Two New Dogs Admitted To Peterborough Police In Badge Ceremony

Two Police Service Dogs (PSD) Mag and Gryphon are the Peterborough Police Service’s newest members of their K9 Unit in a badge ceremony held on Wednesday.

Both dogs received their official badges marking their official first day of work.

Gryphon is a Dutch Shepherd. He completed his 15-week training course with Const. Wentworth run by the Niagara Regional Police Service and is now certified for general-purpose patrol.

The 18-month old dog is trained in human scent detection and location, suspect apprehension, article detection, handler protection, and narcotics detection. 

Mag is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois trained in firearms and ammunition detection. She completed basic training on Oct. 6 has been with the City of Peterborough alongside fellow PSD Isaac and her handler Const. Cowie.  She was donated to the police by Grassroots Kennels.

The Peterborough Police Service’s team just got furrier and cuter with two new dogs joining the K9 unit announced Friday.

Police Service Dog (PSD) Gryphon is an 18-month-old Dutch Shepherd. He just completed his 15-week training course with handler PC Wentworth run by the Niagara Regional Police Service. Gryphon is now certified for general-purpose patrol.

Police Service Dog (PSD) Mag is a Belgian Malinois turning two in February. She is trained in firearms and ammunition detection.

After completing her basic training on Oct. 6, she has been operational in the City of Peterborough alongside PSD Isaac and her handler PC Cowie. She was generously donated to the Peterborough Police Service by Grassroots Kennels.

Peterborough Police Service Dogs Wolfe and Hal Are Retiring, Two New Canines Starting Early 2019

After an amazing run, Peterborough Police Service dogs Wolfe and Hal are retiring in December.

Both Wolfe and Hal, German Shepherds imported from Kentucky, are direct brothers with one year separating them in age. Wolfe was purchased by the Knights of Columbus and donated to the service while Hal was purchased by the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough.

PSD Wolfe, eight-and-a-half years old, has worked alongside his partner Constable Tim Fish for the past seven years, while PSD Hal, seven years old, has worked with his partner Constable Sam McCullum for the past six years.

The Unit is currently in transition as two new Police Service Dogs will begin duty early in 2019.

Two new Canine Officers, Constable Kyle Adey and Constable Bob Cowie, and their Police Service Dogs (each about 15 months old) are currently at a 15 week training course in Niagara Falls.

Following this initial course, the Canine Officers and their Police Service Dogs will undergo regular maintenance training once a month followed by a week-long re-certification course every six months. Constable Adey’s dog was purchased by the Peterborough Police Service while Constable Cowie’s dog was purchased through a donation from a local sponsor.

The Peterborough Police Service is launching a fun contest for local kindergarten students to try and guess the name of Constable Adey’s dog. The class that guesses the name correctly will get a special meet-and-great at their school with PC Adey and his Police Service Dog. Enter the contest here.
