The sign for a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen franchise just recently went up at the new building beside Chapters on Lansdowne St. They're still busy working away but no doubt it'll be open for business soon. In the meantime, you can check out their menu.

Peterborough Father & Son Paddle Trent Severn In Support Of Prostate Cancer Research

Andy & Nick Fauset

Andy & Nick Fauset

Andy Fauset and his son Nick are back at it again this year with their 2nd Annual Paddle For A Cause, kayaking the Trent-Severn Waterway from Trenton to Peterborough to raise awareness and fundraise in support of Prostate Cancer Canada—Prostate Cancer Awareness Week is September 16th to 23rd.

Last September , Andy and Nick paddled the other half of the Trent-Severn from Port Severn to Peterborough’s Silver Bean Café. That 14-day kayak journey successfully raised $7,100 for Prostate Cancer Canada’s research and education programs.

The pair have both known individuals affected by prostate cancer, and wanted to do their part toward supporting research and spreading awareness. “For my father and I, the fundraiser represents an opportunity to spend time together doing something we love, while raising awareness of a prominent, yet preventable health concern affecting men,” says Nick. “Some sons don’t have the opportunity to do this with their fathers because of diseases like prostate cancer."

Andy and Nick encourage any paddlers to join them for any length of time on their Paddle for a Cause 2013 journey. There will also be a fundraiser finale hosted at the Silver Bean Café on September 29th, at noon, open to the Peterborough community.

For a complete schedule of Andy and Nick’s route or to make a donation to Paddle for a Cause, visit their website Paddleforacause.ca. (This fundraiser is registered with Prostate Cancer Canada.) To email Andy and Nick, click here.

DBIA Featured Post: Ariyana

In a downtown such as Peterborough's, which is known for having one of the best varieties of locally owned restaurants around, one might think a newcomer to the industry would shy away from starting from scratch right in the middle of it all. But if risks weren't taken in the restaurant world, we wouldn't have the chance to experience a wonderful restaurant like Ariyana, opened by Mina Monsef and located at 396 George St N.

Ariyana brings with it one of the few cuisines that was truly missing from our amazing downtown, that being Middle Eastern! Upon opening on April 30th of this year, the restaurant serves a wide array of meat, vegetarian, vegan, and even gluten free dishes which actually comprise 90% of the menu.

A few specialties they serve are Vaziri Ghaimeh (a chicken skewar and beef kebab with all the fixings), and Ghormeh Sazbi—which are absolute Middle Eastern delights for those who have never had a chance to experience them. Local menu favourites have turned out to be the Shawarma plate and sandwich which is served in a pita, and the eggplant and falafel dishes which are a vegetarian's dream!

Mina and her staff have absolutely loved and appreciated the reception they have been given from the very day they opened. They love all of the businesses that surround them and wouldn't want to be located anywhere but in the heart of the city (they're close to the corner of Hunter and George St.). They say the support has almost been overwhelming.

Growing up in Peterborough, Mina has known the joy of the community she calls home, and has done her part to get as involved as possible. Ariyana took part in Ribfest this year, and were the first entry ever to serve halal meat at the event. They also been approached by the ReFrame Film Festival to take part by serving many of their delicious dishes to spice up the variety!

Being locally connected to the New Canadians Centre, Red Pashmina Campaign (which is partly run by her sister Maryam) and our local Mosque has given Mina plenty of support in her decision to open Ariyana and the downtown core is thankful she made that choice.

If you haven't had the chance to check it out, we suggest you give Ariyana a try. It will truly open your eyes to another example of cuisine that is truly unique in our dowtown.

Someone Tried The Chat And Cut On Scott Arnold At The LCBO And Then Called Him On

I was at the LCBO today (August 30th) and the lineup was massive for the long weekend. Only two tills open, and the lines went down a couple of aisles. I had been standing behind the same girl the entire time; there was nobody between her and I, ever. She was next in line to pay for her stuff when a dude holding a 6 pack of beer and a mickey of gin approached me and said excuse me. I moved, thinking he just wanted to get by. All of a sudden, he set his stuff on the counter and started talking to the girl, who clearly didn't know him (dubbed a Chat and Cut by Larry David in Season 8 episode 5 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, see clip below). I looked around at the other people in line; a couple of them shrugged their shoulders as if to say, I don't know what he's doing. So I walked in front of him and said, "I'm actually going to go ahead of you here, I only moved out of the way because I thought you needed to get through, I didn't expect you to jump the line." He said. "I was here the whole time, I just went to grab something." I said, "No, actually you weren't—you were pulling a chat and cut." He said, "Go ahead of me then, don't worry about it." I said, "Oh, I'm not worried." So then he says, "You should be!" People in the store were watching at this point so I just said, "Alright man, looks like I'm next, enjoy your day." He stepped in front of me (reeking of booze already) and said, "I'd finish you off right now but I don't want to break any booze in here." (Ya, heaven forbid we waste your dinner.) I ignored him and paid for my purchase and while I paid, he whispered in my ear, "I'll see you outside." He wasn't there.

What is COIN Postcard 2.0-01.jpg

In the past 20 years, COIN has achieved a lot worth celebrating, including creating hundreds of new job opportunities for unemployed community members, partnering to generate new economic activity and investment, and the development of dozens of enterprises.

It currently operates four social enterprises: Peterborough Eats, reBOOT Peterborough, TekDesk and an exciting new co-working space in its pilot phase.  Social enterprise may be nothing new but COIN’s years of experience demonstrate the imperative for constant reinvention to stay relevant and have impact.

Trent University Partners with Community Agencies On Sexual Assault Prevention Campaign

Screen shot 2013-08-29 at 12.00.10 PM.png

Trent University is joining forces with several community agencies and downtown bars to launch a new educational campaign to prevent sexual assault in the Trent and Peterborough communities.

“The focus of this new campaign goes beyond the more traditional warnings to individuals – particularly women – about safety, usually by restricting their behaviour,” said Erica Colley, clinical team leader with Trent University Student Health Services. “We want to encourage all members of the community to help prevent sexual assault from happening. The shift is from primarily focusing on individual safety measures – which can lead to feeling blamed if sexual assault occurs – to giving people the tools understand sexual assault and to intervene when necessary.”

Running through the end of September, the new campaign consists of presentations to first-year students and training for student staff during Introductory Seminar Week, Trent’s orientation week for new students, which runs from September 2nd to 6th. The campaign also features printed materials such as posters, pamphlets and swag, and social marketing pieces, which will be widely distributed both on campus and in downtown bars.

The goal of this campaign is to educate the public and reduce the incidences of sexual violence. “We hope to raise awareness, challenge myths, fight victim-blaming, empower bystanders, and stand in solidarity with survivors,” Colley adds.

Partners in the campaign include: Trent University, Women’s Health Care Center of PRHC, Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Program, Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre, Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Services and at least 17 different downtown bars and clubs frequented by Trent students.
