Tim Hortons Holiday Smile Cookie Campaign Raises Over $33,000 For Kawartha Food Share

The Tim Hortons Holiday Smile Cookie Campaign raised $33,645.48 for Kawartha Food Share (KFS) in a cheque presentation at the latter’s facility on Tuesday morning.

The campaign ran from Nov. 13 to 19, when KFS was announced as the fundraiser recipient in early November.

“In the past, we have donated at Christmas to Kawartha Food Share,” said Erika Rowe-Gallagher, Tim Hortons owner and operator. “It becomes a little more special and a little more meaningful at Christmas when we think of family.”

The proceeds were split 50/50 between the Tim Hortons Foundation Camps for youth aged 12-16 with disadvantaged circumstances. The other half was for KFS to help them fill their food bank.

“Hopefully this will stretch us a couple months into the new year. We're busy right now filling up our Christmas orders and getting things out before the year's end,” said Ashlee Aitken, KFS general manager. “Come January, the need is just as high so this will help us ensure that we can purchase food items for that time of year as well.”

The money came in time to help meet KFS's increasing demand over the holiday season.

In the last couple of years, we have our numbers have significantly risen,” said Aitken. “Pre-pandemic, we were feeding anywhere from 7,500 to 9,000 people a month. Now we're feeding close to 12,000 people a month at food banks. Sometimes that number increased as high as 15,000.”

Community Care Peterborough Recipient of 2023 Smile Cookie Campaign Beginning In May

Community Care Peterborough (CCP) is the beneficiary of this year’s Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign proceeds as they were selected by the café owners of Peterborough, Lakefield, Bridgenorth and Curve Lake stores this May announced on Wednesday.

Typically held in September, Tim Hortons across the County is now running the annual campaign in May.  It begins on May 1 and runs until May 7.  All proceeds from chocolate chunk Smile Cookie for $1.50 (plus applicable taxes) go towards CCP’s Give a Meal, Give a Drive initiative and its other community support programs.

“Although we have many clients who do not struggle, we have an increasing number who do,” said Alicia Vandine, donor relations and communications lead. “Many more seniors and adults with disabilities are making difficult choices about cutting food costs or missing medical appointments to reduce travel costs in order to remain in their home.’

Last year, Tim Hortons locally raised a record-breaking $92,608.26 while $15 million was sold over Canada.

“We are so honoured to be selected again this year and our staff and volunteers teams will be working alongside the Tim Hortons teams to help with production again this year, icing cookies and answering questions in restaurants about Community Care,” said Vandine. “We encourage the public to visit their local Tim Hortons during the new campaign week of May 1st to May 7th to purchase a Smile Cookie and maybe, we can even break last year’s record and sell 100,000 cookies.”

Members of the public can also pre-order a box of 12 cookies by visiting CCP’s website to download a pre-order form that you can drop off at your local Tim Hortons restaurant.

Tim Hortons Helping To Bring Youth & Community Together At Multicultural Canada Day In Peterborough

Each year, Mithila Ballal’s South Asian dancers look forward to performing at the Multicultural Canada Day Festival in Peterborough.

“The children love participating in this community-centred event,” says Ballal. “Dance provides young children with various benefits such as physical and cognitive development, social awareness and emotional maturity.”

Through Bharathanatyam, the classical Indian form of dance the group will perform at the Multicultural Festival, Ballal says children are encouraged to express ideas which leads to a deeper understanding of their cultural background: “It builds their confidence and teaches them to empathize with people from other cultures as well," she says.

Presented by the New Canadians Centre (NCC) on Canada Day at Del Crary Park, the annual festival provides youth a great opportunity to perform in front of more than 10,000 people. “The event continues to grow and attract more performers, craft and food vendors every year,” says Yvonne Lai, Director of Community Development at the NCC.

“We are thrilled Tim Hortons is joining us as the Entertainment Sponsor for this year’s festival. Supporting youth to develop their talents, build skills and confidence is at the heart of our community development programs," adds Lai. "It’s wonderful to be working with Tim Hortons to encourage and empower youth to achieve success.”

You never know what you'll see going through a Tim Hortons drive thru. On January 30th, Zamboni driver Graham Wilkins was coming from the Ontario Speed Skating Oval in Lakefield and decided to hit up the Timmies there for coffee.

Only in Canada, eh!?

Lakefield's Tim Rollwagen was there to tweet it out this picture.
