Wiarton Willie Predicts An Early Spring On Groundhog Day

On Tuesday, Groundhog Day, Wiarton Willie decided that Ontario would see an early spring.

The character of Wiarton Willie has been present in South Bruce Peninsula for 65 years. Locals claim his prediction comes true every year.

Legend says that if the groundhog sees its shadow, it will be scared and return to its burrow. That means six more weeks of winter on the way.

If the groundhog stays outside it will be an early spring.

Groundhog Day is usually celebrated with a large crowd in Wiarton, though due to the pandemic this year the event was closed to the public.

While Willie decided it would be an early spring, Shubenacadie Sam, a groundhog from Nova Scotia, predicted the opposite.

Selwyn Township Lifts Significant Weather Event

The Significant Weather Event declared by the Township of Selwyn has been lifted as of Tuesday.

The decision was made after the township reviewed Environment Canada weather reports and observing current weather conditions, sidewalk and road conditions.

Selwyn reminds everyone that declaring the end of the event does not mean the roads and sidewalks are in good condition. It only means that the Township of Selwyn now feels that the weather has subsided enough that it can meet our required maintenance objective timelines.

Drivers and Pedestrians are reminded to use caution while navigating in winter weather conditions. Selwyn Township’s Public Works crew is working diligently to restore the roads and sidewalks to a safe condition and are continuing with regular winter maintenance activities according to the release.

Significant Weather Event Declared By The City of Peterborough

The City of Peterborough is declaring a Significant Weather Event as an alert of the extreme weather conditions that could pose a danger to the use of city roads, sidewalks and bike lanes announced Monday.

This is the first Significant Weather Event declared by Peterborough for 2022. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

“Declaring a Significant Weather Event is a way to advise residents, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists that conditions on roads, sidewalks and bike lanes can be expected to be delayed compared to typical levels of service,” said John Czerniawski, Public Works operations supervisor.

The City is deploying resources to address road conditions as a result of the storm. Please be cautious on roads, sidewalks and bike lanes during the Significant Weather Event as road conditions can vary drastically during a Significant Weather Event.

Motorists are advised to stay home and only use the roads for necessary travel.

“Crews have been out on streets and sidewalks since 1:30 a.m. working on the roads and all snow clearing resources will continue to be deployed 24 hours a day for this response,” said Czerniawski. “This is not an emergency situation, but the snow clearing work will take some time to complete with the amount of snow that has fallen and continues to come down this morning.”

Snow clearing operations are currently focused on main roads – arterials and collectors – as well as sidewalks. Crews are expected to move into residential streets Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

Municipalities can declare a Significant Weather Event under the Municipal Act, 2001, O. Reg. 239/02, relating to the maintenance of municipal roads, sidewalks and bike lanes. All roadways in the municipality are deemed to be in a state of repair with respect to snow accumulation.

Significant Rainfall Causes Temporary Partial Bypass at the Wastewater Treatment Plant

UPDATE: The temporary partial bypass is over as of 3:25 p.m. Anyone using water from the Otonabee river downstream of the City of Peterborough Wasterwater Treatment Plant should exercise caution for the next 24 hours.

The City of Peterborough issued a statement saying significant rainfall has caused a temporary partial bypass at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, on Thursday.

Rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday has caused a significantly increased volume of water to enter the Wastewater Treatment Plant. As a result of the current conditions, the City of Peterborough Wastewater Treatment Plant has had to start a temporary, partial bypass.

This means that some partially treated sewage is being discharged to the Otonabee River.

Residents downstream of the City of Peterborough who draw water from the river are advised to take necessary precautions and boil water. The boil water advisory does not affect the City of Peterborough.

The City of Peterborough asks residents to reduce water consumption to help alleviate the volume of water flowing through the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. Residents can reduce their water consumption by taking short showers instead of baths, limiting or delaying loads of laundry and turning off taps while brushing teeth and doing dishes.

It Will Not Be A White Christmas In Peterborough

Unless you have a snow making machine, it's highly probable you will not be seeing snow in Peterborough this Christmas. Indeed, the weather is looking downright balmy for this time of year.

CHEX TV Weather Analyst Mike Judson tells PTBOCanada what the heck is going on...

"The big bad Super El Nino is to blame for what will surely be a very green Christmas around our region—even for some places north of the city that saw a dumping of snow over the weekend. We will once again be experiencing well-above seasonal temperatures leading right up to Christmas Day. On Thursday, we are expecting to be back in the double digits! On Friday, things should cool off a bit but still remain above seasonal and we could even see cooler temperatures and flurries on the weekend—just not on Friday."

So there you have it. But hey, at least it's not this...

Special Weather Statement For This Weekend (And It's Not Pretty, But Your Grass Will Be Greener)

A special weather statement has been issued for this weekend, with the chance to see significant rainfall—possibly torrential at times—starting Saturday night.

Environment Canada says a low pressure system arriving Saturday will spread rain across Southern Ontario from west to east throughout the day. In a lot of areas, the rain will continue through Sunday afternoon—and may be heavy at times.

Between 20 to 40 millimetres of rain is expected in Peterborough and the Kawarthas, and significant easterly winds are expected to develop Saturday with gusts generally in the 50 to 70 km/h range.

Basically, your grass is about to get even greener—and longer.

And you will need an umbrella built to withstand heavy rain and wind...

Is This Becoming The Summer Of No Summer In Peterborough Mike Judson?

CHEX TV Weather Analyst Mike Judson (photo by Caley Bedore)

The weather has been the talk of the town this summer—there have been no real "dog days of summer". Sure we've had some heat—to which the Weather Network reminds us not to complain—but it's also been pretty darn cool, eh? Pools aren't being used as much, but sweaters and hoodies are. So is this the Summer Of No Summer? We get the goods in these quotes and facts from CHEX TV Weather Analyst Mike Judson...

ON THE COOL TEMPS... "Once again, we are caught in the pattern of a highly amplified jet stream, dragging down pockets of cold air into the east," Judson explains. "The jet stream is the main conductor of weather patterns and it has not been kind to us this summer. Upper level troughs in our atmosphere have been more persistent and numerous so far this summer, allowing potent cold fronts—like the one this past Sunday—to drive pockets of arctic air into the region."

FUN PETERBOROUGH STATS FOR THE SUMMER SO FAR...

Days with daytime temps ABOVE seasonal average: 15
Days with daytime temps at seasonal average: 3
Days with daytime temps BELOW seasonal average: 21

Average Summer temperature this summer: 24.3 C. The seasonal normal summer temperature is just over 26 C. "So yes, it has been cooler," Judson says.

ON TEMPERATURE RECORD HIGHS (OR LACK THEREOF) THIS SUMMER...
"Out of the 15 days spent over the seasonal average, we did not manage to break any temperature records," says Judson. "In fact, I can't find a date so far this year where a daytime temperature record high was broken."

ON WHETHER THE WEATHER WILL WARM UP IN AUGUST...
"There is much speculation regarding the coming months and the coming winter. Experts are waiting to see if we will see the development of El Nino in the Pacific, but things are still a little early for the long-range winter forecasts to come rolling out. Projections for August are looking pretty meh, at this point."

THE SILVER LINING...
"I happen to really enjoy the cooler temps and we are all saving on energy prices," says Judson. "Nights are so quiet without the perpetual hum of air conditioners. Also, the guys who are shirtless who probably shouldn't be shirtless, are wearing shirts!"

Hard to argue with any of that. So long as we don't have to fire up our furnaces.
