Local Photographer Releases Zine On Back Alleys Of Peterborough

Since moving to Peterborough 13 years ago, photographer Kevin Collins has been fascinated by the back alleys in the downtown core.

"Most of these alleys are only accessed by discrete tunnels or 'holes in the wall' and open up into a whole other world," Collins says on his website introducing the "Backwater" series, which has been released in zine format (more on that below). "In spring 2017, I set out to try and capture downtown Peterborough from a different perspective."

"While many of the buildings in downtown Peterborough have gone through multiple restorations and renovations over the years, the backsides of these buildings are relatively untouched," Collins writes.

"Many of these areas are covered in graffiti, and held together with crumbling bricks, rotten wood and corrugated sheet metal, and in that, I’ve attempted to capture the dilapidated beauty of these nooks and crannies and that they still function as part of local business or provide living accommodations," says Collins.

"I wanted to capture downtown Peterborough differently than most of the other photos I've seen," Collins tells PTBOCanada. "We walk by these alleys and corridors everyday and never give them a second thought. To try and convey some of the grit, all the photos were shot on black and white film."

Portrait Of Peterborough Artist Series Launches Showcasing 40 Local Artists

Peterborough photo artist Mike Taylor has launched an awesome "Peterborough Artists and Artisans Portrait Project" showcasing the tremendous talent in the arts community in Kawarthas.

Taylor is creating a portrait of 40 select creatives (some of those are featured in this post) as they work, and is hoping to exhibit the entire collection when it's completed at a gallery show (he has four portraits remaining to shoot).

"I started this project about 10 years ago, but it was pushed to the side as life got in the way," Taylor tells PTBOCanada of the series. "This past February, I decided that I was ready to pick it up again. So I started researching the local arts community, began sending out email letters and booked my first few portraits."

"The first to shoot was Rob Niezen in his home studio, and the most recent was Lakefield artist Marilyn Goslin," Taylor tells PTBOCanada of his series which is nearing completion.

"Most of the time, an artist I approach will accept," Taylor says of the series. "I’ve been turned down only twice. A pretty good success ratio I think."

"In most cases, the day that I shoot the artist is the first time I meet them," Taylor says. "I go in cold, not knowing what sort of person or environment I will encounter. The challenges are many [he documents some of them here]—and I revel in them all."

"When I moved to Peterborough in 2002, it was very apparent to me this is a very richly artistic community, Taylor tells PTBOCanada. "Being a creative myself, I saw this series as an opportunity to build a body of work that could stretch my skills, while bringing more attention to these talented people. They deserve it. The city deserves it. I’m happy to be part of such a great group of people."

Recently Taylor started an additional page on the website where he writes about how a few of the portraits were accomplished. "Readers get insight into what is involved in the process, the challenges I deal with, along with what their artist-heros are like while at work," Taylor says.

Taylor's hope is to assemble an exhibition that holds all 40 portraits in addition to a piece of art by each artist. "The idea is that visitors who come to see their favourite artist will be exposed to potentially 39 others that they weren’t familiar with—it’s a win-win scenario," he says.

Dramatic Lightning Pictures Over Peterborough Last Night

There was quite a lighting show Thursday night (April 27th) in Peterborough, and local weather photographer Jay Callaghan captured stunning pictures that he posted to his Facebook page CaltekDesign.

"All the shots were taken from Whittington Drive overlooking the airport." Callaghan tellls PTBOCanada. "The close strike was at the airport, the other three were in the direction of Kawartha Downs."

Peterborough Photographer Samantha Moss Is A Local Star On The Rise

Peterborough-based freelance portrait/product photographer Samantha Moss is a local star on the rise with her growing list of editorial and commercial clients. "This time last year I still felt I hadn’t earned the right to call myself a photographer—I was just a person who liked taking pictures," Moss tells PTBOCanada.

But over the past year, much has changed. Her client base and profile in the community has steadily risen.

"I have had the opportunity to work with some incredible local talent and businesses," Moss tells PTBOCanada. "Getting involved and networking with groups such as FastStart, The Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster, and Arthur: Independent Press has opened so many doors for me."

Moss will be graduating in Spring from Trent University where she studied Media Studies, and has made roots here since moving here 6 years ago. She has found her calling in photography and photojournalism and plans to grow her business from right here in Peterborough.

Awesome Photo Of Grey Cup Champion Brad Sinopoli To Appear In Peterborough Sports Hall Of Fame

Peterborough-bred Brad Sinopoli was chosen Most Valuable Canadian after the Ottawa Redblacks dramatic 39-33 overtime victory in the Grey Cup game against the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday (November 27th).

An awesome photo (see below) of the Crestwood grad taken by Ottawa-based editorial and portrait photographer Ellen Bond—who hails from Peterborough—during the 2015 season will soon be housed at the Peterborough Sports Hall of Fame for the next four months.

Bond got the chance to shoot for the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) during the past couple seasons, and was on the field for every Ottawa Redblack game.

"Being from Peterborough, playing so many sports there—my dad Ernie and brother Eric also being deeply involved in athletics in Peterborough—and knowing all the photos out there of Brad Sinopoli....for them to want to display my photo is an honour," Bond tells PTBOCanada. "Maybe they did their research and knew Brad's dad, Sam, was one of my high school (Crestwood) hockey coaches....LOL. I am proud of that photo and happy more people in Peterborough will get to see it."
