Dude, Where's My Car? 7 Things You Need To Know About Winter Parking Restrictions

Dude?

Dude?

Winter parking restrictions are now in effect in Peterborough. Here is what you need to know:

1. These restrictions are in place to assist snow-clearing operations.

2. From December 1st to April 1st each year, parking is prohibited on all City streets from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. This allows better snow clearing of City streets at a lower cost because equipment will not have to return to clear areas where vehicles were parked. The fine for a violation is $15.

3. During a snowstorm, when snow-clearing is underway, no stopping is permitted on any city street. Snow-clearing operations typically take place between midnight and 8:00 a.m. The fine is $80 for this violation and the vehicle will be towed.

4. If your car is towed, all vehicles north of Parkhill Road will be towed to Milroy Park located at 242 Milroy Drive, with all other vehicles being towed to Morrow Park located at 171 Lansdowne St. W. After 24 hours, all unclaimed vehicles will be towed to an impound yard at the owners expense.

5. Free overnight parking is permitted at all municipal parking lots, King Street Parkade and Simcoe Parking Garage. Vehicles parked overnight at either parking garage can obtain a gate-arm ticket upon entry to the garage to be used for a free transit trip home.

6. Parking is normally permitted throughout the day and evening during snowy weather. Only in an extreme weather event would a public service announcement be initiated to remove vehicles from city streets during the day or evening.

7. Residents are reminded that there is no parking any time of the year on city streets for longer than 3 hours, except where a sign indicates otherwise.

For more information, call the Parking Division at 705-742-7777 ext. 2802.

Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism, part of Peterborough Economic Development, and Shimano Canada have partnered to create a new, marketable cycle tourism product. The multi-phase project will focus on a series of varied length cycling routes joining the County of Peterborough and the City of Peterborough through a regional cycling signage program and digital route mapping. These permanently sign-posted routes will take riders off of the beaten path, and introduce them to the best roads our region has to offer. The routes utilize scenic country roads throughout the County and tie into a number of trail systems in the City of Peterborough to highlight popular routes which are enjoyed by many of the area’s passionate local cyclists, but are yet to be discovered by visitors to the area—as cycle tourism contines to grow in popularity.

Shifting Gears Has Kicked Off

The 11th Annual Shifting Gears Workplace Transportation Challenge has kicked off. Shifting Gears is a month-long competition created to inspire Peterborough area employers, employees, and individuals to use active modes of commuting, such as walking and biking, as well as public transit and ride sharing.

“Shifting Gears is a long-standing community campaign that has a significant impact on employee travel behaviour during the month of May,” said Susan Sauvé, Transportation Demand Management Planner at the City of Peterborough. “There are many reasons to participate in Shifting Gears, both as an employer and an employee, with the benefits ranging from better personal health and air quality to lowered family transportation costs and reduced demand on parking spaces.”

Every employee can participate in Shifting Gears by signing up as an individual or through their workplace at Peterboroughmoves.com. Employees who participate in the program and log more than four car-free trips before May 14th will qualify for a rewards card that can be redeemed for great cycling and walking gear or a 10-trip transit pass. All participants also qualify for grand prizes, including the Grand Prize of a $750 gift certificate for Resorts of Ontario, and a free Student Car Share membership, with $10 of free drive time.

Shifting Gears is a program of GreenUP, the City of Peterborough, Wild Rock Outfitters, B!KE: the Peterborough Community Bike Shop, and Student Car Share.
