Peterborough Chapter Of Canada World Youth Looking For Host Families

Screen shot 2013-07-15 at 12.44.09 PM.png

Canada World Youth is currently looking for people interested in hosting a Canadian and a Ukrainian youth who are participating in their Youth Leaders in Action Women’s Exchange.

Peterborough has been selected to host a group of 18 youth, aged 17 to 21, for three months from December 2013 to February 2014. Half the group will be made up of young women who come from all regions of Canada, and the other half are young women from Ukraine. During their stay in Peterborough, the youth will take part in various projects in the community, volunteering with nine local organizations.

You can get involved by becoming a host! All types of households—retirees, singles, single parents, same sex, and nuclear families—are invited to share their daily activities with CWY Volunteers. You won’t have to alter your lifestyle in any way: one goal of the program is to integrate volunteers into everyday family life.

One spare room and a willingness to share your home is all that is required. Why host? Experience your community through new eyes, introduce your children to a different world perspective, make new friends, exchange ideas and gain new insights, while making a huge difference in the lives and education of 2 young people.

Hosts receive a monthly allowance of $720. For more info, these is a session at Sadlier House on Thursday, July 25, 2013 from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. where you can meet past host families, alumni and learn how you can be involved.

For more info, contact Tricia Sharpe, Project Supervisor, by email or phone 705-917-0548.

East City Boy Jonathan Bulman Raising Money For Clean Water Charity

JonoLemonade.jpg

Jonathan Bulman is 6 years old and lives in Peterborough's East City. His goal this summer is to help make a difference for those around the world that don't have access to clean water. His journey began after conversations with his parents about helping to save water where he can (like when he's brushing his teeth) because not everyone can simply turn on the tap and have clean, ever flowing water. This was a real eye opener for Jonathan and he wanted to do his part to help, so he connected with Charity Water, a non-profit organization that aids in bringing clean, safe drinking water to developing countries. You'll find him fundraising at 286 Mark Street, serving up lemonade along with apples or freezies. His hours come and go based on weather and such, but he'll be running his fundraising drive until mid-September. Head over to Mark Street and donate to his cause. Be sure to ask him about his story and he'll be more than happy to share it. For more information, you can follow him on Twitter or donate online at Jono's Journey

Freedom 55 Financial Charity Golf Classic Unites Community in Support of Mental Health

Screen shot 2013-07-05 at 9.34.34 AM.png

Rallying their teams to help raise awareness in support of mental health, the Freedom 55 Financial Peterborough Charity Golf Classic takes place at Peterborough Golf & Country Club on July 18th.

Now in its seventh year, the tournament will raise money to help support mental health education and programming provided by the Peterborough Networked Family Health Team. Support initiatives of the mental health program include free counselling/therapy in anxiety, depression, and other life stresses, information and/or referral to community resources and evidence-based trauma treatments and group therapy.

Mike Judson, local weather analyst at CHEX Television, recognizes the importance of ensuring people getting help when it’s needed most. “Many people still don’t understand that mental health issues can be the driving force leading people to a life of homelessness,” says Judson. "It’s events like this golf tournament that help raise awareness, allowing for enlightened conversations to be had in our community. I am honoured to have been asked to be a part of the tournament.”

Tournament Registration and Information is available at Gphsf.ca or by calling Hilary Law at Freedom 55 Financial 705-745-1324 ext. 204 or email Hilary.law@f55f.com.
