Photos: Barbeques Are Firing Up For the 19th Annual Kawartha Rotary Ribfest

The barbeques are fired up as the 19th Annual Kawartha Rotary Ribfest is underway at Millennium Park from Friday to Sunday.

The event is filled with activities, food and entertainment that will cater to all walks of life according to Susan Zambonin, Habitat for Humanity CEO.

“We have four ribbers this year, we have a number of food vendors and other vendors,” she explained. “We have lots of entertainment, we've also added family-friendly entertainment. We have a magician here, face-painting for the kids and colouring.”

Proceeds from the event go towards the Rotary Club of Peterborough Kawartha and its community projects. Their main one includes building a washroom for the Brock Mission.

Rib vendors at the event are Boss Hog’s BBQ, Fat Boys Barbeque, Silver Bullet, Bar-B-Q and Jack the Ribber. Other food options from the vendors include brisket, pulled pork, chicken and cornbread.

Other vendors available are Corn, Beaver Tails, Kettle Curls, Poutine Supreme, Lemonade, Mr. Kettle Corn and Kawartha Buttertart Factory.

Live entertainment with 15 groups are set for the stage throughout the three days.

The following are the operating hours of Ribfest:

  • Friday: Noon to 11 p.m.

  • Saturday: Noon to 11 p.m.

  • Sunday: Noon to 5 p.m.

YES Shelter Receives $50,000 From Rotary Clubs Towards Two Housing Units

The Youth Emergency Shelter (YES) can help their two new housing units after receiving $50,000 from Peterborough Rotary Club and Kawartha Rotary in a cheque presentation outside the shelter on Wednesday afternoon.

The two new housing units are part of YES’ RISE Youth Housing Program. The money will build the units, as well as renovate an existing 12-plex building to allow for the additional capacity. This funding is a part of Rotary’s Centennial Celebrations, helping the community in their 100th year.

The funding is part of a $100,000 pledge with Peterborough Rotary Club committing $75,000 and $25,000 from Kawartha Rotary.

“Many of our members feel very strongly about housing in Peterborough,” said Wayne Harding, Rotary Club of Peterborough president.

“This is a natural fit.” Carl Brown, Kawartha Rotary Club President stated “We are proud of our community involvement with this project and pleased to work with the Peterborough Club to make this important project happen”

“Right now, the homelessness rate in Peterborough is far too high and housing has not become more available or affordable through the pandemic,” said Aimee Le Lagadéc, YES executive director. “We also know that transitional housing is typically required for young people and families exiting homelessness.”

The project will begin this spring and will be completed by the summer of 2023.

The Rotary Club of Peterborough Annual Christmas Auction Will Support Humane Society's New Animal Care Centre

The Rotary Club of Peterborough Kawartha and the Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) announced on Monday the 2021 Kawartha Rotary annual Christmas Auction will support ‘Our Pet Project’, the fundraising campaign for the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre.

“For over 23 years, proceeds from our Christmas auction have benefited many worthwhile community initiatives such as the Nichols Oval Waterpark and capital builds at both Hospice Peterborough and the PRHC,” said Carl Brown, Rotary Club President. “With construction well underway and fundraising ongoing for the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre, we felt it was an important time to support our furry friends through the 2021 auction.”

Last year’s auction raised over $18,000 in support of the YES Youth Transitional Housing Project. The 2021 auction will support the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre with a goal of giving $15,000.

“We are always thrilled when a community partner thinks of our organization and supporting the future of animal wellness. Kawartha Rotary’s Christmas Auction is a double win in that it encourages shopping at local Peterborough businesses while also helping us get even closer to our fundraising goal for the new centre.” said Shawn Morey, Executive Director, PHS.

Construction is underway at 1999 Technology Drive, the site of the new centre and fundraising is currently over $8.5M of its $10M goal.

The online auction goes live on Monday and ends on Sunday, Nov. 28.

Kawartha Rotary Club Book Drive Runs Till The End Of The Month

Until December 31st, the Kawartha Rotary Club is hosting a book drive to help fill the Salvation Army hampers.

Your donation of a new book can be dropped off at in Peterborough at Titles Bookstore (379 George Street North), Chapters (873 Lansdowne Street West), SmithBooks (1145 Chemong Road), and the Peterborough Public Library (345 Aylmer Street), as well as Happenstance (44 Queen Street) in Lakefield.
