PTBOCanada Featured Post: Dr. Brenda Tapp On The Vital Importance Of Naturopathic Health Care

Dr. Brenda Tapp

Dr. Brenda Tapp

The past 20 years have seen an overwhelming increase in consumer demand for safe and effective natural health care. Doctors trained in the science of natural health care at accredited medical schools are known as naturopathic doctors.

Why would you see a naturopathic doctor? Well, according to Dr. Brenda Tapp of the Peterborough Centre of Naturopathic Medicine (PCNM), the core of naturopathic intervention is to treat the root cause of illness instead of relying on bandaid solutions. More than 75% of all disease is a result of poor diet and lifestyle which conventional medicine fails to address. Improving one's diet can significantly improve one's health. Doctor comes from the latin word docere which means "to teach". Dr. Tapp takes this to heart and spends time with each of her patients, teaching them about their health.

NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES

The majority of family physicians just do not have the time to spend with their patients discussing nutrition and lifestyle changes pertinent to their health. This is where naturopathic doctors come in. Their training allows them to use food as medicine with their patients. Don't have a family physician? Naturopathic doctors are able to fill the gap in the physician shortage. They have 8 years of post secondary education at university and naturopathic medical school. They use industry standards for patient history taking and physical exams, as well as ordering blood work and referring for appropriate diagnostic imaging when indicated.

HOW TREATMENT WORKS

With regard to treatment, naturopathic doctors rely on natural therapies that are validated by scientific research. In fact, most pharmaceuticals on the market today come from plants. Naturopathic doctors prescribe these plants, which in most cases are just as effective with fewer side effects as a result of being consumed in their natural state. By adding naturopathic medicine to their health care options, patients are experiencing increased satisfaction and improved recovery time.

Dr. Tapp

Dr. Tapp

DR. BRENDA TAPP'S APPROACH

Dr. Tapp is incredibly passionate about this form of medicine and has dedicated much of her time to educating the community about it. Born and raised in Peterborough, she graduated from Trent University and then went on to Toronto to attend naturopathic medical school. After completing her schooling and internship, she wrote her board licensing exams and moved back to Peterborough to open PCNM—the city's only clinic that specializes in integrative cancer care as well as family medicine.

Dr. Tapp is a member of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians. She has brought back many therapies only available in integrative clinics in Toronto to improve the health of the Peterborough community. Dr. Tapp strives to promote local by integrating local organic farms, butchers, herbalists and the farmers' market into her treatment protocols. She wants health care to be sustainable, to support the local economy and to not harm the environment.

This is the first in a series with Dr. Brenda Tapp of of the Peterborough Centre of Naturopathic Medicine.

If you have any questions about your health or about naturopathic medicine, Dr. Tapp would be happy to answer them. For more info on Dr. Tapp, go to:

Just a terrific scene. I don't know what else to say. Great acting by Robin Williams. You call actually feel what he is saying. A little background: Matt Damon sees a painting in Robin Williams office, who plays his psychiatrist, and assumes he knows everything about him by just looking at it.

Pinch of basil. One of the best scenes from this movie. Leave some comments and check out my other videos. I don't own the rights to this footage, I'm just a big fan.

PTBOCanada Featured Post: Sales Representative Patrick McAuley On Investing In A Rental Properly

The term “investment property” has always been enticing. The thought of someone else paying down a mortgage for you and then selling for a nifty profit is almost too good to pass up.

As a Real Estate Agent with Bowes and Cocks, Patrick McAuley knows all too well that for every peak there is a valley, and suggests that potential buyers consider everything before making a final decision.

Let’s change things up and look at the disadvantages of a rental property first!

Disadvantages Of A Rental Property:

1. It might be tough to finance the purchase. If the rental property is your 2nd property, then you will need to pony up a down payment of AT LEAST 20% of the purchase price. Most people will need to take a mortgage out on a property, and the initial expenses could be quite high and unexpected.

2. As the owner, you take on the responsibilities and challenges of being a landlord. Unless you can afford to pay a property management company to take on this job for you, you could encounter a few headaches. Rental units will always need repairs to be made, along with clean ups between tenants. Dealing with tenants can also be tricky—especially when it comes to receiving rent payments.

3. It could be difficult and costly to sell the property later. It can take time to sell a property, no matter how nice it is, and the unseen costs of keeping up a 2nd property with tenants potentially leaving while the house is listed can add up quickly!

Advantages Of A Rental Property (Don’t worry, There Are Quite A Few!):

1. You gain an additional monthly income. Assuming the home is rented to its potential, the money coming in for rent is generally more than the cost to run the house. Other forms of investment can be less predictable in pay outs.

2. You pay less overall tax. You can deduct certain expenses from your income—reducing the taxes you owe. The list includes:

•Mortgage interest
•Property taxes
•Insurance
•Maintenance/upgrades
•Property management
•Utility bills (if they are included in the rental agreement)

Give Patrick McAuley a call, he can help

Give Patrick McAuley a call, he can help

3. You may be able to deduct losses for tax purposes. If expenses exceed your rental income, you may be able to deduct that loss from any other sources of income you have. This could reduce your total tax bill.

So... Do Your Homework

With all of this info to consider, Patrick suggests doing your homework before making any hasty decisions. Accountants, lawyers, mortgage brokers, or other financial experts can help shed some light on a subject most people aren’t entirely educated in!

If you are considering entering the rental property market, Patrick invites you to contact him and ask as many questions as you need. He understands the importance that this decision can play in people’s lives and would be happy to steer you in the right direction!

Travis Little was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident last Friday (August 1st) after being struck by another vehicle on Lakefield Road.

Little was traveling home to Peterborough from work in Lakefield— planning a weekend of camping with his family—when the accident occured. Little was struck by another vehicle and pinned under a car, then airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He underwent a nine hour surgery to reconstruct his left leg, hip and pelvis.

He now has a long road to recovery, and his Aunt Nancy has set up an online fundraising campaign for Travis and his family while they assist him with his recover. Her goal is to raise $10,000 for them, and so far about $1,150 has been raised. You can add to that amount here.

What It's Like For PTBOCanada.com's Aaron Elliott To Resemble Adam Sandler

Aaron

Aaron

From as far back as my early teens in the mid-90s, people from friends and family to strangers on the street have told me I have a resemblance to Adam Sandler. This timeline works because it was around this time when Sandler was a big star on SNL and was branching off onto the big screen. From looks to personality, apparently we have a lot of similarities. Recently, my daughter—who isn’t quite 4 yet—was watching Sesame Street. The day’s guest was Adam Sandler, who has always been one of my favourites. When she saw him on the screen, she immediately told my wife that he looked like me. This further cemented the opinion, and I’m good with that!

Adam

Adam

Here are 9 distinct similarities I have with Mr. Sandler...

1. People assume that I’m hilarious. I’m slightly humorous. More situational comedy and quick wit than straight up joke telling! A Sandler strength.

Aaron

Aaron

2. He always gets the attractive girl! From Kate Beckinsale and Salma Hayek to Jennifer Anniston and my personal favourite Drew Barrymore, he is always with someone who is a league above—like I am with my wife.

3. We both love our grandmas!

4. Neither of us is particularly good at hockey. Golf on the other hand? Pure Champions!

5. We are both inexplicably loud at times.

Peterborough Illustrator Gets Crafty For Kraft Dinner Facebook Campaign

Local illustrator Jason Wilkins has scored a sweet gig for a Kraft Dinner social media campaign. As he tells us, "I got an email from Scott, a producer at Anomaly, the creative ad agency for Kraft Foods. His creative team thought my illustrative approach to caricature would be perfect for Kraft Dinner's upcoming Facebook campaign. Throughout the month of August, fans will post pictures of themselves enjoying Kraft Dinner in creative ways. I'll then draw caricature versions of the winning entries which will be posted to Kraft's Facebook page. Being a longtime fan of KD, it's just awesome to be teaming up with them to create something their nearly half a million Facebook followers will enjoy!"

A Peterborough Woman, Her Late Dad And The Beautiful Connection Blue Rodeo Has To Them

Mark holding his baby Ashley at 6 months

Mark holding his baby Ashley at 6 months

Congrats to Peterborough's Ashley Doherty, winner of our VIP Blue Rodeo contest, who will be attending their special concert August 8th at the Memorial Centre as part of Trent University's 50th anniversary celebrations.

When we informed her she won, she told us this in an email: "Wow, thank you so much! My Dad brought me up listening to Blue Rodeo.... I can still hear him singing along. He is no longer with us, so this is extra special for me :)"

Mark always having fun

Mark always having fun

We asked Ashley to elaborate in a subsequent email. And she did. Keep some Kleenex handy. OK, here we go...

"My Dad, Mark, meant a lot to me. I was definitely his girl! Always laughing, singing and joking around. He was SUCH a happy person despite the fatal disease—scleroderma—that attacked his lungs. He lived with it for the last 15 years of his life. You would have never known he was ill if it wasn't for the oxygen tank he had to rely on for the last few years of his life. Besides not looking 'sick', he always had a smile ear to ear. He loved his family and friends so much.

Mark & Ashley

Mark & Ashley

He also loved music! He always sang with a smile. He wasn't a musician.... But whenever he played a record, CD, or heard a good song on the radio, you could count on him belting out the lyrics! I can remember him singing Blue Rodeo songs way back. The first song I remembered him singing along to was "Try". And the album Five days In July was definitely a favourite. I can still hear him singing along to "5 Days In May" like it was yesterday. I think I can speak for my entire family when I say that when a Blue Rodeo song comes on... My Dad enters my mind. His smile. His laugh. His voice. His true love of life.

Ashley, our Blue Rodeo VIP winner

Ashley, our Blue Rodeo VIP winner

Unfortunately, we lost him Christmas 1999. It's been a long time, but it still feels like he was here yesterday. He lives on in his family. You can see my Dad in me and my brother Trevor, and now in my daughter Ellie. I can see my Dad in his mother, sister, brother, and 4 nephews. He will never be truly gone.

Instead of dwelling on the fact that he had this fatal disease, he LIVED. He was so happy, he loved life. He went to work, stayed fit by going to the gym, provided for his family, and made mine and my brother's childhood so much fun!"

So yeah, Ashley, enjoy your tickets. Somehow, you were meant to win these. This one's for you and your Dad...

A Beautiful Story About A Peterborough Woman's Plan To Retrace Her Late Dad's Bike Trip In Ireland In 1973

[UPDATE (July 7th): Huffington Post picks up our post.]

---------------

ORIGINAL POST (July 6th)

Peterborough's Megan Murphy was broken and lost when her mother and father passed away—her Dad, Marty, in 2004 at age 57, and Mom, Mary, in 2012 at age 65.

She was depressed after their deaths—both lost battles with cancer, and Megan had been by their side all along—and had lost her spirit for life. She could barely breathe. And so, she did this a lot...

Her parents had been everything to her...

On the eve of her 35th birthday, she found herself returning her engagement ring to her newly titled “ex”-fiance after a five year relationship, packing up her small car with all her belongings, and moving back to her childhood home after her Mom's death...

Once there, she began going through all her parent's old belongings...

Among the belongings, tucked away in a long ignored box, was a diary of her Dad's she’d believed had been lost years before in a house fire. She read the diary. She was enthralled. In the wonderfully descriptive journals, her father wrote about a solo bicycle trip he had taken through southern Ireland in 1973 at age 26 when he was trying to "find himself". The diary chronicled his trip in the beautiful country, his ancestral home, and how this essentially became his journey into manhood.

Megan also found his 1973, 10 speed Peugeot hanging in the rafters of the family garage. It was on this bike, she writes, that her father discovered on his Ireland trip "the beauty of the country that was his ancestral home, the sacredness of solitude, the sting of loneliness, the joy of laughter and the value of his fellow man. He stopped. He took a moment to stand on the precipice and just breathe."

Megan became obsessed with the idea of re-creating her Dad's trip.

"Maybe if I go backwards and recreate this journey, I can find my own path forward," she writes. And live again. Be this Megan again...

Megan took that old, 40-year-old bike with such a rich history and refurbished it. And now it's this...

She brought it back to life and is training on it because she has an amazing plan. A beautiful plan. She's taking the bike, his journal and a film crew to Ireland to retrace his steps. To find her lost spark—"to find my whimsy again," she says.

Megan now, her Dad then

Megan now, her Dad then

Megan, an actor, comedian and radio show host in Peterborough, is calling this documentary she'll be doing in Ireland, appropriately enough, Murphy's Law. She's funding it through inheritance money from her parents, and by raising money through an Indiegogo campaign. Her goal is $25,000, and she has raised more than $8,000 so far. She needs your help to keep the momentum going, and there is plenty...

Because really, her journey isn't just a personal one about finding herself and learning more about her Dad, her parents, her life, and what makes her happy. It's a universal one we all go through with finding ourselves, finding the meaning of life—and where we're supposed to fit in that. One Hollywood ending could have her meeting an Irishman and riding off into the Irish countryside on that bike with him...

And maybe marrying that Irishman, and having an awesome wedding and marriage like her parents...

Another narrative could be Megan just finding her true purpose in life. And being this again...

...and not this..

As Megan writes, an Irish proverb says “Some journeys aren’t meant to be taken alone." So, yes, somehow it feels like we're all taking this journey with her.

Every day.

Homecoming: The Bierk Brothers Art Exhibit "After" Opens June 28th At Art Gallery Of Peterborough

For brothers Alex, Jeff, Nick, and Charlie, this summer is a homecoming years in the making. Sons of the late great artist David Bierk, they are bringing their own brand of art to display at Art Gallery of Peterborough in an exhibit titled "AFTER" from June 28th to August 31st—along with some of their father's work as well.

Having grown up in Peterborough under the watchful tutelage of David—one of the greatest artists our country has ever known—the brothers have evolved into incredible artists in their own right. After years of study and practice, and many life experiences, they have carved out a niche for themselves unmatched amongst their peers.

Growing up with well-known siblings Sebastian (musician)—known as Sebastian Bach—Zac (former pro goalie), and sister Dylan (model/actress), these four now have the spotlight on themselves and rightly so.

Alex, Nick and Charlie have all taken up the brush like their father, creating works that need to be seen first-hand to be believed. Jeff, in his own right, has become a photographer whose images capture incredible and often times unreal scenes and subjects.

While they have all moved to Toronto to continue the careers, they have worked so hard—and fulfilled a dream—to return to their hometown to display their work.

People who may have known them as youngsters will be amazed at the growth and development they have achieved through years of putting in time and effort to perfect their crafts.
