Where Was Peterborough Located Millions Of Years Ago?

DinosaurDatabasePeterborough.jpg

We know Peterborough was incorporated as a city in 1905 (she’s looking pretty good at 115), and we think that if we asked most Ontarians to point to where Peterborough would be on a map, they could tentatively point somewhere between Ottawa and Toronto.

If we were to ask you where the physical location of Peterborough 400 million years ago (hint… it was under water) or even 750 million years ago, you might not know where to look.

Check out the cool site The Dinosaur Database that has a slick animated map to help you find out how the very spot that we are standing on changes over time. Our planet has sure changed through history!

Road Construction Will Slow Traffic Throughout Peterborough

Saved Image 2020-06-10 at 1.50.38 PM.png

The City of Peterborough has started sealing the cracks in the City’s roads this week. This helps lengthen the life of the road, preventing water infiltration.

Unfortunately that also means that many roads will be reduced to single lanes in either direction. Check out the City’s handy online map to see where construction is currently slowing down your commute (denoted in purple).

How To Watch Out For Ticks In The Area This Spring

Now that Spring has arrived and you actually have the time to start working in the gardens, be extra vigilant this year to check yourself and family (pets included!) for ticks.

These little insects hide in your leaf litter to survive the winter, and if you’re bitten by one, there is a chance they can pass on a wide variety of diseases, the most prevalent being Lyme disease (check out this great article from Peterborough Health to learn more).

TicksInPeterborough.jpg

CHECK OUT THIS HANDY APP

There is a handy app called eTick (developed here in Canada) to help you identify and report ticks. You can also use it to see if there have been any sightings in your area. Looking at the green dots on the map pictured above, sadly you can see ticks have already been reported in almost every part of Peterborough this year alone!

Stay safe, and make sure you wear long clothing, use insect repellent containing DEET, check yourself over when you get back inside (be sure to look closely, they are pretty tiny!) and if you find one… remove it properly.

The PTBOCanada Boredom Buster List

Need a break from binge-watching the latest Netflix series and a reprieve from social media during this vital “social distancing” phase of the COVID-19 pandemic when you’re at home? Here are some ideas…

Cooking/Baking Since you’re not as rushed during meal times, take the time to make a twist on a normal meal with the kids. Just for fun, we followed this super simple recipe to make Baked French Toast. It turned out crispier and far tastier than the regular pan fried method.

Seeds Get a jump start on the season’s gardening. Even through Seedy Sunday was cancelled, you can still purchase seeds through many local vendors (and check out the seed swap page on Facebook).

Go for a hike Head to Jackson Park (and bring the pooch, if you have one) for some fresh air while still being able to socially distance yourself from everyone. Fresh air and some sunshine will really boost your mood. The Trans Canada Trail isn’t too icy, but grab your YakTracks for the side trails.

Restaurants/cafes Don’t forget to support local. You can purchase gift certificates from them for when they re-open, and many restaurants are still offering take-out/curb-side pickup as well as delivery.

Games Dust off those board games out of the closet for family night or test your memory by turning our Fun Facts About Peterborough into a quiz show.

To-Do List Check one thing off your Spring-To-Do list like finally clean out the garage or basement. You don’t have to go all Marie Kondo on your pantry, but purging is good for the soul.

Watch a locally made movie Check out local filmmaker Adriano Ferreri’s movie E.M.P. 333 Days on Amazon Prime.

What ideas can you add to the list? Go to our Facebook page post, or email us at tips@ptbocanada.com.

The Market Hall Clock Is Now Digital, Includes Emoji To Brighten Your Day

UPDATE: Happy April Fool’s Day!!

———————-

After adding LED lights to the iconic Market Hall clock back in January of 2018, further upgrades were completed over the weekend to convert all four faces to digital.

If you look up on your drive to work in downtown Peterborough, you might not notice that the entire face of the clock is a screen… but you will be sure to do a double take when an emoji is smiling down at you.

Here’s a quote from a press release…

“We had so much positive feedback from our themed coloured lights that this year we wanted to take it one step further!”

The digital faces also replace the old clockwork machinery that frequently broke down, according to a press release…

“While the new screens were pricey to install, they are rated to work all the way to -40. That's something that we come to expect from our Canadian winters. We think they will pay for themselves vs. the costly repairs of the previous machinery.”

Since it is digital, various emoji can be shown to create a playful vibe downtown while still showing the current time.

Jacob Rodenburg From Camp Kawartha... You Rock!

Jacob Rodenburg

Each month, PTBOCanada awards someone that is making a difference locally that you nominate. This month, Jim Moloney from the Riverview Park and Zoo gave a glowing shout-out to Jacob Rodenburg, Executive Director of Camp Kawartha (Environment Centre is at 2505 Pioneer Road in Peterborough and Camp Kawartha’s main site is at 1010 Birchview Road in Douro-Dummer).

Here’s what Jim had to say about Jacob…

“Jacob is the Executive Director of Camp Kawartha and a champion of environmental stewardship in our community. In addition to his inspired leadership at Camp Kawartha, he is the visionary and driving force behind the Pathway to Stewardship & Kinship project.

This is an incredible initiative to develop a community-based strategy intended to foster environmental stewardship in our youth. The project brought together representatives from both school boards and numerous other local conservation and educational organizations to brainstorm, research, and develop a community-wide, cooperative, and coordinated program of environmental education. The project has made great progress with a fully developed educational framework having been developed, with more than 40 local classes participating in pilot sessions, and dozens of local organizations and individuals providing support for the pilot. This project is just "freeking" amazing!”

Wimpy's Diner... You Rock!

Sam & Bonnie, Owners of Wimpy’s Diner Peterborough

Each month, PTBOCanada will award someone that is making a difference locally that you nominate. This month, Chad Buchner from Small Change PTBO gave a glowing shoutout to Sam, Bonnie and Tas Shamsuz—the owners of Wimpy’s Diner (1080 Lansdowne Street West).

Here’s what Chad had to say about them…

These people have supported this community for the past two years by serving people free Thanksgiving meals for those who need a small change. Recently, we served over 350 meals and this family welcomed everyone into their restaurant just like it was their home.

Being the Vice President of Small Change Peterborough, I have come to see many amazing people in our community with big hearts but these people do not get the credit they truly deserve.
