Fleming College students will officially participate in Shinerama for the first time on Saturday, September 7th. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, students from the Sutherland Campus will be canvassing at FreshCo on Lansdowne Street while Frost students will be at the Loblaws in Lindsay.

About 100 students from both campuses are expected to participate in collecting donations for Shinerama. Canvassers are encouraged to shine shoes, wash cars and even buff hockey skates—anything fun that can raise money in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

All funds collected at Shinerama go to support finding a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF), which is a fatal genetic disease affecting children and young adults. There is no cure for CF, which primarily affects the lungs and digestive system.

According to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Shinerama is the largest postsecondary fundraiser in Canada. In 2012, Shinerama raised $1,035,000. Shinerama has raised more than $21.5 million since it first started more than 45 years ago.

Peterborough County OPP Rescue Oshawa Family Whose Car Battery Died While Checking Out Bears At Dump

From a Peterborough County OPP release today...

OPP3.jpg

On August 7th, 2013 at approximately 11:30pm, Peterborough County OPP officers were dispatched to the Trent Lakes Township municipal dump on Crystal Lake Road for a broken down motor vehicle. An Oshawa family had driven to the dump to observe bears roaming around the municipal waste site searching for food.  When the family decided to leave, they realized that the battery to their van was dead. Further observations revealed that several bears were now standing around the perimeter of their van looking at them.

A cell phone call was placed to the OPP and officers accompanied a tow truck to the scene to stand by while the van’s battery was boosted. The family departed the scene without incident.

The public is reminded that although black bears are interesting to observe, they are large, powerful animals and extreme caution should always be used while in bear country.

Media release via Loomex Communications & Consulting...

At approximately 2:30 p.m. today the Peterborough Airport staff became aware of an aircraft in distress and the Airport emergency plan was activated.  The pilot of the Searey Amphibious plane radioed the airport to ask for assistance with a landing gear malfunction as only one of his front wheels were down.

Peterborough Fire Service and Peterborough EMS were on-site within approximately 10 minutes.

Airport staff were in constant contact with the pilot as he circled the airport for approximately an hour to burn fuel. A flight trainer and the airplane’s manufacturer were contacted to assist the pilot. An emergency landing plan was developed, based on the protocols in the airport emergency plan, and was communicated to the pilot.

At approximately 3:55 p.m. the pilot was able to successfully land the aircraft in the grass adjacent to the runway.  There was minimal damage to the aircraft and the pilot sustained no injuries.

The Peterborough Airport’s Emergency Plan is updated and tested on an annual basis to ensure that staff are prepared for incidents such as this. This incident was handled with care and professionalism with the safety of the pilot as the primary concern.

Sign Of The Times? Scavenging From City Blue Boxes Has Reached All-Time High

From a city release today...
Screen shot 2013-07-05 at 1.25.51 PM.png

Scavenging from City blue boxes has reached an all-time high. In particular, unauthorized individuals are removing aluminum cans from blue boxes. Homeowners and scavengers should be aware that once material is set out to the boulevard, it becomes the property of the City.

To counteract scavenging, the City will more rigorously enforce section 594.2.9 of the Garbage Collection By-law which prohibits scavenging.

Revenue from the sale of aluminium that the City collects from blue boxes helps to keep our recycling programs affordable.  Homeowners are asked to hold their blue boxes until the morning of their collection and discourage unauthorized individuals from removing their contents.

Please contact the City’s Waste Management Davison at 705-742-7777 Ext. 1657 if you have any questions or concerns.

This information is also available on the City of Peterborough website at www.peterborough.ca
