Emergency Closing of James A. Gifford Causeway Closing at 7 p.m. On Friday For Emergency Repairs

Peterborough County has issued an emergency closing of the James A. Gifford Causeway to all traffic beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday for urgent unforeseen repairs.

This must be completed immediately to avoid a significant safety risk to the travelling public according to the County.

Crews are working extended hours to rectify the situation with expected reopening for next Friday.

Detours will be in place during the unexpected construction and repairs. 

“Peterborough County realizes that this unexpected situation is disruptive and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause,” as stated in a press release.

Peterborough Butterfly Run Temporary Road Closure on April 30

A temporary road closure will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 30 for the Peterborough Butterfly Run.

Streets with temporary closures include:

-  Engleburn Avenue from the south side of Charles Street to the north side of Maria Street

- Birdsall Street from the south side of Charles Street to the north side of Maria Street

Streets will be made available for local traffic. Be advised that runners will be coming through this area between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. the day of the event.

The Peterborough Butterfly Run supports families and individuals who have experienced a loss during pregnancy, the loss of a child or are unable to conceive. To find out more about the event and/or support, visit the website.

Road Closures In Place For St. Patrick's Day Parade On Sunday Afternoon

Downtown road closures are in place for Sunday’s 20th St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Peterborough beginning at 12:30 p.m. announced by the City.

The following road are being closed for the parade:

  • London Street between Aylmer Street and Water Street

  • McDonnel Street between Aylmer Street and Water Street

  • Murray Street between Aylmer Street and Water Street

  • George Street from Parkhill Road West (south side of intersection) to Brock Street

A flag-raising event with the Peterborough Irish Canadian Club is being held at City Hall at 1 p.m. with the parade to follow at 2 p.m. It travels south on George Street at McDonnel Street. A rolling road closure will be in place along George Street from Brock Street to McGill Street during the parade and run. All road closures are expected to be over by 4 p.m according to the City.

No Parking signs will be posted along George Street prior to the parade. Parking in municipal lots and parking garages is free on weekends. The following is a recommended list of parking places:

  • King Street Parkade at 202 King St.

  • Simcoe Street parking garage at 190 Simcoe St.

  • Chambers Lot at 184 Hunter St.

  • Reid Lot at 350 Reid St.

  • Surface lot at 365 Aylmer St.

  • Rehill Lot at 210 Wolfe St.

  • Del Crary Lot at 100 George St. N.

  • Downie Lot at 336 Downie St.

The following transit routes will have detours in place during the closure period:

  • Route 2 Chemong

  • Route 4 Weller

  • Route 6 Sherbrooke

  • Route 7 Lansdowne

  • Community Bus 22 (Blue)

  • Community Bus 23 (Red)

Hunter Street East Closed for Construction From Nov. 7-11

Hunter Street East between Rogers and Burnham Street is closing from Nov. 7 to 11 for sanitary and water main installation services announced on Friday.

The sidewalk on the south side of Hunter Street East between Mark Street and Rogers Street is closing. Pedestrian access is available on the north sidewalk on Hunter Street. Access to the Rotary Greenway Trail is available during the construction period.

Traffic will be detoured along the following routes:

  • Eastbound traffic will travel south on Burnham Street, east on Maria Street and north on Rogers Street

  • Westbound traffic will travel south on Rogers Street, west on Maria Street and north on Burnham Street

Local access to businesses and residences in the construction area will be maintained.

Several Road Closures to Occur During Dragon Boat Festival This Saturday

For the public’s safety, the City of Peterborough has closed several roads at the request of the Peterborough’s Dragon Boat Festival committee with races beginning on Saturday.

Roads such as Crescent Street from George Street to Winch Street from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. are closed on race day.

The streets affected are:

  • Perry Street from the east side of George St. to the west side of Crescent Street.

  • Lake Street from the east side of George St. to the west side of Crescent Street.

  • Lock Street from the north side of Romaine St. to the south side of Crescent Street.

  • Romaine Street from the east side of Lock St. to the west side of Crescent Street.

  • Crescent Street. from the south side of Perry St. to the west side of Winch Street.

  • Rink Street from the east side of George St at the Crary Park Marina entrance.

Eeveryone is welcome to attend Festival at Del Crary Park to spectate and cheer for the participants.

The following is the event schedule for the this year’s races:

  • 8:00 AM - Awakening the Dragon/Opening Ceremonies

  • 9:00 AM - First Race Heats begin

  • 9:00 AM - Vendors Village Market opens with over 40 vendors brought to us from Modern Makers Market including food vendors

  • 9:30 AM - Family Fun Zone opens offering activities and crafts to keep all entertained

  • 10:40 AM - Mackenzie Cup Race followed by the Flower Ceremony

  • 11:00 AM - The Thirsty Dragon Beer Garden opens

  • 12:10 PM - Second Race Heats begin

  • 2:00 PM - Divisional Finals begin

  • 3:15 PM - Awards Ceremony - Race Trophies/Top Individual Fundraisers - At the bleachers

  • 4:00 PM – Raffle draw at the tent near the bleachers
