Federal cultural policy and funding programs have an enormous impact on the development and sustainability of the arts in Peterborough, affect the lives of professional working artists in our riding and make a difference in our ability to protect and preserve our heritage assets, says Electric City Culture Council (EC3).

The art community contributes millions of dollars to the local economy and has a significant impact on social well-being, the health and vitality of community members, the downtown and local tourism according to EC3. This is a sector that has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic and is facing a rocky road to recovery.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Artsvote Canada 2021 will be taking place for a very limited, invite-only and fully-vaccinated audience, but will be simultaneously streaming live on EC3’s Facebook and YouTube page.

It will also be broadcast on Trent Radio (92.7 FM) and will be available to watch on Facebook and YouTube following the event.

The cast of Greeting Cards

The cast of Greeting Cards

Written and Directed by Peterborough's Frank Flynn, here's a synopsis of the play:

Robbie O’Grady is a bon vivant and a lady’s man. At least he was until a stroke changed all that. Now he’s struggling to find his footing in a whole new world. Frustrated, flat broke, and unable to work, he’s beginning to test the patience of his best friend/roommate Max, who’s got troubles of his own. Max hasn’t quite come to terms with the feelings he has for his girlfriend Mandy. Falling in love isn’t Max’s style and he wants out. Behind on the rent, Robbie needs help, and fast. Things get complicated when Mandy suggests Max’s little sister Gertie as a therapist for Robbie. Max doesn’t want Robbie anywhere near Gertie. Things don’t go as planned when Max solicits Robbie’s help to break up with Mandy, and Gertie isn’t quite the little girl Robbie remembers from when they were kids.

Love, laughter, and friendship abound in this romantic romp. Sure to touch hearts and funny bones alike.

PTBOCanada Pics & Review: The Irish Rovers At Showplace

It's remarkable how much energy The Irish Rovers, who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary, bring to the crowd. While they aren't retiring, they say they are just slowing down—poking fun at themselves while playing antics on each other on stage and telling funny yarns loaded with Irish humour.

They played Wednesday night (November 25th) to a sold-out crowd at Showplace, and didn't even need to coach the crowd to clap along because they were already taking part. This group of very talented artists really shined and it was great to see some of them switch through multiple instruments during a single song.

Fifty years is pretty remarkable, and their fans have been along with them for the journey. It was nice to see fans bringing original records (no re-presses here!) to be signed after the show.

PTBOCanada Review: Peterborough Theatre Guild Presents "Oliver! The Musical" At Showplace

Jackson Freeman plays the role of Oliver (photo Neil Morton)

Opening night for Oliver! The Musical presented by the Peterborough Theatre Guild took place Friday (May 2nd) in front of a full house at Showplace Peterborough. Directed by Gillian Wilson, with Brian MacDonald as music director, choreography by Melissa Beeby and Peter Sudbury as orchestra conductor, Oliver stars Jackson Freeman as Oliver.

As well, there are a host of other familiar names in Oliver from local theatre productions who you've most likely seen in other plays, including Brian MacDonald, Kate Suhr, Lindsay Unterlander, Chuck Vollmar and Isaac Martin—in addition to so many others that make for a superb cast.

Set in the slums of London in 1837, we follow the story of orphan Oliver Twist. If you're like me and remember the story well—I was part of the chorus in our high school production—you'll find yourself singing along to some of the well-known songs like "I'd Do Anything" and "Consider Yourself".

This fantastic musical continues until May 10th. Tickets are $25/adults, $22/senior, $15/students and can be purchased at the Showplace Box Office.
