GoFundMe Created to Assist Peterborough Man and His Family After a Motorcycle Accident Leaves Him in Hospital

A GoFundMe has been created to assist local man Chris Lee after a serious motorcycle accident in Peterborough that left him in a hospital at St. Michael’s in Toronto.

He was airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital from the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Thursday and his condition is unknown.

On the fundraiser page, created by Lee’s co-worker Taylor MacMillan, she says the money raised will be put towards any costs associated with his recovery, and to support the everyday expenses that may be affected due to missing work.

Lee, who works in the construction industry, has three children; Payton, Kaden and Oaklyn.

“Chris is an amazing person and he never hesitates to help others in need so hopefully everyone can help return this favour to him and his family,” she says on the page.

Roads Reopened After Incident at SGS Canada Inc.; One Person In Hospital Precautiously

After an industrial accident at SGS Canada Inc. in Lakefield on Thursday morning that resulted in temporary area closures with one hospitalized as a precautionary measure, roads have been reopened as reported by the Peterborough Police Service.

Police were asking anyone to avoid the area of Concession Street, County Road 33, Water Street and Oxford Street in Lakefield for several hours. Motorists were being diverted at Block Road and County Road 28, at River Road and at Nicholls Street in Lakefield.

Hazardous materials technicians were at the site to manage response which is localized to the SGS site according to a press release.

The area has been blocked off as a precaution. Emergency services were called from reports of a concerning smell.

Two-Car Collision Results In Front Window Convenience Store Crash; 52-Year-Old Driver Charged with Failing to Stop at a Red Light

A two-car collision that resulted in a crash into a Circle K on a McDonnel Street and Aylmer Street intersection that occurred around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday as reported by Peterborough Police Service.

The collision resulted in one of the vehicles crashing into the Circle K’s storefront, damaging several windows. No serious injuries were reported during the accident however one person was taken to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre as a precaution.

A 52-year-old driver was charged with failing to stop for a red light as a result of the incident. 

Circle K at 235 McDonnell St. is temporarily closed as a result of the accident as Kawartha Glass cleans up the shards.

Dirt Bike Community Rallies Around Local Family After 8-Year-Old Boy Airlifted To Sick Kids

Nixon Parsons, 8, of Peterborough suffered a bad dirt bike accident at Burnt River Off Road Facility on Saturday.

Community, friends and family are rallying around the Parsons family to see them through this trying time.

According to Kieran Gillooly, family friend and member at Burnt River, Parsons, his brother and dad are regular riders and Burnt River members. His mom and baby sister can often be found cheering on the sidelines.

On Saturday, Parsons was air lifted to sick kids in critical condition, where he has had multiple CT scans and MRI’s. His neurology team is focusing on his brain.

Parsons suffered small contusions on his brain, some swelling and bruising. On Sunday hospital staff started to bring him off his medication. Gillooly says he is moving all limbs, ‘but only flickers in his left hand’.

Doctors and nurses are monitoring brain activity for brain seizures.

He has also suffered a broken nasal cavity, broken orbital bones and has lost many of his teeth.

As of Monday, Parsons has undergone surgery to close gashes around his mouth. That surgery will be followed by stitching in his mouth to help close a hole in his pallet and to try and reattach pieces of his gum. He will also need to undergo facial bone surgery.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Parsons mother let friends and family know that surgery went well.

According to Gillooly, Parsons is still using a breathing tube and is responding to his parents touches with small movements of his body.

“Our entire dirt bike community is feeling the heart ache for Nixon and his family,” said Gillooly in a social media post. “It is a parents worst nightmare come true.”

Parsons’ parents, Jake and Bennica, are by his side constantly, though the hospital only allows one parent from 9 p.m. - 6 a.m. Bennica and Parsons’ 5-month-old sister have been staying in a hotel.

To help lessen the financial strain, Gillooley asks those that are willing and able to send e-transfers directly to Parsons’ mom at bennicabrown@outlook.com. Funds will be automatically deposited and used for hotels, food and to keep up with bills at home.

“Nixon is only eight years old and is battling the biggest race right now and needs everyone’s prayers and to cheer him on,” wrote Gillooly. “He is the toughest kid I have ever met, and his continued forward progress shows just how much of a fighter he is.”

Community Rallies to Create Fundraiser For Dirt Bike Accident Victim

Jake MacDonald may have suffered the worst accident of his life but his community has rallied together and arranged a fundraiser for his recovery on Tuesday.

The Facebook group “Let’s Help Jake MacDonald” has already raised approximately more than $1,500 with over 280 members in the group. All proceeds go towards MacDonald for any incidentals that the accident cost and to help him get back on his feet during the recovery.

Crissie and Josh Morrow, close friends and next-door neighbours created the fundraiser two days after the accident had occurred on Sunday.

“I bawled my eyes out. I couldn’t believe it,” said Crissie. “I felt like I needed to do something and I didn’t know what to do so I got talking to a bunch of my girlfriends, we talked about it and we ran from there.”

Several local businesses have donated goods for a charity auction that will take place next Friday with details to follow. Items such as gift cards, a television, purses and cups are some of the many prizes that will be auctioned.

“The response from people and a lot of local businesses in Havelock, Madoc, Marmora and other places have been phenomenal,” said Crissie. “Over 50 different items have been donated for the auction we’re having next week.”

The 22-year old crashed face-first resulting in brain hemorrhaging and a fractured left foot while dirt biking at Cordova Lake just north of Havelock on Sunday late afternoon.

He was airlifted to Kingston General Hospital and was sedated since the accident. The Havelock resident had a successful overnight craniotomy on Wednesday.

There is no timeline on when MacDonald will make a full recovery but it could be up to a year at least according to Crissie.

“We had a Zoom call with him and his mother last night (Wednesday),” said Crissie, “He’s breathing on his own and has been responsive to touch and the voices from his family.”

MacDonald is a licensed mechanic and was studying to be a diesel mechanic at Centennial College in Scarborough.

He has played minor hockey for Havelock and Norwood and has refereed for the same leagues for the past four years.
