City of Peterborough Announces Large Item Collection Dates

The City of Peterborough will pick up items larger than the weekly garbage allowance such as furniture and appliances for a fee; with the next large item collection on Monday, June 26.

The cost for this service is $30 for the first item and $10 for any additional item. Mattresses and box springs are $30 each and do not count as a first item.

Residents can book their collection online or by phone at 705-742-7777 ext. 1865. The deadline for booking is 4:30 p.m. the Tuesday before each collection date. For example, for service on June 26, the collection must be booked by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

Large item collection continues monthly until September. The upcoming dates for collection in 2023 are:

  1. Monday, July 24

  2. Monday, August 28

  3. Monday, September 25

Residents who have scheduled collection should have their items to the curb by 7 a.m. the first day of collection. Depending on the number of pickups scheduled each month, collection could take a few days to complete. Residents are asked to leave the items they have booked for pickup at the curb.

Refrigeration items must have the Freon removed prior to collection. Automobile parts, televisions and monitors are not accepted in this collection. These items can be disposed of at the Hazardous and Electronic Waste Depot at 400 Pido Rd., open Wednesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Building or construction material can be disposed of at the Landfill at 1260 Bensfort Rd.

City of Peterborough Accepting Bookings for Final Curbside Large Item Pickup of the Year

The City of Peterborough is accepting online bookings for large-item curbside pickups for the week of Sep. 26 as the final service of the year.

Bookings must be arranged by 11:59 p.m. on Sep. 22 online. The cost is $30 for the first item and $10 for each additional piece.

Mattresses and box springs do not count as the first item and are $30 apiece to be disposed of. Any mattress and/or boxspring infected by bed bugs, these items must be placed in a clear plastic bag.

Free bags (one per item) are available from the City (pick up at City Hall and Public Works).

The following are the City’s terms and conditions for large-item pickups.

  • Please note that all materials must be set out curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled day of pick up. Materials may be set out the day before but not until after 7:00 p.m.

  • Public Works starts collecting large articles at 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week, and collections may continue for several days before the entire City is completed. Please do not remove items from the curb if they have not been collected on Monday.

  • Refrigeration appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, etc. must be tagged as having the refrigerant removed. Items not tagged will NOT be picked up.

  • Construction, renovation or demolition materials are not collected at the curb.

  • If the item is or contains glass, the glass should be taped corner to corner with an X for safety

  • No refunds for cancelled service

The following items are accepted as large articles:

  • Air conditioner*

  • Air hockey table

  • Area rug/carpet/underpad (rolled)

  • Bathtub

  • BBQ (no propane tanks)

  • Bicycle

  • Box spring/bed frame

  • Chair (any type)

  • Change table

  • Stones, blocks, bricks, aggregate

  • Roofing materials and eavestroughing

Here Is A Short Article On The Large Article Pick-Ups For This Year

The first of six large article collection events for 2017 is on Monday, April 24th. The remaining 2017 dates are as follows:

• Monday, May 29th
• Monday, June 26th
• Monday, July 24th
• Monday, August 28th
• Monday, September 25th

For a fee, the City will pick up items larger than the weekly allowance, such as furniture and appliances. The cost for this service is $15 for the first item and $5 for any additional item. (Note that mattresses and box springs are $15 each and do not count as a first item.)
 
You can also schedule your pick-up using the City’s online tool at peterborough.ca. Under “Online Services”, select “Large Article Collection”. Select the collection date you prefer, the items you want collected and set up an account with your credit card for payment.
 
Large article collection can also be scheduled in person at City Hall, 500 George Street North, or the Public Works Office at 182 Townsend Street until 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 20th.
