Habitat for Humanity Ceremony This Friday To Mark Completion of Three New Homes For Peterborough Families

Peterborough's Habitat for Humanity chapter started here back in 2002 and since then, with the help of many volunteers and the community's help, this non-profit organization has given many families a secure and safe home to be proud of and to know they were part of building their very own home. Just recently, Habitat has completed three homes on Towerhill Road with the help of Fleming's Sustainable Building Program, the Peterborough Professional Firefighters Association and community volunteers.
 


This Friday (October 22nd), there will be a dedication and celebration ceremony at 1 p.m. at 288 Towerhill Road to honour the accomplishment and the completion of these homes. It's an opportunity to meet the families and people of the community that in some way contributed to this wonderful cause.

Explore Peterborough's Spooky Side by taking a Ghost Walk

/

Bruce Fitzpatrick leads the walk through Peterborough's spooky past.

Every Friday night at 9 p.m.—through the rest of July and August—a hooded tour guide named Bruce Fitzpatrick will take you through some spooky stories on Eerie Ashburnham Ghost Walks. Ashburnham is chock full of interesting tales involving Quaker Oats, the Hunter Street Bridge and numerous old houses that date back hundreds of years.

The Ghost Walk is put on by the Trent Valley Archives and costs $10 to participate—no reservations are necessary. Meet your guide at the corner of Hunter St./Driscoll Terrace.

Worldwide Photo Walk Is This Saturday in The Patch!

Peterborough is partaking in the 3rd Annual Worldwide Photo Walk this Saturday (July 24th). The photo walk leader in the Patch is PtboCanada's very own photographer, Evan Holt. All participants should meet up first at Natas Cafe at 8:45 a.m. ("torrential downpour" rain date is Sunday the 25th). After that, the group will set out across the Hunter Street Bridge, through downtown East City and over to the Lift Lock. The trip back will take the group past Rogers Cove and along the Millennium Trail. The walk ends at around 10:30 a.m. at Silver Bean Café in Millennium Park.

The idea is to capture great images, and submit your best one to the walk leader, Evan. The person selected as having the best photo of the walk will win a free photography book and go on to compete against the other best photos taken from Worldwide Photo Walk groups from around the planet—in 2008, there were 241 groups that participated in Worldwide Photo Walk; in 2009, there were more than 900 groups; and this year there are already more than 1,100 groups.

There is no fee to participate, but pre-registration is required. All you need is a camera—even a disposable will do—and feel free to ask any photography questions you may have to Evan. The day is about having fun and exploring a bit of Peterborough.

Stephen Fearing Admires Peterborough's Old Buildings

In the first part of this interview with Canadian folk singer-songwriter Stephen Fearing (from Blackie & the Rodeo Kings) after a recent gig at PCVS, Fearing speaks fondly of all of the old buildings in Peterborough. He marvels at the old PCVS auditorium in particular, calling it "easily one of the best venues I've ever played."

Construction has begun at former Rock Haven location

Rock Haven will be missed.The Rock Haven, which opened on November 17, 1959, has been fully demolished. Construction has begun there on a new location for Shoppers Drug Mart.
