A Love Letter From PTBOCanada To You On Our 4th Anniversary

Dear PTBOCanada.com Readers,

Today (May 27th) marks the 4th anniversary of PTBOCanada.com—a local, independently owned digital media company born on May 27th, 2010. How time flies!

We want to thank all of you for your amazing support. We love this gem of a city—it truly is one of the best in Canada, if not anywhere (Exhibit A: Jason Dunn's love song to Peterborough). Peterborough is a way of life sotospeak. As that saying goes, "You can take the person out of the Peterborough, but you can't take the Peterborough out of the person." And as that famous tee says, "I'd Rather Be In Peterborough".

We view PTBOCanada.com and our social media channelsTwitter, Facebook and Instagram—as a conversation and collaboration with you, an extension of the spirit of this city. You constantly energize us with your amazing ideas, insights, humour and pictures you feed to us over social media, our tips line and our comments section.

Look: Stunning Images Of The Old Mustang Drive-In

[UPDATE: June 5, 2016 -> Jay Callaghan tells PTBOCanada he visited the old drive-in site again recently and there is nothing left—"everything has been removed". Jay is glad he was able to capture these images when he did. So are we.]

---------------------

ORIGINAL POST

The iconic Mustang Drive-In near Peterborough was abandoned after being closed in Fall 2012. Peterborough photographer Jay Callaghan captured stunning images of the now run-down, vandalized property on a overcast day with ominous skies.

You can't watch a horror movie there now but you could certainly film one there. Check out Jay's pictures below and add your comments below or join in on our Facebook post...

Look At The Meteor Photographer Jay Callaghan Captured In The Skies Over Peterborough

Peterborough photographer Jay Callaghan—who captures beautiful nature images like these light pillars pics that went viral all over the world earlier this year—has done it again. He caught this meteor pictured below in the skies over Peterborough at 3:50 a.m. "I lucked out," Jay tells us. "I set the alarm for 2:45 a.m. and it was cloudy. I went back to sleep, set the alarm for 3:45 and it was clear. Saw 3 meteors in 20 minutes."

Peterborough Chamber Is Launching Holistic Group

A new group is forming in Peterborough, and you may want to take notice. Under the umbrella of The Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, holistic practitioners and businesses will be coming together to use their powers for good. The group aims to offer peer support as well as to let the community in Peterborough become more aware of the richness an diversity that is available here in the healing arts.

Some of the practitioners and businesses have been offering services in Peterborough for 30 years or more, and there are many modalities offered that are safe and effective to use alongside medical health care—everything from naturopathy and massage to acupuncture, herbalism, nutrition, cranial sacral or reiki. If there is a healing modality, chances are that Peterborough has it, and the Holistic Group wants you to know about it. We are virtually Sedona North!

Holistic practitioners have been like a silent partner in Peterborough, diligently working in their practices. If you start to dig deeper, you will discover how much influence that these practitioners have on the physical, emotional and mental health of Peterborough citizens. The Peterborough Chamber Holistic Group hopes to showcase the dedication and professionalism available in this region and perhaps introduce the idea of holistic healing to those who have not yet considered it. Holistic businesses contribute to our local economy and could become a draw to outside communities as well. Adding a relaxing treatment to dinner and a show would make a perfect weekend getaway for someone who lives in a bustling city.

There is an African proverb that says "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." That is exactly what this partnership is about. Innovation is alive and well in Peterborough. This is a group of inspired individuals who not only work for the wellness of their clients, but are committed to coming together for the wellness of this community. Some of the sparkly ideas brewing already include:

- Professional Development Workshops
- Dedicated Webpage
- Dedicated Search Function which flags your business as
“Holistic”
- Dedicated Facebook page and Twitter handle
- Promotion of the Holistic Group to the Community and the rest of
the Chamber members

Those interested in being part of a group like this can contact the Chamber of Commerce and attend the first information night on May 28th in the Chamber board room at 7 p.m. Chamber membership is not required to attend, but you should RSVP to  reception@peterboroughchamber.ca. For more details on what the group has to offer, visit the link here.

PTBOCanada Featured Post: Your PC Candidate Scott Stewart

Scott Stewart

Scott Stewart

There is a lot of excitement in and around 356 Charlotte Street, the headquarters for Scott Stewart and his campaign team. Blue signs line the outside of the building while the inside is bustling with volunteers. The campaign buzz may be focused on the June 12th election and the weeks leading up to it, but there is a history behind Scott's choice to get into politics and his aim to represent Peterborough.

Born and raised on a hobby farm in the former Otonabee Township, Scott grew up in a close-knit family with his parents and two sisters. He graduated from Thomas A. Stewart Secondary, followed by Centennial College with a Diploma in Business Administration. Now married and the father of two post-secondary student children, Scott is currently the President of Carlson Wagonlit/G. Stewart Travel Services Ltd, the family business where he has served in various roles since 1986.

After graduating from college, he planned to head to the city and climb the corporate ladder through hard work and perseverance. He was full of ideas and youthful exuberance, and wanted to make a difference. But the big city corporate life proved less appealing and fulfilling than planned, so Scott decided to put that same exuberance and energy to working hard to make a difference in Peterborough.

Growing up in a close family, Scott says he was always surrounded by politics with both his father and grandfather being involved locally before him. Regardless of his views, he says that everyone in the house was entitled to their own opinions and points of view, and could discuss them openly. After running for a political position at school when he was 18, Scott became increasingly interested in politics. Not wanting to be a career politician, however, it has taken Scott just over 30 years to finally put his name back in the ring.

A self-described adventurer, sportsman, and conservationist, Scott has kept himself as involved in the community as humanly possible over the past few decades. He has competed in Tough Mudder competitions, hiked the Grand Canyon, safely completed the running with the bulls in Spain, and even climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, as a member of a team which was responsible for raising more than $100,000 for the PRHC Foundation’s Radiation Bunker Campaign.

Watching his children struggle to find good job prospects in Peterborough and even Ontario, Scott says something has to change. That's why he believes in the PC plan to create 1 million jobs over the next 8 years. These jobs will be created by:

·      Balancing the budget within two years

·      Reducing the billions wasted each year on interest by starting to pay down our debt

·      Reducing the government payroll by 10%, returning the focus back to front-line service and away from top-heavy bureaucracy

·      An across-the-board wage freeze for every government employee, including MPPs, and ending gold-plated pensions for new hires

·      Leading by example by shrinking the size of the cabinet from 27 to 16 ministers

·      Opening government contracts to competition to get the best deal for taxpayers

·      Modernizing Ontario's apprenticeship rules to create 200,000 new jobs

·      Reducing taxes on employers by 30%, creating 120,000 jobs

·      Bringing our energy bills under control, helping employers create 40,000 new jobs

·      Implementing a GTA Transportation Plan, creating 96,000 new jobs

·      Reducing personal income tax, creating 47,000 jobs

Dedicated to creating a better Peterborough, Scott would like the support our community in the June 12th election.
