PTBOCanada Featured Post: Magna Carta At Fort York National Historic Site

Listen up folks, one of the world's best known historic documents, Magna Carta, is being exhibited for the first time in Toronto until November 7 at Fort York National Historic Site.

This year marks the 800th anniversary of the first sealing of Magna Carta, meaning "The Great Charter". King John sealed the document on June 15th, 1215.

Magna Carta and its companion document, the Charter of the Forest, set the groundwork for many concepts defining democratic life today. As symbols of justice, they act as reminders that those who govern do so only by the consent of the people.

Twenty-four copies of documents survived from the 1215-1300 period, including Durham Cathedral's issue from 1300—which is the version being displayed in Toronto. This version was the last issue of Magna Carta sealed by an English monarch.

The Charter of the Forest also appears in Toronto in its 1300 issue for the first time. The Charter helped establish principles of universal human rights and protection of the commons to limit privatization and encourage stewardship for shared resources.

Housed in special cases, these documents are the centerpiece of a bilingual, interpretive and interactive exhibit based on three themes: History, Legacy and Justice Today. A bilingual documentary film is also being shown at the exhibition. As well, the evolution of democracy, rights and justice in Toronto is featured at the Toronto exhibition.

Toronto is one of four Canadian cities exhibiting Magna Carta as part of a national tour developed by Magna Carta Canada. The documents are on loan from Durham Cathedral in the United Kingdom. The tour has been designed and organized by Lord Cultural Resources, with the generous support of the Government of Canada. For information on the exhibition and the tour, visit here.

Admission charges for the Fort York Visitor Centre exhibition are: $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for youth/children (taxes included). Groups of 20 or more receive a 20% discount. Special school bookings are also available, as well as hotel and restaurant ticket packages. For more info on Toronto's exhibition and to purchase tickets in advance, click here.

Funding for the Toronto exhibition has been provided by Tourism Toronto, the Province of Ontario through Celebrate Ontario, the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund and the Tourism Event Marketing Partnership.
