Cheers: Peterborough Petes and Bobcaygeon Brewing Company Brew Petes Lager

In a match made in beer and hockey heaven, The Peterborough Petes have released an officially licensed team-branded beer called “Petes Lager” in a unique partnership with Bobcaygeon Brewing Company.

The beer is a 4.0% light lager and the art was designed by Ryan Dawson and illustrated by freelance artist Cam Miller.

“We’re incredibly excited to be partnering with the Peterborough Petes for the new Petes Lager,” says Richard Wood, President and Co-Founder of Bobcaygeon Brewing Company. “At only 4.0%, this light lager is crisp and refreshing, and we know it will become a fast favourite in Peterborough and the Kawarthas.”

When Dawson designed the can, he had the Peterborough community in mind as an important factor for the brand.

“We worked closely with the Petes on what is important to the community and what is important to the team,” he says. “It was a bit of a celebration of the fans in with the Bobcaygeon brand.”

Richard Wood, President of Bobcaygeon Brewing Company met Burton Lee, Petes Executive director of business operations last summer at the brewery to discuss partnership ideas according to Wood.

“This isn’t the first time the Petes had been approached about a branded beer. It was the partnership that was important to us,” said Lee. “It’s really been a process. That’s what we’re really excited about, we’re excited about the future of this partnership.”

The beverage is a way to support the Petes, Bobcaygeon Brewing Company, and local restaurants. The lager was another outlet to allow the fans to help the team—especially without a season over the past year.

“During the pandemic, there have been less and less ways to support the Petes so I think this is a great way to support the Petes and have a great beverage,” said Lee. “Know that you’re helping the Petes every time you buy a beer.”

The drink will be available now at Taso’s Restaurant & Pizzeria, Bobcaygeon Brewery General store located at 649 The Parkway, Unit 4, and Peterborough beer stores will be able to sell the lager in four to six weeks.

“We know that Petes fans have an appreciation for great beer and great hockey, and we’re very excited to get Petes Lager into their hands,” says Lee. “Any time we can partner with a local business while benefiting our passionate fan base is a win for us. We believe this is a perfect opportunity for beer drinkers and hockey fans to come together to support local business during what has been a challenging year for our community.”

The Peterborough Petes have won nine Ontario Hockey League Championships as a franchise with over 180 players making it to the National Hockey League.

The Bobcaygeon Brewing Company has crafted over 50 different brands of beer.

Downtown Peterborough Saturday Farmers’ Market Adapts To New COVID Measures

The Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market (PRFM) is adapting its operations to conform with the newly introduced provincial requirements and the advice from Peterborough Public Health.

Effective Saturday, January 2nd, 2021, the Market will strengthen measures designed to help ensure the safety of customers, vendors and volunteers, while continuing to support and promote verified local farmers and food suppliers.

“We continue to adhere to the direction of the province and our local Heath Unit”, says Reem Ali, Chair of the PRFM Steering Committee. “We encourage all of our customers to respect social distancing and are introducing additional features to help achieve that objective.”

Under the new provincial requirements, supermarkets, convenience stores and indoor farmer’s markets are open for in-person shopping at 50 percent capacity.

For the Downtown Saturday Market, located at Peterborough Square, this means the maximum customer capacity inside the market at any one time is 100 people. Customers lining up inside the market at a vendor, or outside the market at the entrance, must maintain a physical distance of at least two metres.

In addition to strengthening measures to facilitate physical distancing, the Market is encouraging customers to consider how they can assist, such as:

-        Limiting the number of shoppers to one person per family;

-        Placing pre-orders with vendors for simple pick-up; and

-        Shopping for others who may be isolated.

Lakefield Farmers’ Market 2020 AGM Reports 35% Increase In Vendor Sales

At the Lakefield Farmers’ Market 2020 AGM held in the parking lot next to Isabel Morris Park on Thursday, October 8th, after the last market for the season, Market Manager Jenny Ross reported that vendors had an increase of 35 percent in total sales this year over 2019.

“The Lakefield Farmers' Market is pleased to wrap up an incredibly successful market season,” says Market Manager Jenny Ross. “We are feeling thankful to our many customers who showed up all season to support local agriculture and businesses and kept the community spirit alive in this challenging time.”

Smiles were all around (even behind the masks) at the Lakefield Farmers’ Market Annual General Meeting held on Thursday, October 8th, 2020 after the last market day. (Market Manager Jenny Ross is seated in the middle, surrounded by vendors and board members.)

"A major factor in the Market's success was the ongoing, dedicated efforts made by all of our vendors and volunteers to provide a safe and welcoming environment for our customers," adds board member Jennie MacKenzie.

The Lakefield Farmers’ Market was pleased to receive financial support from the Township of Selwyn. A $250 Municipal Grant was received in the spring. Early in the summer, the Township of Selwyn introduced its Business Re-Opening Program. Through this program, the market board received $1,234.36 to recoup the costs of personal protective equipment provided to volunteers, hand sanitizer and sanitizing station supplies offered to customers and signage to educate the public and help the Market operate smoothly under the new COVID-19 safety protocols.

The vendors look forward to the 2021 season and would like to remind customers that many of them are available for off season sales. Go to lakefieldfarmersmarket.net for more info.

Spare-A-Square #2: Porch Food Drive For Kawartha Food Share Takes Place October 24th

Following on the heels of a successful Spare-A-Square food-raiser earlier this year in March that collected 23,000 pounds of food, another vital citywide food drive to restock the dwindling shelves at Kawartha Food Share has begun.

On Saturday, October 24th by 9 a.m., anyone who is not ill or in self-isolation is being asked to leave a bag of non-perishable food items on your front porch to be picked up by volunteers. The porch food drive takes place across the city of Peterborough, and will help restock the empty shelves at Kawartha Food Share.

Starting at 9 am, volunteers will drive around the city and collect the items and deliver them to the Kawartha Food Share warehouse.

HELPFUL ITEMS THEY NEED INCLUDE:

-> Canned tuna
-> Pasta and pasta sauce
-> Alpha-getti, Kraft Dinner and Chef Boyardee, (things that are easy and that kids like)
-> Breakfast cereal
-> Peanut Butter
-> Any non-perishable fruit and vegetable items
-> Rice
-> Canned soup/stew
-> Feminine hygiene products
-> Baby formula
-> Diapers

Monetary Donations are also helpful. For every $1 donated, KFS can purchase up to $6 worth of food. Volunteers will be able to collect cheques or cash on October 24th. Or donations can be made online here.

All COVID-19 safety precautions are being taken. Organizers say there will be no face-to-face contact between those donating and those picking up. Volunteers will be in their own vehicles, and they will be wearing masks and will observe all necessary and suggested safety protocols.

If you are ill, do not leave a bag outside of your home. If you are self-isolating meaning you can’t make a food donation, you are asked to consider making a donation online here—every dollar counts in large amounts.

Paramedic Takeout Program: DBIA and Y Drive PTBO Collaborate To Feed Isolating Paramedics

Contactless food delivery from downtown restaurants is now available to Peterborough City-County Paramedics isolating from their friends and families at the Holiday Inn Waterfront, thanks to a new Paramedic Takeout Program by the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area and Y-Drive PTBO.

“The Downtown Business Improvement Area is delighted to be working with the Peterborough City-County Paramedics to feed our front-line workers,” says Terry Guiel, Executive Director of the DBIA. “We have a bounty of amazing restaurants for our paramedics to choose from while in isolation. Food is the most basic form of comfort and we are so incredibly pleased to be spreading a little joy to our isolating paramedics at this time.”

“Along with the DBIA’s Paramedic Takeout Program administrative support, we now have a beautifully designed takeout menu with a plethora of options made specifically for our paramedics,” adds Peterborough County Warden, J. Murray Jones. “Our Paramedics do so much for us. It is so great to provide this for them, and at the same time contribute to local businesses.”

The Peterborough City-County Paramedics set aside funds for meals and accommodation to support the Paramedics through isolation. “Our paramedic team is giving all they’ve got and it’s our responsibility to accommodate them in these uncertain times,” adds PCCP Chief Randy Mellow. “We are very grateful to the DBIA, the downtown restaurants, Y Drive and the Holiday Inn for helping us look after them.”

Y Drive PTBO—a local app-based delivery service—stepped up to support the takeout program, providing free delivery for any participating restaurant unable to deliver foodstuffs themselves.

“Now, more than ever, we need to support our front-line workers—offering free delivery through this program allows Y Drive PTBO to give back to those who are working hard to safeguard our community health,” say Rob Davidson and Erica Young, co-owners and operators of Y Drive PTBO.

Winter Farmers’ Market Returns To Peterborough Square

The Peterborough Regional Farmers’ Market is returning to Peterborough Square for the 2019/2020 indoor market season starting this Saturday (November 2nd) and running through April.

The winter market is located at Peterborough Square’s lower level near Princess Gardens. Signage will direct you from all mall entrances to the market location, which is in a newly renovated space this year.

“The location is perfect for a market,” says Julie Fleming from Circle Organic Community Farm. “It’s central, accessible and familiar to everyone. It’s also a warm and welcoming space for families and is fully accessible.”

Parking is free in the mall’s underground parking. Take the blue Galaxy Cinema doors upstairs from the parking garage, exit at the first level doors and you’re right there at the Farmers’ Market.

There is also a Kids’ Zone at the market which has been a huge hit for families. It has toys and other activities happening there while parents enjoy a hot beverage. You can’t go wrong with that.
