60 New Canadians Laced Up Skates For Very First Time Before Peterborough Petes Game Last Night

The Peterborough Petes won in OT 6-5 over the Niagara IceDogs on Thursday night, moving them into first place in the Ontario Hockey League.

But it was what happened on the Memorial Centre ice before the game that made the night extra special.

The Petes teamed up with Rebound Skates and Golf to bring 60 new Canadians to the Peterborough Memorial Centre to try hockey.

For many, it was their first time on skates—a local girls team helped them learn—and their first time taking in a live hockey game.

The night was a collaboration between the Peterborough Petes organization and New Canadians Centre in Peterborough. The skaters ranged in age from 6 to 60, with the bulk of them being tweens and teens.

It was a truly special night that these newcomers will never forget as hockey once again brought the community together.

World War 1 Medals Were Returned To Peterborough Woman After Amazing Discovery At Habitat For Humanity ReStore In Peterborough

Peterborough’s Catherine Allen, a resident at Princess Gardens Retirement Residence, had a surprise and surreal moment when she found out a significant collection of World War I medals that belonged to her father and grandfather that she had no idea were missing were returned to her by Habitat for Humanity ReStore staff.

Indeed, while every donation at ReStore can lead to a new adventure, this one at their north-end location in Peterborough definitely topped them all.

Somehow Catherine’s family medals and a swagger stick—carried by a uniformed person as a symbol of authority—landed in the bottom of a donation box there, and staff worked diligently to return them to their rightful owner.

“We knew this collection was sentimental and had to be returned to the family,” says Christina Skuce, Director of Philanthropy & Communications with Habitat Peterborough.

Habitat Peterborough board member Jill Bennett took it upon herself to find the family, spending weeks in places like Ancestry.ca and elsewhere in the course of her sleuthing, investigating the origins of the medals.

Through Bennett’s research, and the help of Major W.G. Campbell, Medals Advisor with The Royal Canadian Legion, she was able to trace the medals to Major George Raymore Scott and Honourary Captain Reverend Andrew Joseph Vining.

From there, the medals were traced to Catherine Allen, a ninetysomething relative living in Peterborough at Princess Gardens. Catherine is the daughter of Major Scott and granddaughter of Reverend Vining (father-in-law of Major Scott).

The medals in the collection include a Silver Jubilee Medal (1935), Victory Medal (1914-1918) and a British War Medal (1914-1918), all awarded to Reverend Vining. The collection also includes a British Coronation Medal (1937), Canadian Efficiency Decoration (1940), Victory Medal (1914-1918), and a British War Medal (1914-1918), all awarded to Major Scott. The collection also includes a swagger stick stamped with Major Scott’s initials. (Major Scott was a doctor in Peterborough and in 1946 founded the Scott Medical Clinic on George Street.)

“This is an important piece of a family’s history and I was honoured to do my part to reunite this precious collection with its rightful owners,” says Bennett.

One thing’s for sure: This Remembrance Day has become extra special for Catherine and her family.

It's Going To Be A Really Wet Halloween & High Winds Possible Friday

Ensure your outside Halloween decorations are secure and rain jackets ready, as a special weather statement has been issued for the area with significant rainfall possible Wednesday through Friday afternoon.

Rain is forecast to begin Wednesday afternoon and end by Friday afternoon, with 30 to 50 mm possible. Unfortunately, the heaviest rain is forecast to occur on Thursday evening as the kids head out for Halloween.

As well, strong northwesterly to westerly wind gusts of 70 km/h are possible Friday morning into Friday afternoon so you might want to bring in some of those Halloween decorations Thursday night.

Make sure to take extra care if you’re out driving or walking the streets on Halloween, as visibility could be reduced further in the heavy rain.

Trent U's New Sign Is Lit

Trent University has installed a stunning new sign located at the main entrance on the West Bank of their Symons Campus.

The gateway features an impressive stone cairn, designed to symbolize the beginning of a journey. The sign also draws inspiration (and materials) from the community that surrounds it, and is made of limestone and basalt stone quarried in the area.

Drawing inspiration from Trent’s own picturesque landscape, the refreshed entrance sign is complementary to the campus’ iconic Ron Thom architecture and the beautiful natural surroundings.

It looks awesome during the day but at night—wow—as the Trent letters and logo are illuminated in green in the dark, making for great photo-ops.

All materials and labour for the new sign were locally sourced: the concept was designed by Basterfield and Associates, all stone was locally mined and processed by Drain Bros, the sign itself was created by Media Works in Millbrook, and all electrical work was done by Dan Healey Electric.

A Tent City Is Emerging In Peterborough At Victoria Park

With the closure of the Warming Room until they can find a new home, a Tent City is emerging at Victoria Park where the homeless are living.

There have a been a couple tents there since May, but now about 20 tents have popped up in recent days since the Warming Room—where the homeless could stay overnight—announced its lease has expired with Murray Street Baptist Church, which could no longer house them until the Fall as they are going through renovations.

“City staff and community partners have been working hard to help those affected by the closure of the Warming Room,” says Mayor Therrien in a media release. “As of July 1st, there are 20 beds available to those are living rough.”

Mayor Therrien adds that outreach works are actively reaching out to make connections between people staying in tents and available housing or shelter accommodations—a process that takes time.

In the meantime, with the city in a heat wave right now, there is growing concern for the health and welfare for these people living in tents.

As such, a free water station has been set up for the remainder of the week in Mayor Therrien’s parking space at City Hall parking lot near Victoria Park. There is also a portable washroom located in the park, and a supply tent where people can drop off donations.

As well, many local organizations such as PARN are stepping up to help out.

As are concerned individuals in the community, such as Laurie English, who dropped off a bunch of supplies such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, disposable razors, juice boxes and individually wrapped crackers to the supply tent at Victoria Park on Thursday (July 4th).

”My donation doesn’t scratch the surface of the need, but when you are blessed as we are it’s the right thing to do,” English tells PTBOCanada. Indeed, every donation and kind gesture adds up to making a great impact.”

If you are donating to the supply tent, people also require baby wipes, bug spray, snacks, toiletries, garbage and recyling bags, tampons/pads, sleeping bags/tarps, T-shirts (men’s L/XL) and five people need tents.

Anyone who needs emergency shelter is asked to visit Peterborough Social Services at 178 Charlotte St. or contact Social Services by phone at 705.748.8830 between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, or at 705.927.0096 overnight, on weekends and on holidays.

We want to to thank our customers that have supported us from the day we opened our doors, and the incredible staff that we’ve had over the years. We will forever be grateful!!

With all the love and gratitude,
