Peterborough Police Investigate Shooting With One Man Sent to Hospital; Three Impaired Driving Arrests Over the Weekend

Peterborough Police Service are investigating a shooting incident that occurred near Dalhousie Street and Stewart Street Monday morning.

Three impaired driving arrests since Friday as reported in a press release on Monday.

The emergency call regarding the shooting was made around 11 a.m. on Monday. A man was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre and then taken by helicopter to a Toronto hospital. 

Peterborough Police do not believe this is a random incident and assure this incident is currently not a threat to public safety. 

Detectives are investigating this incident with an increased police presence in the area. 

A 44-year-old Peterborough woman was charged Friday evening after a call of a possible impaired driver on Chemong Road and Towerhill Road parking lot area around 9:00 p.m.

Officers did a traffic stop on the vehicle and saw signs of impairment.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - drugs

  • Drive motor vehicle - no licence (Highway Traffic Act)

  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available (Cannabis Control Act)

  • Fail to surrender insurance card (Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act)

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4. 

A 51-year-old Warkworth man also is facing charges of impaired driving after a call of a suspected impaired driver near Wolsely Street and Park Street North around 11:50 p.m. on Friday.

The vehicle was located near Wolsely Street and Donegal Street and had two flat tires on the right side while on the curb. Officers detected impairment signs in the driver upon investigation.

The Warkworth man was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

  • Drive motor vehicle in contravention of conditions (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was issued a 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impound. They were released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on July 27.

A 32-year-old City of Kawartha Lakes man is facing an impaired charge after an incident near Chemong Road and Wolsely Street around 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Officers were called to the area about a suspicious vehicle and discovered signs of impairment with the driver upon arrival.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - drugs

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 2.

Peterborough Police Reminds City of Road Safety During National Impaired Driving Prevention Week

Peterborough Police is reminding residents not to drive a vehicle under the influence during National Impaired Driving Prevention Week.

The week runs from March 20 - 26.

Peterborough Police laid 100 impaired charges last year (56 were alcohol-related and 44 were drug-related).

No impaired charges were laid on St. Patrick’s Day last Thursday.

Officers stopped 1,046 vehicles at four different checkpoints, administered seven roadside tests with no charges laid.

Millbrook Man Facing Impaired Driving Charges After Crashing Vehicle & Killing His Dog

Another tragedy from drinking and driving, an animal's life lost. See below from Peterborough Police release on Thursday (December 29th)...

On December 27, 2016 in the early afternoon a Millbrook man was driving his vehicle on Zion Line in Cavan Monaghan Township when he lost control and left the roadway. The vehicle entered the ditch, struck a tree and culvert. The driver was injured in the crash but managed to flag a passerby down for help. The man’s dog was in the vehicle at the time of the crash and was unfortunately killed as a result.
 
Emergency crews responded to assist the man who had been taken to another location for treatment. The subsequent investigation determined that at the time of the crash the man was impaired by alcohol.
 
Kyle Reininger 24, of Main Street, Millbrook is charged with Drive while Ability Impaired and Drive with more than 80 mgs.
 
The accused is to appear in court on January 19, 2016.
