10th Annual Purple Onion Festival Cancelled Due to "Ongoing Logistic Issues"

The 2022 Purple Onion Festival scheduled for Saturday in Millennium Park has been cancelled according to Transition Town Peterborough due to ‘ongoing logistic issues with the City of Peterborough’ announced Sunday afternoon.

The Purple Onion Festival celebrates the security of life essentials such as local food, water, energy, culture and wellness.

Transition Town Peterborough’s Facebook page issued a statement regarding the cancellation:

It is with saddened hearts, Transition Town Peterborough has decided to cancel this year's Purple Onion Festival due to ongoing logistic issues with the City of Peterborough. The last minute demands made by the city have made it impossible to continue this year's festival. We look forward to working with council and staff to eradicate and streamline the process for next year. Further, it is our position that, unrealistic hurdles put forth by the city, along with their lack of co-operation or any attempt to help resolve, rather than hinder the process, are also deterrents for others to attempt to stage similar community events. Community involvement is at the heart of every healthy city.

It also came to our attention that, as much of the infrastructure is left in the Millennium Park overnight, the presence of the homeless in the park at night has created a heightened risk of vandalism and forced a major supplier to rethink and ultimately withdraw from the event due to their concern with working with the City. This situation evolved despite the good intentions of the festival planning team to highlight the homeless issue through the showing of the PATH Tiny Home, and to tie homelessness to the local food security issue identifying both as serious outcomes of the Climate Crisis Emergency that now engulfs us all.

Our apologies to the many volunteers, sponsors and vendors who have shown their support this year and in years past.

We hope to see everyone in 2023.

The event was to include live music, a craft beer garden, local farmers, an eat local challenge, the healthy kids’ corner and more. Guenther Schubert was the returning host chef of the Taste of the Kawarthas food tent.

The Purple Onion Festival was last run in 2019, prior to the pandemic.

Tribute Band Against the Wind Bringing the Bob Seger Experience Back to Peterborough

Tribute band Against the Wind is bringing the Bob Seger Experience back to Peterborough on Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of the Showplace Performance Centre.

Photo courtesy of Against the Wind.

The group consists of an eight-piece band, lead singer and three female backup singers in the band. The show will play through five decades of Seger jams such as “Night Moves”, “Roll Me Away” and the Grammy Award-winning hit “Against The Wind.”

The Toronto-based tribute band’s “Heartland Rock” performance guarantees an authentic vocal portrayal of Seger-Rock.

“(The audience) is going to get a very high-calibre representation of Bob Seger’s music,” said Jeffrey Dean Goldstein, Against the Wind’s drummer. “It’s energetic, it’s tight, it’s powerful. The show is very well-paced.“

He says Against the Wind emulates the same Seger-style rock performance Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet band, a group Seger formed in 1974, would give the crowd.

“It’s going to be a feel-good type of experience because when people hear this music they think back to their youth,” explained Goldstein. “There’s so many things that people did in life to this music, and (the show) brings back these memories.”

For the younger crowd, Goldstein assures the calibre of the high-energy show will entertain them.

“People will be up in the aisles dancing, like they do at every show, and singing along. That’s what we encourage,” he said.

Photo courtesy of Against the Wind.

Goldstein formed the tribute band in 2012. He says he’s been a Seger fan since he was 13.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, the band was unable to tour for the last couple of years and say that they are happy to be back now in 2022.

“Peterborough’s been wonderful to Against the Wind,” said Goldstein. “We played at Musicfest in 2018 and we’re trying to get a spot for next year. We used to play at Market Hall, we performed there three times and we were very well-supported.”

Doors open for the show at 6:30 p.m. and it will start at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available online or contact the Showplace box office at 705-742-7469.

Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride Week Will Celebrate Joy And Resistance This September

Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride Week will take place this year from Sept. 16 - 25. This marks the 20th year of Pride in Peterborough.

Community outreach booth, 2019. Photo courtesy of Peterborough Pride.

“Joy & Resistance” is the theme of Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride Week 2022.

The theme is a nod to the origins of ‘Pride’, which started as a riot, an act of resistance against police violence, racism and transphobia.

“Many of us have gained the ability to unapologetically and joyfully be ourselves, without the fear of violence or criminalization,” Peterborough Pride stated in a release. “This isn’t true for everyone and many do not have this luxury. We invite everyone to embrace the theme of Pride Week, take action and make it your own.”

Plans are in the works for over 20 community run virtual and in-person gatherings that folks can participate in safely. Out of an abundance of caution, organizers encourage participants to wear masks at events to help protect themselves and others.

Pride Week events will continue to provide space for participants to gather, share ideas, speak their minds, support each other, and have fun in a safe and accepting environment.

The Pride Parade will be on Sept. 24 starting at 2 p.m. from City Hall. A road closure will be in effect along the parade route, with George St. from McDonnell to Murray closed at 12 p.m. and rolling closures from 2 -3 p.m. southbound on George St. to King Street and east over to Millennium Park.

There will be no parking on George Street between McDonnel and Murray Streets from noon to 2:30 p.m. and south along the parade route from 1- 3 p.m.

Everyone is invited to show their Pride and express their feelings by decorating their homes and businesses to signal that they are part of a welcoming community where nobody needs to feel alone or unsafe.

The mandate of the festival is to promote folk music and arts within the Peterborough community as well as provide safely accessible venues and diverse audiences for both local and Canadian touring musicians.

The 2022 edition of Folk Fest featured acts such as the Sudbury string band, Murder Murder.

I, The Mountain from Kitchener played through sunset and into the evening.

Afie Jurvanen, known by his stage name, Bahamas headlined the show with a packed performance on Saturday Night. Jurvanen was born in Toronto and raised in Barrie.
