Fleming Students Hosting Battle of the Bands To Raise Funds For 30 Hour Famine Event

A group of students at Fleming College are participating in a 30 Hour Famine event on April 8th and 9th. They will be camped out at the Steele Centre (Sutherland Campus, 599 Brealey Dr., Peterborough) for the night, fasting for 30 hours to raise funds and awareness for programs that combat poverty and help children and communities in need around the world.

In an effort to further fundraise for the event, the students will be hosting a Battle of the Bands on Friday, April 8th (in the Steele Centre at the Sutherland Campus). Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

So far, nine bands have already confirmed to battle it out. This is an all ages, dry event that is open to the community. The cost is $5 to get in with all proceeds going to the 30 Hour Famine. The organizers will also be offering a bus (for a small fee) at the end of the night to take people downtown as city transit service ends at 10:40 p.m.

For more info, email Jessica Spooner from Fleming College's Student Administrative Council, or call 705-743-4460 x 223.

The Trash & The Wolf 101.5 Building Awareness for Relief Efforts in Japan

This Wednesday, The Trash will be donating 100 percent of cover charge proceeds to the relief effort in Japan, which their Prime Minister Nato Kan calls "the toughest and the most difficult crisis for Japan" in the 65 years since the end of World War II.

Also, local radio station The Wolf has set up a special page on their website where you can learn about various ways to help Japan via the Red Cross, and get more information about the situation there. (Their sister station Kruz FM has done the same.)

If you know of other events/resources happening in Peterborough to raise money for Japan, please add to our comments section below or email us at tips@ptbocanada.com.

David Goyette Launches New Book "Heading to Happy" At Splice

David proudly displays his new book. Photo by Evan HoltDavid Goyette, Executive Assistant to Mayor Daryl Bennett, was at Splice last night to launch his new book, Heading to Happy. This is David's second book, and it took him just over three years to write it. Heading to Happy is David's personal collection of 40 learned lessons in the art of living.

Exerpts were read by Betsy McGregor and Tim Rowat, while Jason Chessar gave a personal comentary on how the book influenced him.

David's book consists of 40 notes, but the most important one to him is based on the last line of The Beatles song "The End" on Abbey Road—"The love you take, Is equal to the love you make." That is the most important message David would like to convey.

All proceeds of the evening were donated to Our Space, and graciously accepted by Our Space Executive Director, Ken Whatman.
