game, the Petes are accepting nominations of local hockey moms to be honoured leading up to and during the game.

This is a spin on prior years as annual chairs were selected to spearhead the campaign.

“With the honourary chair model that we used to use, it would be a little bit burdensome on those people,” said Burton Lee, Petes executive director of business operations. “They had lives, they were trying to manage day-to-day, probably still dealing with their cancer journey and on top of that, we were saying 'raise a bunch of money for us, would you?'“

The Petes are accepting orders to purchase a name (up to 200) to be printed on one of their Pink in the Rink game-worn jersey for $20. The Petes will unveil a special jersey with the purchased names at a future date.

Fans can also buy a special edition custom Pink in the Rink t-shirt with any name on the back and donate tickets to cancer survivors or volunteers to attend the game. A live auction will take place after the game to bid on game-worn jerseys.

The Pets have raised $900,000 over the past 13 years as they are closing in on their $1 million milestone.

The new jersey is pink and maroon and has the breast cancer ribbon across both sides of the jersey. The Canadian Cancer Society patch is on the left shoulder and a patch honouring Petes Alumnus and Peterborough media figure Gary “Diller” Dalliday on the right shoulder.

Family and friends’ names who battled cancer are throughout the jersey. The names were purchased by Peterborough community members and all proceeds are donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

“The Pink in the Rink is so much more than a fundraiser,” said Alison Payne, Canadian Cancer Society special events manager. “It celebrates the people in our community that we have lost, who are in the midst of their cancer journey and who have survived.”

A live auction is run after the game where fans can bid on game-worn jerseys but tickets must be purchased in order to participate.

The game is held on Feb. 5 against the Niagara IceDogs with a fundraising goal of over $50,000. All proceeds support the Canadian Cancer Society with a focus on cancer commonly found primarily in women.

"For the first time, the Canadian Cancer Society has shifted their focus to more of their national events so the Petes get to work directly with the Pink in the Rink committee of volunteers to run this event,” said Burton Lee, Petes executive director of business operations.

Petes Alumnus Doug Gibson and sports anchor Meaghan Roy were named as honourary co-chairs for the upcoming event.

"They are two local sports legends if not just straight-up legends,” explained Lee. “We're pretty happy to have them leading the way from a publicity standpoint as we build towards the campaign.”

Fans can also purchase discounted tickets specifically for anyone diagnosed with cancer, cancer survivors, impacted families or volunteers for them to enjoy a Petes game.

"We know that there are so many people here who work tirelessly to help fight cancer but maybe don't get to have a bit of a break sometimes,” said Lee. “For the Pink in the Rink game night, we've offered discounts for anyone who wants to donate to those people who want to come and enjoy the game and maybe take it all in with the community members who also want to end cancer.”

Fans can support this campaign by participating in Euchre Night at Southside Pizzeria and Darling Insurance Chilifest. Other events such as Petes Celebrity Servers at Kelsey's and Montanas will support the cause with dates pending.
