The Peterborough Police Service wants to inform the public of a new scam.

Officers are investigating after several similar reports were filed in the last week. In each case, residents in their 70s and 80s were contacted over their landline, and the caller ID showed a financial institution.

The caller says they are from the financial institution and the person’s debit and/or credit cards have been compromised. The bank will send a representative to their house to pick up the cards, PIN and personal information.

To date, over $50,000 has been known to be lost by community members according to the Peterborough Police Service.

Residents are reminded that financial institutions will not send someone to their houses to take their cards or personal information.

If you receive such a call and/or request, hang up immediately and call Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x225 or file an online report.
