Writer and journalist Jeanne Pengelly has done a great thing that has inspired others. Blue Rodeo is playing at the Peterborough Memorial Centre tonight (August 8th) for Trent University's 50th anniversary celebrations, but there is no parking available at PMC since the Peterborough Exhibition is on at the same time at Morrow Park. So Pengelly is auctioning her driveway on Morrow St. near PMC to someone who wants to park close. And all the money is going to charity...
Continuing to auction my driveway for tonight's Blue Rodeo concert - pkg will be @ a premium. $ raised goes to @5CountiesKids thru @KruzFM

Want to park close to Mem @PtboMemCentre for @BlueRodeo tnt? Auctioning pkg 1 block away - $ 2 @5CountiesKids. PM me or @petedalliday Pls RT

And Pengelly doing this has inspired others to pick a charity and do the same. Like a person on McGill St. who did this...
The term “investment property” has always been enticing. The thought of someone else paying down a mortgage for you and then selling for a nifty profit is almost too good to pass up.
As a Real Estate Agent with Bowes and Cocks, Patrick McAuley knows all too well that for every peak there is a valley, and suggests that potential buyers consider everything before making a final decision.
Let’s change things up and look at the disadvantages of a rental property first!
1. It might be tough to finance the purchase. If the rental property is your 2nd property, then you will need to pony up a down payment of AT LEAST 20% of the purchase price. Most people will need to take a mortgage out on a property, and the initial expenses could be quite high and unexpected.
2. As the owner, you take on the responsibilities and challenges of being a landlord. Unless you can afford to pay a property management company to take on this job for you, you could encounter a few headaches. Rental units will always need repairs to be made, along with clean ups between tenants. Dealing with tenants can also be tricky—especially when it comes to receiving rent payments.
3. It could be difficult and costly to sell the property later. It can take time to sell a property, no matter how nice it is, and the unseen costs of keeping up a 2nd property with tenants potentially leaving while the house is listed can add up quickly!
1. You gain an additional monthly income. Assuming the home is rented to its potential, the money coming in for rent is generally more than the cost to run the house. Other forms of investment can be less predictable in pay outs.
2. You pay less overall tax. You can deduct certain expenses from your income—reducing the taxes you owe. The list includes:
•Mortgage interest
•Property taxes
•Insurance
•Maintenance/upgrades
•Property management
•Utility bills (if they are included in the rental agreement)
3. You may be able to deduct losses for tax purposes. If expenses exceed your rental income, you may be able to deduct that loss from any other sources of income you have. This could reduce your total tax bill.
With all of this info to consider, Patrick suggests doing your homework before making any hasty decisions. Accountants, lawyers, mortgage brokers, or other financial experts can help shed some light on a subject most people aren’t entirely educated in!
If you are considering entering the rental property market, Patrick invites you to contact him and ask as many questions as you need. He understands the importance that this decision can play in people’s lives and would be happy to steer you in the right direction!

Enchanted April by Matthew Barber—adapted from the novel by Elizabeth Von Arnim—is brought to life on the stage of the Peterborough Theatre Guild under the direction of Judi Wilson. Set in 1922 in both England and Italy, it follows the story of two women who dream of vacationing in a castle in Italy after discovering an ad in the newspaper—with the cost being quite dear at that time of £60 for a one month stay. So with that, Lotty (Julia Johnston) and Rose (Sheila Charleton) place an ad of their own to find two additional ladies to accompany them on their journey to help share in the cost. Two vastly different women respond to the ad and Lady Caroline Bramble (Emily McFarland) and Mrs. Graves (Jennie Ryan) share the castle with Lotty and Rose, both who are eager to escape their husbands and take in the flowers and sunshine the Italian coast promises to offer. During their stay, the ladies all discover something new about themselves and blossom in ways that they didn't expect and that take them by surprise.
The production also stars Ray Ulbikas, Kenn Gibb, David Adams and Maria DeCiccio.
The show runs this Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. It continues next week from Wednesday to Saturday at 8 p.m. with the finale a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, August 17th.
Tickets are available by calling the box office at 705.745.4211.

Travis Little was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident last Friday (August 1st) after being struck by another vehicle on Lakefield Road.
Little was traveling home to Peterborough from work in Lakefield— planning a weekend of camping with his family—when the accident occured. Little was struck by another vehicle and pinned under a car, then airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He underwent a nine hour surgery to reconstruct his left leg, hip and pelvis.
He now has a long road to recovery, and his Aunt Nancy has set up an online fundraising campaign for Travis and his family while they assist him with his recover. Her goal is to raise $10,000 for them, and so far about $1,150 has been raised. You can add to that amount here.

From as far back as my early teens in the mid-90s, people from friends and family to strangers on the street have told me I have a resemblance to Adam Sandler. This timeline works because it was around this time when Sandler was a big star on SNL and was branching off onto the big screen. From looks to personality, apparently we have a lot of similarities. Recently, my daughter—who isn’t quite 4 yet—was watching Sesame Street. The day’s guest was Adam Sandler, who has always been one of my favourites. When she saw him on the screen, she immediately told my wife that he looked like me. This further cemented the opinion, and I’m good with that!
Here are 9 distinct similarities I have with Mr. Sandler...
1. People assume that I’m hilarious. I’m slightly humorous. More situational comedy and quick wit than straight up joke telling! A Sandler strength.
2. He always gets the attractive girl! From Kate Beckinsale and Salma Hayek to Jennifer Anniston and my personal favourite Drew Barrymore, he is always with someone who is a league above—like I am with my wife.
3. We both love our grandmas!
4. Neither of us is particularly good at hockey. Golf on the other hand? Pure Champions!
5. We are both inexplicably loud at times.
6. Snappy dresser: check
7. Black sunglasses: check
8. Baseball hat: check
9. Overall good looks: double check

Local illustrator Jason Wilkins has scored a sweet gig for a Kraft Dinner social media campaign. As he tells us, "I got an email from Scott, a producer at Anomaly, the creative ad agency for Kraft Foods. His creative team thought my illustrative approach to caricature would be perfect for Kraft Dinner's upcoming Facebook campaign. Throughout the month of August, fans will post pictures of themselves enjoying Kraft Dinner in creative ways. I'll then draw caricature versions of the winning entries which will be posted to Kraft's Facebook page. Being a longtime fan of KD, it's just awesome to be teaming up with them to create something their nearly half a million Facebook followers will enjoy!"
