Photos: Hundreds Honouring Former Mayor Jack "Lefty" Doris At His Funeral At Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains

Former Peterborough Mayor Jack “Lefty” Doris was honoured at his funeral as the pews at Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains were filled to pay respects on Friday morning.

Doris passed away on March 5 at 91 announced by the City of Peterborough’s Twitter the next day.

Mayor Jeff Leal, several Councillors, friends and family were in attendance for the service with the former giving a eulogy for Doris’s accomplishments and joyful personality.

The recently deceased spent the past 45 years on council which included 14 terms as a city councillor and two mayoral terms. In 1967, he was first elected to city council and was an alderman until 1991 when he became mayor. He worked at General Electric prior to his mayor tenure.

The former mayor received a key to the city in September 2014 during his retirement ceremony when he was 83 years old.

Doris worked as a board member of the Peterborough Police service from 1987-97. He also was also a member of the building committee for their headquarters in the late 1960s.

St. Peter's Secondary School Celebrating Its 100 Anniversary This Year

St. Peter's is celebrating its 100th anniversary in Peterborough this year—the school opened its door at its original location on September 2, 1913 with 59 students. The official anniversary weekend takes place this year on Thanksgiving, October 11th and 12th. Watch the video below from a history buff who happened to find some abandoned photographs from St. Peter's taken in 1916 and 1920 that will be used as part of the celebrations.
