Evans made a Facebook post announcing his retirement and had the following message:

“Today is the day I’m hanging them up and retiring from the NLL after 18 seasons. My dream as a kid turned into reality 19 years ago. Many memories made and friendships gained throughout my career. Truly grateful for the sport and what it has provided me and my family. My family and my health are most important as I step into my next chapter. Truly blessed by the support of the lacrosse community over the years. Thank you to my family, friends, teammates and fans for all the great memories. Looking forward to continuing to grow the game and the best sport around. #15”

The 37-year-old Peterborough native spent time with the Rochester Knighthawks, Calgary Roughnecks, New England Black Wolves, Buffalo Bandits, the new Rochester Knighthawks (founded in 2019) and the Vancouver Warriors during his NLL career.

In 270 regular-season games, he scored 479 goals and 879 assists for 1,358 points. In his 26 playoff games, he had 50 goals and 68 assists for 118 points. He won an NLL Championship with the Knighthawks in 2007. He was twice named the NLL MVP for 2013 and 2015 with the Roughnecks.

He reached a milestone in January, scoring his 1,300th point in the NLL.

He spent 20 years in the Major Series Lacrosse. As a Peterborough Laker, Evans won the Mann Cup Championship eight times and was a three-time Mann Cup MVP.

The Lakers give a 2-0 record in the Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) league since they defeated the Kodiaks on Sunday.

Thomas Hoggarth led the team with four goals while Peterborough’s Shawn Evans had five points with two goals and three assists.

“It was a great feeling, having our fans there supporting us, especially for the banner raising,” he said, “Being back in this arena, after being a child here and growing up… in this building for so many years, it was something special tonight and it was good that we got the win for the fans and for ourselves.”

In a game where the Lakers never forfeited the lead, the Kodiaks nipped at their heels, ringing off four straight goals to cut the 9-4 lead into a one-goal deficit in the third period.

Austin Hasen and Turner Evans scored for the Peterborough in the last 2:15 of the game to put the game out of reach for Cobourg.

Goaltender Mike Poulin stopped 45 out of 54 shots on goal to get his first home win on the season.

The Lakers’ next game is unknown as MSL is finalizing the league schedule. The league has been unable to play for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Major Series Lacrosse Postpones 2022 Season

The Century 21 Peterborough Lakers will have to wait a little longer to hit the floor as Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) has been postponed for the 2022 season announced by the league on Thursday.

The following was a statement released by Doug Luey, MSL Commissioner:

It is with tremendous disappointment that Major Series Lacrosse must postpone the start of the 2022 season. The financial risk brought on by potential litigation is just too great to overcome by both our privately and community operated teams.

We will continue to work towards a resolution to bring our teams, players, officials and in particular our fans back to the floor as soon as the risk is minimized.

Our teams were looking forward to building on last year's extremely successful MSL Classic. This tournament resulted in a broadcast deal that would have shown every MSL game through the 2022 Mann Cup across Canada, in addition to most games being shown via webcast. It also yielded a national sponsorship deal.

In both cases, we are unable to make those announcements until a resolution is made. MSL will not be issuing any further comment on the matter until all stakeholders have come to a satisfactory resolution. We want to thank all that have reached out and offered their support during these difficult times. We can't wait to hit the floor.

The Lakers are three-time defending Mann Cup champions and are seeking a fourth consecutive championship.
