Rotary Club of Peterborough Makes $50,000 Donation to YES Shelter To Expand Housing

To expand housing, The Rotary Club of Peterborough has donated $50,000 to the YES Shelter for Youth and Families in a cheque presentation made on Monday afternoon.

This funding allows YES to open three new permanent spaces in their RISE Youth Housing Program. It facilitates the renovation and maintenance of an existing RISE Youth Housing location according to a press release.

“I am pleased to be presenting this cheque for the YES RISE Youth Housing Program to fund a place and program where youth are supported with skills to transition from homelessness and living in a shelter towards living on their own often finishing high school, a college program or into employment,” said Betty Halman-Plumley, Rotary president.

The $50,000 is part of the Rotary’s $100,000 commitment that was made last year.

“The Rotary Club of Peterborough Kawartha is very pleased to partner with the Peterborough Rotary Club in providing funding for YES’ Rise Youth Housing Program,” said Paul Landau, Peterborough Kawartha Club president. “This program ensures that youth in the community have a safe place to live and also learn strategies to support their recovery.”

Home Instead Owners Donate 100 Portable HEPA Filters to Homes In Need

Glen and Nadine Robson, Home Instead Peterborough owners have gifted 100 SharkNinja portable HEPA to homes in need due to fires around the country that have impacted air quality announced on Wednesday.

Peterborough Housing Corporation, Community Care Peterborough and Thrive Housing and Support (formally Kawartha Participation Projects) are delivering the air purifiers throughout July.

“It was an amazing experience today to give the air purifiers to our clients. I delivered a unit to Edward, who is a 90-year-old client living with congestive heart failure among other health issues,” Raj Shah, Community Care Peterborough client services coordinator.

Jenn Ropertz, director of client services for thrive housing and support, accepted the air purifiers.

“With the increase in poor air quality with fires around the country, air quality often has a big impact on the breathing of our elderly clients with respiratory issues,” she explained. “Because of the generous and compassionate donation, our high-risk clients can breathe a little easier.”

Peterborough Humane Society Receives $50,000 Donation From Miskin Law Towards Animal Care Centre

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) is one step closer to its capital campaign goal as local law firm, Miskin Law, has donated $50,000 towards the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC) announced on Wednesday.

“We are so grateful for our incredible local businesses, like Miskin Law, that go above and beyond to support our organization’s evolving mission to provide more programs and services for animals and people in our community,” said Shawn Morey, PHS executive director.

As a result of the donation, a dedication ceremony of the PACC’s Boardroom recognized Miskin Law, being identified on an outside bench and on the Donor Wall located in the Centre’s lobby.

“We are so happy to be here, with our beloved pets, to celebrate the new facilities. Today, and only today, this room belongs to our dogs,” said Murray Miskin, Miskin Law founder. “We know that the Boardroom will be a great community resource and will help Peterborough Humane Society staff day to day in getting their vital work done.”

“The PACC’s Adoption and Education Centre, including spaces like the Boardroom will allow us to expand our services,” said Morey. “We are able to not only offer more opportunities to our staff but also provide a community space for individuals, local businesses and service groups looking to rent out a space for meetings and functions.”

The Peterborough Humane Society launched its latest stage of the capital campaign known as ‘The Home Stretch’ to raise the final $3 million needed to meet the $13 million goal for the Our Pet Project.

Pet Lovers Give Blood at the Peterborough Humane Society Blood Drive Event

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) has partnered with the Canadian Blood Services Peterborough to host a Pet Lovers Give Blood event on July 13 and 20 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Members of the PHS team will be donating at the Peterborough Donor Centre (55 George St. N) as they call upon the community to do the same.

The QR Code and will direct those to the Pet Lovers Peterborough Team that can also be used to book appointments.

Seasons on Ravenwood Holiday Displays Close Permanently

The Glasbergen’s announced that the public holiday displays on their Ravenwood Drive property are coming to an end, citing the difficulty with navigating “mean spirited complaints” from community members.

“When we started Seasons on Ravenwood it was during a difficult time for most, as we were all navigating through COVID,” the Glasbergen’s outlined in a statement on Facebook. “There was nowhere to visit and we wanted to provide a safe and small place to take little ones. We never dreamed it would become as big and widespread as it did.”

The family goes on to address the comments they’ve received regarding their Pirate Ship and Christmas displays at their home on Ravenwood (1723 Ravenwood Dr.)

“The saying goes “one bad apple spoils the bunch” and I wish it was only one. It is getting harder to navigate through the mean spirited complaints and missions of the individuals who would like to see our “junk yard” displays removed,” the statement continues. “We want to thank all the people who have supported, written and spoke kind words, and who donated hundreds of pounds of food for our local food banks! For that, we are eternally grateful.”

Braden and Jenn Glasbergen continue to stress the importance of supporting local food banks in the community.

4th Line Theatre Seeking Retro Prop Donations For Upcoming Summer Production

Dig out your attic for some relics as 4th Line Theatre is seeking prop donations or loans of items from the 60s for their upcoming production, ‘The Tilco Strike’ which is running from June 27 - July 22.

The Theatre is asking for 1960s items either for loan or donations. These include bowling shoes, bowling pins, a bowling bag, an adding machine, bolo ties, a punch clock and a cardholder.

Volunteers are also needed for the productions. Anyone who signs up can also view any show for free.

Written by D’Arcy Jenish and directed by Cynthia Ashperger, The Tilco Strike recounts the year-long fight between 35 poorly paid women and their hard-nosed male bosses at Tilco Plastics in Peterborough. The company was determined to crush the women and their union according to 4th Line Theatre.

The strike began in December 1965 over a $25 bonus and escalated into an epic battle between organized labour and strike-breaking employers. The women lost their fight but changed labour relations in Ontario forever.

Peterborough Humane Society Receives $10,000 Donation From Docupet

Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) has received a donation of $10,000 from the City of Peterborough’s official pet licensing partner, DocuPet announced on Wednesday.

“This donation will go a long way in supporting the care we provide animals in our community. From reuniting animals, taking in strays and surrenders and everything in between, every dollar counts in the care of these animals.” shared Shawn Morey, PHS executive director.

DocuPet is a pet profile, lost pet and licensing solution business that joined PHS in 2019. This donation came from DocuPet’s Safe&Happy Fund that collects automatic donations through designer license tag purchases as well as direct donations. 

Licensing fees collected annually contribute to the PHS’s daily operational expenses according to a press release.

To mark the occasion, DocuPet is offering $10 off a regularly priced designer tag for all City of Peterborough pet owners with promo code ‘PTBO10.’

Porch Pirates For Good 'Plundering' For Donations For Kawartha Food Share On May 27

‘Porch Pirates for Good’ is returning to scour Peterborough to restock the dwindling shelves at Kawartha Food Share (KFS) for May 27.

Residents can leave a bag of non-perishable food items on their front porch. Starting at 9 a.m., volunteers dressing in pirate attire will drive around the city, collect the items and deliver them to the KFS warehouse.

Money can also be donated on KFS’s website. Every dollar donated allows Kawartha Food Share to leverage more than four dollars of food purchasing power.

The food drive aids families who are unable to afford groceries due to employment-related reasons and the high cost of housing, health and food.

KFS is looking to receive the following donated items:

• Canned tuna

• Pasta and pasta sauce

• Alphaghetti, Kraft Dinner and Chef Boyardee

• Breakfast cereal

• Peanut Butter

• Any non-perishable fruit and vegetable items

• Rice

• Canned soup/stew

• Feminine hygiene products

• Baby formula

• Diapers

Local Podcaster Partners With Imprinted Apparel to Raise $1,200 For Kawartha Food Share

Local community builder and podcaster Ken John Jones teamed up with Imprinted Apparel to raise $1,200 for Kawartha Food Share (KFS) in a cheque presentation on Thursday morning.

The money was raised from merchandise proceeds of Jones’s podcast, “Jonsey’s Corner Podcast” where Imprinted Apparel created the apparel and designed the logo. The printing business matched the funds raised totalling $1,200 for Kawartha Food Share.

“I feel very passionate for what Kawartha Food Share does for our community,” said Jones. “I thought this would be a great opportunity to give back to the community that I call my home.”

Jones started raising the money for a month beginning in early February.

His podcast just reached its one-year anniversary and has featured over 70 guests. They include local athletes, notable community members, artists and other builders.

Jones is a recognized community builder in Peterborough, recognized in March of last year with a certificate. He has volunteered for organizations such as Alternatives Community Program Services and Challenger Baseball.

Local Restaurant Owner Determined to Give Over 1,300 Free Meals On Easter Sunday

The Original Spaghetti House Pizzeria owner Ilir Sino gave out 1,300 meals on Christmas Day last year and he’s aiming to beat that number for Easter Sunday.

His restaurant is giving away pasta and dessert to anyone who needs it on Easter Sunday.

Sino made the announcement on his Facebook last Thursday and is inviting Peterborough and the surrounding area to come grab a meal.

“Sino's family tradition is every Easter Sunday and Christmas Day, we will welcome everyone in need for free a meal and dessert from my family, as long as I'm alive,” said Sino in his Facebook post. “When I'm gone, my children will continue this tradition for our city.”

A full staff will be on hand to help Sino cook and distribute the meals.

Sino has had a history of philanthropy as he donated $1,500 to Alternatives Community Program Services Peterborough last November. He has also donated to local sports teams and other charities.

The Original Spaghetti House Pizzeria is located at 512 George St. S. off the corner of Lansdowne Street.

He opened his own production facility, Sino’s Fine Foods, located at 597 Monaghan Rd. last summer. The business produces his sauces, dressings, soups, oven-ready dinners and more.
