The tournament was sidelined last year but returned this year, seeing more golfers than ever.

“It just shows that the community still likes to get out and have fun together,” said Dean Porter, Alumni president.

The event honoured the 1984 and 2004 Mann Cup Champion Lakers. Several alumni, such as Paul Evans and Johnny ‘Shooter’ Davis, were in attendance and performed the ceremonial tee-off at the first hole.

“Lacrosse brings together a group of guys that were together in 84',” said Porter. “We got a good turnout here; they all came back; most of these guys still see each other and they all come to the alumni box during the games throughout the season.”

All proceeds go towards the Peterborough Lakers Alumni who support the Peterborough area's sustainability and grassroots lacrosse programs.

“Lacrosse is huge in Peterborough,” said Porter.

The team also honours the 1984 and 2004 Mann Cup Champions on June 25 at home against the Owen Sound North Stars.

Cupido spent time with the Cobourg Kodiaks and Six Nations Chiefs. He spent last MSL season injured and as an assistant coach with the Chiefs during their Mann Cup run before being released.

“Being an older guy and a veteran will help,” said Cupido. “Every year I learn a little bit more of the game and having an opportunity to step behind the bench I got to see things from a different vantage point. That’s certainly going to help my game and hopefully I can pass on some of those things to the younger guys as well.”

This winter, Jensen made his professional debut for Lakers’s head coach Mike Hasen and his Rochester Knighthawks and is in his rookie MSL season.

The New Westminster, B.C. 25-year-old played junior A lacrosse for the Salmonbellies. He is the younger brother of NLL MVP Josh Byrne.

The Lakers are on the road this Thursday in Brampton. Cupido, Jensen and newly acquired Rob Hellyer are expected to be in the lineup.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 2004 team’s national senior lacrosse championship win and the 40th anniversary of the 1984 team's Mann Cup victory.

The organization is commemorating the milestones and is teaming with the Lakers Alumni to host two special events.

The festivities start with the Alumni Golf Tournament on June 21 at Keystone Links. Each participant will receive a commemorative Peterborough Lakers Alumni hat featuring the 1984 and 2004 teams courtesy of Imprinted Apparel.

On June 25, the Lakers will host both teams for a special ceremony, during which they will be honoured for their achievements at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

“We are thrilled to recognize the achievements of these two legendary teams,” said Dean Porter, Lakers Alumni president. “Their contributions to the sport of lacrosse and the Peterborough community are immeasurable, and we are honoured to celebrate their success.”.

Teachers, the Boro Boys and members of the 1967 undefeated Peterborough PCOs took on the Peterborough Lakers (both past and present) to a 16-16 draw.

Raffles, admission fees and donation boxes contributed to the fundraiser for the one-day event. All proceeds benefit Special Olympic athletes in a variety of ways.

"The money can fund a lot of things,” said Ernie Ellement, Boro Boys founder. “It could be as something as simple as sports equipment to helping some families with registrations."

The annual game was on hold for the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic so having the fundraiser was refreshing for Bill Chapman, Special Olympics coordinator.

"The turnout was fantastic," he said. "It was a fundraiser that I've been to like no other. Peterborough is always a community to go to bat for every organization we have.”

The intermission featured shootouts with the Lakers broadcast crew, Peterborough PCO members and Special Olympic athletes.

Players wore special red socks in honour of the Peterborough Red Stockings as they played the first lacrosse game in town in 1872.

All proceeds go towards the Peterborough Lakers Alumni that support the sustainability and grassroots lacrosse programs in the Peterborough area.

“We feel that if we don't focus on that area, then we're just going to dissolve after so many years so focusing on that, trying to make sure we have new kids coming into the game and trying to make it non-cost prohibitive for families,” said Jamie Batley, Alumni president.

Lakers alumni Doug Evans, Paul Evans, Brian Evans, Bob Wasson and Johnny “Shooter” Davis all took ceremonial tee shots from the first hole prior to the tournament.

The tournament had prizes for lowest score, closest-to-pin shots and longest drives for both the male and female categories.

“We know as being sports people, if you put your kids in sports, they learn teamwork, they learn communication, they learn how to work in a group. Lacrosse is a great sport to learn all those values,” said Batley.

Members of local lacrosse communities attended the ceremony as Mayor Diane Therrien made the proclamation at City Hall. The meeting honoured Peterborough and its rich history with lacrosse also known as the Creator’s Game.

“Lacrosse is one of the oldest sports in Peterborough, an Indigenous sport even predating even that time so there's such a long history and tradition,” said Therrien. “It's going to be a great summer and highlighting all the work that's been in the past and that's led us up to this point today.”

“If you're getting into the lacrosse community, they're just good people,” said Tim Barrie, Hall of Fame lacrosse goaltender. “We've always been called the 'blue-collar sport' but it's the people who've had their hearts in the right spot and we have so many volunteers that readily give back to the game.”

The flag will remain at City Hall for one week then will be commemorated at the Peterborough & District Sports Hall Of Fame.

The 150 years marks the first game of lacrosse being played in town as the Peterborough Red Stockings played the first game in 1872.

Peterborough has won 29 national champions while youth teams have won over 100 provincial titles.

The Peterborough Lakers are three-time defending Mann Cup Champions. Their home opener is on June 2 against Cobourg Kodiaks. The Lakers have not played in over two seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
