Yann Martel began writing, on the side, while studying philosophy at Trent University. "I was terrible, at first. I wrote a bunch of really bad plays and short stories. But I loved playing with language, creating a set, inventing characters," he says in this YouTube interview below. "I kept at it and, slowly, I became a writer." In this interview, he talks about life at Trent, Peterborough, the writing process, the success of his book and the Oscar-winning movie adaptation, and more...

Once upon a time, Club Aragon (now Trentwinds) was Peterborough's ultra-modern nightspot. Bobby "Mr. Big Band" Kinsman and his orchestra was the house band there for many years, and the likes of Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and Robert Goulet played gigs there. Kinsman's house band played there for 25 years, starting in 1947, and his band also played the Peterborough Arts and Water Festival from 1970 to 1976. Kinsman, who is in The Pathway of Fame, was known for giving money to charities and helping struggling musicians. Here his son Tom talks about how his legendary Dad came to Peterborough and what Club Aragon was like...

A Peterborough man named Graeme (no last name given) has been doing everyday challenges around Peterborough—everything from going to the ReFrame Film Festival to signing up for a half marathon to getting a library card from the Peterbrough library to seeing the Stanley Cup. Neat concept, and lots of bucket list ideas he's building. He's documenting them all at his The Everyday Challenge blog on Tumblr (you can also follow along on Twitter @graeme_everyday). One of his latest posts includes this video below skating the canal in honour of Hockey Day in Canada being in Peterborough...

How much does Brandon Slavik love Peterborough? Well enough to get this amazing work of art on his arm (see pics below). As he explains to us: "I have it on my left arm. It originally started out with the Superman symbol when I was 18 and I decided to turn it into a sleeve with a different layout. I am born and raised in this town and take pride in the skyline that our town offers. All of the buildings have meaning to myself/family or are unique to our City. I have St. John's Anglican Church, Quaker Oats, Hunter St. Bridge, Times Square Clock, Market Hall, Lift Lock and the Peterborough Water Tower. My childhood friend and amazing Tattoo Artist Scott Mason spent over 8 hours on the arm in two sittings. He came up with the layout and we agreed on the shots of the buildings and which buildings we put in there. The neat thing was the more we started talking, the more buildings we wanted to include (like our childhood school King George) but my arm was not big enough to fit everything on." Wow.
