Nominate a Local Business to ‘Beat the Blue Monday’ with Showplace
/The Showplace Performance Centre presents Beat the Blue Monday, bringing free music performances to brighten workplaces across Peterborough on Jan. 16.
Between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the third Monday of the year, various local businesses throughout central Peterborough will have the opportunity to beat the Monday blues with various local talents.
“The third Monday in January is said to be ‘the most depressing day of the year,’ says Showplace in a press release. “The sub-zero temperatures, the lack of daylight, the arrival of our post-Christmas credit card bill. Don’t worry, Showplace is here to help!”
Kate Suhr, Melissa Payne and The Weber Brothers will be visiting nominated businesses on their lunch break to spread some light and cheer in the community through the sharing of art.
To nominate a local business, reach out to Showplace via email and tell them which business could use some cheering up. Remember to include the business name and address.
Visit the Showplace website for more information on Beat the Blue Monday and other event listings.

Melissa Payne Dropped By Extendicare In Lakefield To Play A Song On Her Fiddle For Her Nanny & The Long Term Care Heroes
/Musician Melissa Payne dropped by Lakefield Extendicare on Wednesday (April 15th) after being inviting there to play as part of their community Honk For Our Heroes drive-by parade.
Playing there was extra-special for Melissa as her nanny resides there.
“Truth is I am guilty of not visiting as much as I say I will,” Melissa writes in a heartfelt Instagram post. “Nanny has had dementia for the past six years and the chances of her remembering this experience are very slim to none. But in this moment she was happy and excited and full of joy to see someone playing music for her. If there is one thing this pandemic has taught us it’s to cherish our moments. I know I’m not alone in saying I can’t wait to hug, hold and love a little harder my Nanny and all those I hold dear.”
You can watch Melissa’s “performance” below as she practised physical distancing outside the window while her Nanny watched with great pride from inside…
“Thank you to all the long term care heroes who are working so hard to keep our loved ones safe,” adds Melissa in her social media post.

Melissa Payne’s New Album Darker Than Your Dark Out March 6th
/Ennismore’s Melissa Payne releases her new album, Darker Than Your Dark, on Friday, March 6th.
Produced by Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo), James McKenty (The Spades), and Maia Davies (Ladies of the Canyon), the record explores a new realm from the pages of Payne's songbook. Honest and vulnerable, Darker Than You Dark guides the listener through emotive peaks and valleys that can be at once heartbreaking and cathartic.
Melissa Payne co-wrote many of the songs with the album's three producers—all artists who she has also performed with in the past, and who worked on her sophomore album High and Dry (2014).
Aside from being an in-demand player, her background in old time fiddle and traditional celtic music has evolved into a blossoming solo career. The record comes after nearly a year on the road with Matt Mays, where Payne toured as part of his Dark Promises backing band.
As part of an Eastern Ontario tour she is doing, Melissa will be playing at Market Hall in Peterborough on Saturday, March 7th. Get your tickets here.

New Bandwagon With Melissa Payne & James McKenty Filmed In Camper Van At Folk Festival
/Bandwagon's latest episode features Melissa Payne and James McKenty performing "Shake Me" in a Volkswagen bus at the Peterborough Folk Festival earlier this year.
"Melissa and James have both been featured before by us—James with the Spades, and Mel with Express & Co.—but this is something new and neat," Bandwagon producer Ryan Lalonde tells PTBOCanada.
Also, music personality Ken Elrick was kind enough to let them borrow his famous Patch Bus for the shoot.

Watch: Melissa Payne's Amazing New Music Video "Bring Me Back"
/Peterborough-based songwriter Melissa Payne has a new album out High and Dry, her second full-length album. Payne and her five-piece band play with passion and graceful restraint that speaks to the ebb-and-flow pacing of life, especially the Millennial-age relationships and struggles that inspired much of her writing on the album.
"Bring Me Back", the second single off of High & Dry—which she performed on Episode 4 of PTBOCanada Live With Mike Judson—was produced by Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor and James McKenty from Seventh Fire Records. The song was a natural choice for Melissa and videographer Rob Viscardis to put to film and you'll see why in this excellent video below...
