Dan Brandsma was recently introduced as the new co-owner of the Silver Bean Cafe. The now iconic Silver Bean was started by Michael and Andrea VanDerHerberg in 2003 and has built a loyal following for both its setting on the Otonabee River, the food, and the friendly staff. Andrea decided that it was time to move on and Dan Brandsma stepped in to join Michael as the new co-owner. Expect the same great food and atmosphere, and think about renting the event space next door for your next event.

A Deer Made Several Tourist Stops In Downtown Peterborough Today

The Silver Bean Cafe on the Otonabee River often does a Customer Of The Day on their board, and Friday's might be an animal: a deer.

Yes, a deer made a jaunt near the cafe in Millennium Park in downtown Peterborough on Friday morning (May 26th)—right near the MNR building, appropriately enough—and Bean staff member Sam Milliken witnessed it, along with owner Andrea VanDerHerberg and her kids.

"William, Grace, Andrea and I were sneaking up on rabbits nibbling by the train tracks, when all of a sudden we saw a deer running toward us at full speed down the tracks," Milliken tells PTBOCanada. "It crossed through some gardens, ran along the river line until it hopped the fence by the cafe, and I guess having nowhere else to go, it jumped into the river and swam to the nearest island!"

They were all too excited in the moment to get photos of the deer, but did capture this pic below of it swimming to the island (the little dot in the pic is the deer) that they posted to their Facebook page...

So Oh Deer, what a Friday it was at The Bean.

The Silver Bean is making good use of both their "off season" and land resources by combining both buildings as they undergo some renovations.

The breezeway is no more, and the kitchen will be expanded. After work is complete, there will be an additional 128 square feet.

Here are some of the other plans they have in store for 2014:

  • Showing every game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil (between June 12 and July 13)
  • A weekly board games night
  • A dedicated Scrabble afternoon (likely Tuesday afternoons)
  • A chess night (likely Monday evenings)
  • More outdoor concerts
  • More #BeanUp (tweetup) social gatherings
  • Gatherings of people in specific professions (cycling, graphic designers, writers, ukulele players, etc)
  • Peterborough Chamber of Commerce Summer Social

The Silver Bean Cafe will reopen on May 1st, 2014. The countdown is on!

DBIA Featured Post: Silver Bean Café

Located in Millennium Park along the Otonabee River just off the intersection of King and Water in downtown Peterborough, the Silver Bean Café (100 King St.) is known as “Your waterfront cottage in the city”. Owned and operated by Andrea and Michael Vanderherberg (parents of 1 1/2 yr old son William, pictured below being held by Andrea), and along with 10 staff, the Silver Bean has become a sort of community hub and gathering spot for locals to sit back and enjoy great fare and company along the river.

Purchased in 2003 by Andrea, the café has recently acquired a 10-year contract with the City of Peterborough at their location. By doing this long-term lease, it has encouraged them to upgrade and expand their products—most recently, they put in an ice-cream parlour based on a survey they put out last season asking their customers what they wanted.

They offer a wide variety of quality food, which is locally sourced as much as possible, from simple sandwiches and salads to great espressos and other drinks—all of which can be viewed on their website.

They gladly host baby showers, birthday parties, weddings and theatrical events, and are open for business during Ribfest and the Purple Onion Festival. They aim to please and to make customer's experiences memorable. The Silver Bean Café opens for the season on May 1st, so head on down to discover this secluded gem in the heart of downtown Peterborough.

Silver Bean Café Celebrates The Beginning Of Their 10th Season

The Silver Bean Café opened yesterday, kicking off their 10th season.

It was a bustlin' place on Day One, to be with many local folks who had been counting down the days until opening day.

The weather seems promising for the next few days to spend enjoying a latté at the "cottage"!
