SPARK Photo Festival Winners Announced
/The winners of the 2021 Themed Juried Exhibit at the SPARK Photo Festival were revealed on Wednesday.
The 2021 Juried Exhibit Theme was Nourish: To Eat, To Drink, To Enjoy.
Best in Show was awarded to Fine Art Pear by Melissa Maahs.

This year there were two double-winning photographers who will take home a cash prize.
From the top 25 images selected by the jury, the Best in Show is Fine Art Pear by Melissa Maahs, Second Place is Hots by Laura Berman, Third Place is Fall Harvest by Melissa Maahs of Courtice and Honourable Mention is Crunch by Laura Berman of Castleton.

SPARK Photo Festival Opens September 1
/The SPARK Photo Festival opens this Wednesday and runs through September 30 in more than twenty venues throughout Peterborough City and County, and in Fenelon Falls, Lindsay and Northumberland County.

There are over 25 exhibits showing the works of over 100 photographers, some returning photographers who have participated in every SPARK festival as well as several first-time exhibitors.
“We’re delighted to see the enthusiasm and excitement of the exhibiting photographers who have persevered through delays and uncertainty since our April 2020 Festival was postponed due to COVID-19”, said Festival Director Jennifer MacKenzie.
The prize-winning images for the 2021 Themed Juried Exhibit Nourish: To Eat, To Drink, To Enjoy will be announced on opening night.
Tune in to social media at 8:30 p.m. on September 1 for the reveal of the top four entries as selected by a jury from the submissions by photographers from across Ontario. The Nourish exhibit will be displayed outdoors on George Street, south of Venture North.

Kawartha Craft Beer Festival Goes Virtual This Year
/The 2020 edition of Kawartha Craft Beer Festival will be virtual, and will feature the best of Ontario craft beers, delicious local food, and live entertainment.
In partnership with Electric City Works, the Festival developed an alternate way to bring the event to the community during these uncertain times. Their online store launched June 1st, and allows guest to browse beer and cider options and choose mixed packs that suit their beer style preferences. The mixed packs will feature beer and cider exclusively from our 2020 Beer Fest vendors and include many selections that are available only at the breweries. Local restaurants are providing delicious food options to pair well with any craft beer.
To top it all off, the virtual event will showcase two live shows that can be streamed from the Festival Facebook page. These shows feature Buck Twenty, a band who were recently a 2020 International Songwriter Competition Finalist and whose trademark sound is bursting with harmonies, catchy hooks, as well as the surplus of positive energy they bring to the stage. Buck Twenty’s show will go live on Friday, June 19th from 7:00-8:30 pm.
The second performance features Practically Hip, Canada’s No. 1 Tragically Hip Tribute band for over 20 years. Join the band in its celebration of all things Tragically Hip at their live show streaming Saturday, June 20th from 7:00-8:30 pm.
“We are thrilled that we’re able to continue with the Festival this year”, says Kim Cranfield, Director, Kawartha Craft Beer Festival. “We’ve had incredible support from the community over the years and we’re just so happy to support the local breweries, restaurants and musicians, and hope we can bring together craft beer lovers this Fathers Day Weekend."
Online ordering is now open and orders will be ready for pickup Friday, June 19th from 12:00-5:00 pm and Saturday, June 20th from 12:00-5:00 pm at Electric City Works (200 Charlotte Street, Peterborough). Guests can now also have their orders delivered for a small fee through a partnership with Y Drive Ptbo, to help share the Festival with even more craft beer fans.

Kathleen Edwards, Matt Mays, Fred Penner, Paper Shakers & More Playing 2019 Peterborough Folk Festival
/The Peterborough Folk Festival, which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, has announced Kathleen Edwards and Matt Mays will headline the festival on Sunday, August 18th at Nicholls Oval Park on the Peterborough Subaru Stage.

The festival is excited to announce its 2019 Emerging Artist Award recipients Paper Shakers. The local group first performed at the 2017 festival and will be featured at the 2019 festival.
The award will allow the group to attend the Folk Music Ontario conference in the Fall where they will be able to continue to make connections in the music industry with festivals across Canada. Past recipients of the Emerging Artist award include Serena Ryder, James Mckenty , Missy Knott and Beau Dixon .

There will be over 50 artisan and vendors at Nicholls Oval Park, and the weekend performances—there are 20+ artists on four stages—include a Sunday afternoon performance by legendary children’s performer Fred Penner, who will also perform earlier in the day before Kathleen Edwards and Matt Mays.

Juno award winning group A Tribe Called Red. who have performed at major festivals across the globe including Cochella & Osheaga, will be playing Saturday night.

2019 Hootenanny On Hunter Street Lineup Includes Jonny Trash Super Group, Surprise Collective Of Local Musicians
/The 9th Annual Hootenanny returns to Hunter Street August 10th with a diverse, exciting lineup including The Jonny Trash Super Group, a tribute to the late Jonathan Hall who started the festival. Hootenanny runs from noon to 11 p.m. on Hunter Street W. between George and Aylmer streets. Admission is free.

The Jonny Trash Super Group is a surprise collective of various musicians connected with the late Jonathan Hall. Known endearingly by his friends as Johnny Trash, this group will pay tribute to their friend who passed away suddenly earlier this year at the age of 44.
"We were deeply saddened along with the entire community by the sudden passing of Jonathan Hall,” says Terry Guiel, DBIA Executive Director. “Jon started the Hootenanny and organized it for seven years. On August 10th, you’ll see a hugely talented and dynamic performance from The Jonny Trash Super Group.”
"Jonny was all about getting stage time for local artists and bringing in bands from out of town that maybe you hadn't heard before,” says long-time friend Mike Judson. “Moving forward with this event, I think Jonny would love to see a continued effort being put into choosing great local artists to grace the Hunter Street stage. He'd want the organizers to take a chance on something weird and outside of the norm and give people an experience they were not expecting.”

5th Annual Kawartha Craft Beer Festival Takes Place At Del Crary Park This Year
/Smithavens Brewing Company and Publican House Brewery are pleased to announce the 5th Annual Kawartha Craft Beer Festival, and this year it takes place at a new location, Del Crary Park.
The festival is on June 14th and 15th during Ontario Craft Beer Week, and will showcase craft breweries from the Kawarthas and surrounding region allowing visitors to sample a variety of beer flavours and cuisine from local restaurants.
The hours are 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, June 14th and they have extended hours on Saturday, June 15th from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Del Crary Park.
This year will feature 13 breweries and three craft cideries from the surrounding region, including many new vendors. The 5th anniversary event will also showcase local merchandise vendors for guests to explore locally made products while local musicians perform on the Fred Anderson stage at Del Crary. Six local food vendors will showcase a variety of food options to enjoy throughout the weekend.
Tickets are on sale now and are available online through kawarthacraftbeerfestival.com and in-store at both Smithavens Brewing Company (687 Rye St.) and Publican House Brewery (300 Charlotte Street).
Advanced ticket sales end Friday, June 14th at 10 a.m. Each ticket allows entry into the festival, a branded 12oz glass and drink samples.

Bedouin Soundclash, Basia Bulat & The Spades To Play Peterborough Folk Festival
/The Peterborough Folk Festival has announced three of this year's artists for their 29th Annual Festival taking place August 16-19th at Nicholls Oval Park, and it includes the return of a well-known Peterborough rock band.
Bedouin Soundclash
Bedouin Soundclash will headline the festival on Saturday, August 18th, along with The Spades—who reunited for this awesome jam session earlier this year—returning to the stage on the Saturday night for the first time in five years.
On Sunday August 19th, Juno nominated Basia Bulat—shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize—will headline and close out the festival.
