Peterborough & Kawarthas Tourism Partners With Greenbelt On New Cycling Route

The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation has partnered with Ontario By Bike, Feast ON, and regional tourism offices across Ontario’s protected Greenbelt—including Peterborough & the Kawarthas—to showcase world-class cycle tourism experiences connected to the Greenbelt Route.

Cyclists will now be encouraged to ride the new Oak Ridges to Lake Loop, which utilizes a portion of Route 3A (Hills, Views & Pastries) of the Peterborough & the Kawarthas Classics Road Cycling Routes. The new loop explores communities in the Township of Cavan-Monaghan, the City of Peterborough and the Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan.

Country Road 2 which is part of the route

The Greenbelt Route, launched in 2015, connects communities from Northumberland to Niagara on a signed cycling route through the countryside—highlighting bike-friendly destinations and supporting local economies.

New this year, as a substantial cycle-tourism asset for the region, the updated Greenbelt Route has multiple connecting routes to the Waterfront Trail and thousands of points of interest riders can add to their route to customize their experience to their taste. Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism has partnered with this group on the creation of this loop as one of the nine new cycling loops. The complete itinerary curated to include a number of local partners is available on the newly updated greenbelt.ca/route.

“The landscapes of Peterborough and the Kawarthas are the perfect backdrop for this three-day cycling trip,” says Burkhard Mausberg, CEO of Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation. “With the Greenbelt Route, we look for partners taking leadership in cycle tourism and Peterborough Economic Development has shown a strong commitment to promoting not only the region, but also healthy, active recreation.”

ORIGINAL POST

We were among a select group of 12 people invited to a beta test of a unique experential tourism experiment on Thursday (June 16th): Under Water Dining @ Lock 21.

We started in a Voyageur canoe—dressed in Voyageur gear, of course!—and made our way up to the top of the Lift Lock with great tour guides from the Canoe Museum.

We then learned from the amazing Trent Severn team about the functionality and technology behind the Lift Lock, an engineering marvel that is the highest hydraulic lock in the world with a rise of 65 feet (19.8 metres).

Then we had a quick yummy food & drink break in front of the Locks...

After that, we had an amazing tour inside the bowels of the historic Lift Lock, which opened in 1904.

Manager of Canal Operations Chad Buchner

Then the highlight of many highlights: eating delectable food literally right under the Lock prepared by world class local chefs. The 6-course meal included Fennel & Buttermilk Flan, Trout, McLean's Asparagus and much more...

Like, seriously, we ate right under here...

We then retired to another room right next to the tunnel where cars go through—we could hear the honking right next to us through the wall—to have dessert and hear ghost stories from Ed The Lockmaster...

Thanks to Peterborough & The Kawarthas Tourism, the Trent Severn Waterway crew and the Canadian Canoe Museum for putting on this awesome dress rehearsal event that we hope to see marketed to the public sometime soon. It will be a hit locally and to tourists across Canada and beyond.

Kawarthas From The Sky Is Beautiful

Patrick J. Stephen, the awesome photographer/videographer who created this video about Peterborough, has produced a short trailer video called "Kawarthas From the Sky" that is beautiful.

Patrick tells PTBOCanada how the video came together showing the amazing Kawartha landscape views, farmland, rolling hills and sunsets:

"A little while ago, I approached the Millbrook Businesses Improvement to work on a promotional film. It is really going to be fun showcasing my hometown. I've been photographing these same landscapes for years and wanted to get a different perspective and add motion to really give the landscapes energy. I've been planning this shot in my mind for months to open with a car driving down into the valley as the sun rises. I got in touch with the talented drone pilot Steve Mayhew from Yo Steve Productions to help out. The conditions were perfect. Originally it was just going to be that one shot, but as we got flying around with the drone, we came away with some pretty cool views. We don't often see landscapes from this height and time of day. After seeing what we were getting, I just had to create something with it."

We hope to see extended version of the video at some point down the road.

Watch the trailer video below...

Had some time to do a quick edit of the footage shot early morning this week. More of this to come. check out the amazing Kawartha landscape views, farmland and rolling hills. Check out more work at www.stephendigital.com/Films Huge thanks to Yo Steve Productions

Peterborough's Rosalea Terry Just Rocked Disney World For The First Time Ever

At the beginning of May, I embarked on a magical adventure to Disney World in Orlando, Florida for the first time ever—as an adult!

From Main Street USA at Magic Kingdom to the beers of the world at Epcot Pavilion, Disney was everything that I had imagined and more. All the while remembering the No. 1 travel rule of Peterborough as my boyfriend and I did: never leave home without your Peterborough Northern Originals tees.

After admiring the architectural detail of Main Street USA and being greeted by an extravagant parade hosted by everyone's favorite Disney characters— including my personal fave, Ariel—I felt like I became part of their world.

Every other float I have ever seen in my lifetime pales in comparison to the rides here. The first ride that we hopped on was the infamous Splash Mountain.

That's us in the back row in the below pic—you can't really miss us. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Epcot World Showcase was a sightseeing adventure condensed into an amazing theme park that started in Canada and ended in Mexico.

Disney Springs at night

Seeing Canada through the eyes of Disney at Epcot Pavilion was hilarious—maple syrup, hockey sticks and beer.

Martin Short narrated a short film O'Canada in Circle Vision highlighting the natural beauty of our country. Sadly, no mention of Peterborough.

We also totally rocked the water parks there...

Right before the typhoon got us at Typhoon Lagoon

I didn't realize I was headlining on May 5th at Disney World until I entered the Aerosmith studio at Rock'N'Roller Coaster and saw the poster. The Disney smart band had personalized my vacation down to the last detail.

As a roller coaster fanatic and adrenaline junkie, the Rock'N'Roller Coaster Aerosmith ride was by far my favorite.

Boasting an impressive acceleration speed of 0 to 92 km per hour in 2.8 seconds while blasting Aerosmith tunes, it provided a true VIP rock and roll Disney experience.

Disney is a place where you never outgrow the vacation. As an adult visiting Disney, I could truly appreciate how technologically advanced and innovative every aspect of the theme park was offered.

It's light-years (wink, wink) ahead of what I thought it would be...

I began the trip as an adult and when I left, I felt childlike with excitement—all thanks to the magic of Disney!

These Miniature Aerial Images Of Peterborough Are Amazing

Twenty-two-year-old Peterborough photographer/videographer Justin Schofield—currently enrolled in the Integrated Media program at OCAD in Toronto—has created an amazing series of images of a "miniature Peterborough".

Justin first took the photos several years when given multiple chances to fly around Peterborough, and has now digitally manipulated them in this clever way—almost giving them a Lego feel.

"I was playing around with Tilt-shift effect by applying a gradient blur over aerial shots of Peterborough," he tells PTBOCanada. "There is something so intriguing about aerial perspectives, especially when they look miniature."

Justin, a talented photographer, was part of the last graduating class at PCVS before it shut down. He plans to get involved in the film industry once he's completed his studies at OCAD.

Here are more of his miniature photos below...
