DBIA Featured Post: Laurie Jones and Company Hair Designers
/When you work in the service industry and your business has been operating for over a quarter century in the same location, you know that you’ve been doing something right! That is exactly how Laurie Jones of Laurie Jones and Company Hair Designers feels.
Located at 165 Sherbrooke St Unit 2 across from Larry Electric, Laurie established her business in its current location in 1986 and has never looked back. The shop has a staff of four very dedicated women (Marilyn Huggins, Charmaine O’Brien, Laurie "Parker" Roberts and Laurie Jones herself) who are all born and raised Peterborough girls!
They all have many years of experience in the business and enjoy coming to work in downtown Peterborough each and every day that the shop is open. Being a smaller venue, the ladies have built up a large clientele through their connections with family and in our community.
They’ve known all along that with great service and results come word of mouth sales for them, which is why they have excelled at what they do for so long. Laurie Jones and Company is a salon that focuses on people from the neck up! They offer haircuts, colouring jobs, washes, perms and even deal with some facial waxing. They happily cater to both men and women, from seniors to children experiencing their first haircuts.
On site, they use and sell some large name professional products such as Redken, L’Oreal and Schwarzkopf to name a few. As mentioned, all the women love what they do, and they are happy to have stayed in their smaller location downtown. For them and their customers alike, it offers convenience in its placement, and a great atmosphere on the block they’re on and towards the downtown core which is all within walking distance.
With 27 years experience as a shop, the ladies have seen a lot of change around them. They’re happy to be a constant in the community and invite you to book a time for your next hair appointment.
Their hours are as follows:
Tuesday and Thursday: 9:00am-7:00pm
Wednesday and Friday: 9:00am-5:00pm
Saturday: 9:00am-1:00pm

Fall In Love With An Adorable Peterborough Cat Named Party King
/Meet Party King. She makes great faces and has a terrific personality, but wasn't always the life of the party. As Party King's owner Kristen Mommertz tells us, "We adopted Party King a little over a year ago from a friend who wasn't doing very well and was moving out of province. He had named her Party King and the name stuck—we call her PK or Peas for short. She used to be afraid of everything—including her own shadow—but through many months of patience and love, she is now the perfect lap cat with a huge personality. I'm so thankful that she's a part of our home; she has a lot of love to give and I think she's pretty darn happy." We agree. Take a look at these pics of PK...

Column No. 2: Dating In The City With Match Me Peterborough's Rebecca Cooper
/COLUMN 2 TOPIC: Tips on how to successfully date when using a Matchmaker
Anyone can hire a matchmaker, but if you want the most bang for your buck, then make sure you are putting in the effort on your end as well. Here are eight great tips on how to successfully date when using a Matchmaker:
1. Be emotionally ready to meet someone new: It’s important to take the time after a split to heal from any pain before moving forward. There is a huge difference when it comes to wanting to date, and being ready to date. So before you consider joining any type of service, you should ask yourself, “Are you ready to date again?”
2. It’s important to be realistic when looking for a compatible match. If you have been actively on the market for more than two years and have not had even one second date, then you need to re-evaluate your expectations.
3. Take a good look at your outer shell. Looks matter: YOU are the first thing people see when they meet you so make sure you are representing yourself the way you want to be perceived.
4. Tell the world you are ready to start dating. Allowing your family and friends to know you're single really sets the stance, and they’ll keep their eyes and ears opened for you when hearing about single friends and colleagues. Keep the way you go about meeting singles confidential, it’s only your business.
5. It’s important to imagine yourself dating. Start to think about meeting new people and finding love.
6. Keep a positive attitude! If you start thinking that you will never meet this person, then you are setting the mood for failure.
7. Patience is a virtue…. What is the rush anyway?
8. Be open to dating advice. Having a dating expert with you and assisting you in the process gives you an opportunity to learn and grow. Take advantage of this!

Greater Peterborough's #VitalSignsPTBO 2013 Report Is Out & Shows Our Sense Of Community Belonging Is Off The Charts
/The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough (CFGP) has released their first Vital Signs report on the community. It captures a snapshot of our community that measures its vitality—needs, strengths, and trends—and supports action on issues that are critical to our quality of life here. CFGP is one of 26 community foundations across Canada participating in this important initiative. Among the findings, the report reveals that our sense of community belonging is much higher than the rest of Ontario (see chart below). It also reveals areas of improvement needed—for example, 10 in 100 people here live in poverty. We've captured some screen grabs from the report below, but you can read—and share—the entire report here. And keep the discussion going on Twitter and Facebook at hashtag #VitalSignsPTBO.
