PRHC Community Cigarette Butt Clean Up

Research consistently shows cigarette butts are one of the most littered items in the world. Because of their small size and light weight - they can be easily flushed into storm drains and into our lakes and rivers. Many people don't know that filters contain a plastic called cellulose acetate, which overtime breaks down into microplastics, which can be harmful to wildlife and humans.

Clean Up Peterborough wants to do what we can to pick up cigarette butts across the CIty, educate the community, and work with organizations to install receptacles to reduce cigarette butt litter from ending up in the environment.

Everyone is invited to join us on the PRHC grounds be part of Community Cigarette Butt Clean Up on Saturday September 21 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. We will meet near the main PRHC entrance (not the Emergency doors). People can search for cigarette butts anywhere on PRHC grounds.

Gloves, pick-up pails and litter pickers will be provided – you can bring your own upcycled container if you want as well.

Free Parking will be offered to all volunteers who help with this clean up.

We will be offering several draw prizes for participants - registration at event will be required to be eligible.

This event is supported by the PRHC and the City of Peterborough.
