Jake's Officially Closing Its Doors After 25 Years in Business

The Jake's staff (owner Kevin Ross is pictured centre front row) gather for a final goodbye

After 25 years, Jake's Neighbourhood Grill on Lansdowne St. W. is no more. The restaurant has been for sale since last August but hasn't found a buyer, and last night owner Kevin Ross gathered his staff together after work to tell them Jake's is officially shutting down. Above is the farewell picture of the amazing staff taken shortly after Ross made the announcement.

Jake's—and Ross—have become an institution in Peterborough, and it's very difficult for the staff, its patrons and the community to say goodbye. Some of the staff had been with Ross since the very beginning. "It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed," Ross says, taking a quote from Theodore Roosevelt.

Ross has changed his sign to say "Thank You Peterborough". We say "Thank You Jake's".

Spotlight: DAVIDsTEA at Lansdowne Place

Located at the top of the escalator at Lansdowne PlaceWhen I heard that Peterborough was getting a DAVIDsTEA, I was ecstatic. Although we have lovely little local tea shops such as the Teeny Tiny Tea Room and The Magic Rolling Pin in town, the nearest shop that offers a huge selection of loose-leaf tea is an hour and a half away.

I showed up when DAVIDsTEA opened their doors last Saturday (June 5th) at Lansdowne Place to buy some Kinrin Matcha, as I was almost running out. Although it is fairly expensive, it is far and wide the best tasting of the Matchas.

The friendly staff at DAVIDsTEA offered me a sample of the tea of the day and let me take in the aroma of any of their teas on display.

They had plenty of tea accessories for sale as well—travel mugs (with integrated tea press), kettles, mugs, glasses and natural sweeteners such as honey and agave nectar. You can purchase single teas, 50g bags or 100g tins. You also get a discount off your next purchase if you bring your tin(s) back in.

I’m sure to be a frequent visitor, especially when I’m in need of my favorite fix. Earl Grey. Hot.

Evan Holt
