And the OPP are closely monitoring the situation to keep the animal safe, with the moose last spotted heading east on the 5th line. Alex Bushell tweeted these photos below of the "pursuit"... CIty Issues Alert On Blowing Recycling Boxes & Recyclables

From a City of Peterborough alert today...

Blowing Recyclables
High winds are forecast to continue throughout today and tomorrow. Residents who have collection on Wednesday are asked to please hold onto your blue boxes until Wednesday morning, rather than setting them out the night before. This will help to reduce blowing recyclables and blue boxes.
Try not to over-fill blue boxes, and place paper and flattened cardboard sideways in your "Fiber and Plastic Film" box, rather than piling upwards. Do your best to place lighter materials in a secure spot (e.g. put clear plastic trays underneath heavier steel and glass containers).
Residents are encouraged to write their address on their blue boxes, so they can be identified and returned if they should blow away from your property. Lost blue boxes cannot be replaced for free.
For more details, please call the City of Peterborough Waste Management Division at 705- 742-7777, extension 1657.

Alex Brunton Is A Free Man: Is The System Broken?

Child pornographer Alex Brunton is a free man.

The 66-year-old former Peterborough hockey volunteer has been given a suspended sentence with time already served for a slew of child porn charges—including videos police found that Brunton had secretly filmed of naked teenage hockey boys in a Peterborough arena dressing room and shower.

Brunton, who had been in custody since last May for making, possessing and distributing child pornography, was released upon sentencing Tuesday (March 11th)—leaving court in Toronto a smiling man, and returning to his Peterborough home with his wife, who has chosen to stick by his side. He received three years probation.

"Hopefully Mr. Brunton can gradually start regaining the trust of his family—they're going to support him—and hopefully the trust of his community," defence lawyer Alison Mackay said outside the Old City Hall courthouse. (The trust of his community, huh?)

In addition to his three years probation, Brunton is ordered to stay away from places where children under 16 can reasonably be expected to be, unless accompanied by his wife or another adult designated by his wife. He is also prohibited from "knowingly placing himself in a position of trust" with children under 16 and prohibited from using the internet to contact or communicate with children.

Also, Brunton's name will be added to the Sex Offender Registry for life.

But the punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime here. What are your thoughts? Is the system broken? Is this enough? Weigh in below, on our Facebook page or tweet us.

A Customer Service Centre Is Considering Locating In Downtown Peterborough

$_20.JPG

You might have noticed an ad circulating for Trigone in Peterborough. Trigone is a recruiting agency for a company that is looking to possibly locate its customer service centre in Downtown Peterborough. As well, it's listed on the City of Peterborough website, with a link to where you can apply for positions.

The GPA EDC (Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation) confirms to us in a statement that a customer service centre is indeed testing the waters here.

"Our business development team has been working with a customer service centre to locate in downtown Peterborough," the GPA EDC says in a release to PTBOCanada. "The company is a leading Canadian company in the technology sector. These customer service roles will offer wages above average, great benefits and excellent career opportunities. At this point, we are unable to provide more specific details about the customer service centre. We’re looking forward to making a major announcement with all the details in the near future. This will be a good news story for Peterborough."

Indeed it would.

The roads were treacherous Saturday in Peterborough due to icy conditions, and one woman is lucky to be alive after her slid off Water Street and into the Otonabee River.

Her car went off the road on Water St., hit a hydrant and ended up on the icy river.

Emergency crews were called to the scene and found the vehicle in a precarious position on the ice.

Fire Captain Wesley Lake says the woman is a bit shaken up but otherwise OK.

Multiple police, ambulance and fire trucks were on scene, and traffic was stopped during the rescue.
