Peterborough Police Deemed Bomb Threat of Local Business a Hoax

Peterborough Police have determined that a bomb threat made at the Holiday Ford-Lincoln dealership on Sep. 29 on Lansdowne Street was a hoax announced on Tuesday.

No charges will be laid since the individual in question was under the age of 12. 

Peterborough Police remind residents that these types of calls are taken very seriously, require significant resources to ensure the public’s safety and officers and can result in criminal charges.

Peterborough Police Seeking Information of Bomb Threat at Local Business

Peterborough Police are seeking information of a bomb threat made against a Peterborough business on Wednesday afternoon.

At roughly 4:00 p.m., officers were called to a business at the corner of Lansdowne Street and Spillsbury Drive after being issued a bomb threat.

Police evacuated the business, set up a perimeter and called the OPP bomb unit for assistance. Just before 1:00 a.m., the OPP Bomb Unit and bomb detecting dogs were on the scene and did not find anything suspicious or threatening.

The area was cleared after roughly nine hours with the investigation ongoing at publication.

Wanted Campbellford Woman on Warrant Arrested On Multiple Charges

Peterborough Police arrested a 26-year-old Campbellford woman wanted on a warrant on Monday afternoon.

At roughly 5:30 p.m. on Monday, the woman was located and arrested by Peterborough Police. She was charged with a dangerous operation of a vehicle and failing to stop at an accident resulting in bodily harm in connection with two incidents over the weekend. 

Around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, officers were called to a home after reports a vehicle was driven at a group of people. The driver allegedly got out and swung a bat at several women. 

Police received a second call from 9-1-1 about a vehicle being driven erratically in the George and Lake Street area that struck a man. He was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment.

In addition to the warrant, the woman was also charged with:

  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes

  • Dangerous operation causing bodily harm

  • Assault with a weapon

  • Two counts of abandoning a child (two young children were in the vehicle at the time of the incidents)

The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Peterborough Police Still Investigating Woodglade Boulevard Fire

UPDATED: 3:11 p.m. 13/09/22

Peterborough Police responded to a fire Tuesday morning around 6:30 a.m. at a Woodglade Boulevard home.

Police, firefighters and electricians were on the scene in the morning on Tuesday, blocking off Woodglade Boulevard between Ridgewood Road and Sherbrooke Street to traffic.

As a result of a police investigation, a 71-year-old man from Peterborough faces an arson charge.

No injuries were reported and the accused is in custody and set to appear in court on Tuesday.

Police, fire and the Ontario Fire Marshall continue to investigate the scene. Expect police presence for the next few days according to a police press release.

Peterborough Police Lay 70 Traffic Related Charges In First Week Of School

The Back-to-School Traffic Safety Initiative between Peterborough County, Township of Cavan Monaghan and the Peterborough Police Service has safety at the forefront with 70 charges laid in the first week.

Between September 6-9, officers laid the following charges:

  • Speeding: 42

  • Distracted Driving: 1

  • Crosswalk Offences: 2

  • Permit Violations: 23

  • Unsafe Vehicles: 2 (Towed from Highway)

“Peterborough Police remind motorists that back to school time is an exciting time for children and we want to ensure it’s also a safe time,” said Acting Chief Tim Farquharson, Peterborough Police Services. “Please be aware of school zones, buses on our roads, and students walking and cycling to school. Together we can ensure everyone has a safe and memorable back to school experience.”

Peterborough Police will continue to monitor school and community zones over the coming weeks to ensure school children are safe during the return to school.

Resident Fined $583 After Speeding Through School Zone, Police Will Continue To Provide Increased Presence As School Returns

Over the past week, Peterborough Police has been conducting traffic safety initiatives in school zones and community zones in Cavan-Monaghan, Lakefield, and the City of Peterborough.

So far there have been tickets issued for speeding and other infractions.  

On Friday an officer on patrol on County Road 10 near North Cavan Public School stopped a driver recorded going 99 km/h in a 60 km/h school zone.  The ticket comes with a fine of $583.

These initiatives will continue into next week. 

Police remind motorists to take extra precautions as school buses return to the roads and students make their way to school including slowing down in school zones, giving themselves extra time to get to where they are going and stopping for school buses.

Peterborough Police Remind Motorists To Drive With Care As Students And Staff Return To Schools This Week

Peterborough Police are reminding motorists to be aware of school zones and community safety zones as students head back to school this week.

The Traffic Unit will be focusing on school zones and buses this week.

In conjunction with Peterborough County, the Township of Cavan-Monaghan and the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board have partnered to ensure enforcement of school zones.

Drivers are reminded to take extra precautions as school buses return to the roads. This includes slowing down in school zones, planning to leave early, giving at least one metre’s clearance to cyclists, and stopping for school buses.

Peterborough Police Services would like to remind motorists of the following:

  1. You must stop for stopped school buses with lights flashing.

  2. Speeding in a school zone can result in fines and demerit points.

  3. Crossing guards have the right to stop traffic at crosswalks – abide by their direction.

  4. Distracted driving can cost you up to $3000 in fines, 6 demerit points and a 30-day license suspension.

To keep school children safe, Peterborough Police will be monitoring and issuing tickets as required for offences in school zones and/or community safety zones.

Peterborough Police Investigating After Car Load Of Items Stolen From New Trent Student

Peterborough Police investigating after a carload of items was stolen during a move to Trent University.

On Wednesday officers received an online report that a carload of items worth about $7000 was stolen while the car was parked overnight at a local hotel on George Street North.  The victims, a mother and son from New York State, had just driven here to drop the son off at school.

'Good-Deed' Peterborough Police Officer Identified As Constable Brandon Bigelow

Peterborough Police Service shared a photo to social media of an officer cutting a residents lawn, that officer has since been identified in Facebook comments as Constable Brandon Bigelow.

The post shared noted that Const. Bigelow was conducting a wellness check on a 76-year-old resident, when he learned that they had just had a medical procedure done.

The resident was distraught because they were unable to cut their lawn, and the grass was getting long.

Const. Bigelow spent a few minutes cutting the residents lawn.

The post received over 100 comments thanking Const. Bigelow and commending him for his good deed.

Const. Bigelow became a Special Constable with the Peterborough Police in 2018 and was sworn in as a Constable in 2019.

Peterborough Police Recover Stolen Vehicle

Peterborough Police have recovered a vehicle that was reported stolen on Tuesday, announced on Friday.

On Tuesday Peterborough Police took a report from a Cavan Monaghan resident regarding the theft of a 2004 Ford motor home from a garage on the property.

At 4 p.m., police responded to the Chemong Road Walmart parking lot regarding the stolen 2004 Ford motor home. The vehicle was located with a male in the driver’s seat and a female in the passenger seat.

With the assistance of K-9 Gryphon both occupants were arrested for possession of stolen property. When being lodged into the police cells the female accused spat on officers. She is facing an additional charge of assault police.

  • A 42-year-old Peterborough man has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 X2 and break and enter to a residence

  • A 49-year-old Peterborough woman has been charged with assaulting a Peace Officer and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000

Both persons were held in custody for a bail hearing on Friday.
