Five Day Isolation No Longer Necessary For COVID Positive Ontarians

Ontarians that test positive for COVID-19 are no longer required to isolate for five days and instead are advised to isolate until their fever has cleared and symptoms have improved for at least 24 hours.

File Photo.

This announced was made on Wednesday by Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore at a press briefing.

“The main guidance now for the fall has to apply to all respiratory illnesses. So we need to have an approach that will decrease the transmission of RSV, influenza and COVID,” Moore said.

Moore noted that the ‘general advice’ is to stay at home when sick with any sort of virus or sickness.

He also highlighted that this news applies to the general public but for those working and living in high-risk facilities like long-term care and acute care facilities a ten day isolation period will still be in effect.

Moore confirmed at the press briefing that this announcement means those testing positive for COVID-19 can return to school or work if they are no longer experiencing symptoms, but individuals should continue to wear a mask in public for ten days from symptom onset.

He also noted that with a return to school and weather changing, Ontario is entering respiratory virus season.

Proper handwashing, improved ventilation in schools and workplaces and increased precautions should help prevent all respiratory viruses.

'Discover Peterborough Bingo' Invites New Trent Students To Explore The City

Trent University, Peterborough DBIA and Peterborough & The Kawarthas Tourism have teamed up for a second year to host ‘Discover Peterborough Bingo’ for new Trent University students.

Terry Guiel (DBIA) Alison Scholl (Trent University) and Joe Rees (PKT).

This interactive scavenger hunt features stops at local shops, cafes, and restaurants in the downtown to help orient and connect incoming students with their home away from home.

"Trent students have a significant impact on our community, adding to the cultural and economic vitality of the city," said Alison Scholl, manager of Community Relations at Trent University. "Partnering with the DBIA and PKT to host Discover Peterborough Bingo is just one of the ways Trent supports the community, and one of the ways the community in turn supports our students. This is a fun and unique way to help our incoming students get to know and see themselves at home in Peterborough."

Between September 5 and October 7, Trent students will complete activities at a number of places downtown and on campus. Once two lines are completed on their Bingo card, students will be entered to win one of four prize packs, which include a $500 Downtown Boro gift card, and prizes from Trent, PKT and local businesses.

Mike Watt, owner of Flavour Fashion downtown, says this will have a great impact on local businesses.

“As a small business owner you wear a thousand different hats,” he said. “A huge part of our job is just drawing people in, so it’s great to have people in our corner that are encouraging people to shop locally.”

Bingo cards can be picked up by students at Residence Service Centres (LEC 211and GCS 212), Trent Central Student Association and at Trent International and College offices.

Cameron, who is from Kingston, was visiting her grandparents and spent the weekend preparing for her fundraiser.

“It's never too early to teach children the value of empathy, volunteering, and charitable giving,” said Mike and Sue Gauthier, Cameron’s grandparents.

Mike is a manager at Stenson Family Market in Peterborough, where the lemonade stand was held.

Cameron provided free lemonade, chips and candies in exchange for donations to The Mount Community Centre to help them continue their work in the development of affordable housing and food security.

“Helping our kids experience the happiness that comes from giving to others is probably one of the most valuable ways we can nurture generosity in them,” said Gauthier. “By giving, children truly understand what kindness is and the importance of giving, not just receiving.”

“Children naturally love to help others, so getting them involved in donating to charity or volunteering when they are young is a great idea,’ said Stephen Kylie, Board Chairperson at The Mount Community Centre. “We sincerely thank Loretta and her family for their involvement in helping raise money for The Mount Community Centre.”
