Community Care Grandparent of the Year Submission Deadline Extended

Community Care Peterborough has extended the deadline for ‘Grandparents of the Year’ submissions to May 9, encouraging children from Grades 2 through 6 to recognize a grandparent, elder or a special older person in their life as ‘Grandparent of the Year.’

For the past 35 years, Community Care says they are amazed by the scope of stories/nominations they receive annually. Many of the honourees are indeed grandparents or great grandparents of the students; however, there have been a number of entries that highlight a special senior friend or an Elder who has shared their knowledge with the child.

Students are instructed to submit both a hand-drawn picture of themselves with their nominee as well as a piece of writing that answers some of the following questions:

  • What is important about your relationship with your Grandparent, Elder or special older person?

  • What kinds of activities do you enjoy together?

  • What kind of knowledge have they shared with you?

  • Describe a happy occasion you shared together.

  • How does your nominee make your feel when you are together?

  • Why are you proud of your Grandparent, Elder, or special older person?

  • Why do you think they should win this award?

Optionally, students can submit a recorded video of them reading their story. This is not required, and will not affect judging.
Entries in both English and French are selected.

A committee will select one winner and one honourable mention from each group of grades; primary and junior. Primary is Grades 2 & 3. Junior is Grades 4, 5 & 6.

Eight Awards Will Be Presented to Children:

• Certificates for all participants

• One winner for primary level, grade 2 and 3, in each English and French categories

• One winner for junior level, grades 4, 5, and 6, in each English and French categories

• Honourable Mentions selected in each category

8 Awards Will Be presented to the nominated Grandparents.

Parents and/or guardians can submit their children’s entries online or use a downloadable entry form and mail/drop off them at Community Care Peterborough (185 Hunter St. E.).

City of Peterborough Official Plan Approved By the Province

The City of Peterborough was notified on April 11 that the Province has approved the City’s new Official Plan with amendments; in effect as of April 11.

The Plan identifies where various land uses can be located, such as residential, commercial, institutional, employment and open space, plans for the city’s infrastructure needs, identifies and protects the City’s natural heritage system and water resources, and establishes a vision and policies for growing as a complete, vibrant, sustainable, resilient and equitable city. The new Official Plan also provides a framework for future zoning by-law regulations.

It replaces the City’s current Official Plan as well as two former township Official Plans that have remained in effect in areas annexed between 1998 and 2013.

“The Official Plan is our overarching document to guide growth and development. Our community participated in its drafting to ensure it reflects our collective goals and vision. Growth, investment, employment lands, homes, heritage, and sustainability are all part of the Official Plan,” said Mayor Jeff. “Congratulations to our community, our team at the City of Peterborough, and to the previous Councils that led the creation of this exciting plan.”

The new Official Plan was endorsed by City Council in November 2021 after extensive community consultation and work with various stakeholder groups to draft the document that sets the vision and direction for growth and development for Peterborough to the year 2051. It was submitted to the Province for approval.

“This is an exciting milestone after several years of work to craft the Official Plan with input from residents, developers and community groups. Our Official Plan serves as a foundation for growth and investment in our community. With the Plan amended and approved by the Province, people looking to invest in Peterborough have certainty on the planning direction for the City,” said Councillor Lesley Parnell, chair of Council’s Planning Portfolio.

A draft of the new Official Plan was initially released in June 2019 after more than two years of consultation and activity on drafting the document.

The Province explained in its approval that it made amendments to address provincial policy direction related to growth management, housing supply, cultural heritage resources, land use compatibility and the protection of natural heritage features and drinking water.

The Province’s approval is posted online here.

Peterborough’s own critically acclaimed blues trio, Jackson Delta returns to the Market Hall for what has been an interrupted annual reunion. It’s been a tough couple of years for musicians although Jackson Delta were lucky to have performed a handful of outdoor shows this past two summers.

The trio have performed all over North America from Memphis to Inuvik from Vancouver to Halifax. They have played countless Folk, Jazz and Blues Festivals plus radio and television and they still enjoy a dedicated fan base from across the years.

These days all members are involved in their own personal projects but always enjoy getting together and making their style of Blues that is upbeat and positive.
