Millbrook's Centennial Place Gets 50s Throwback To Celebrate 20th Anniversary
/Classic cars, polka dot dresses and Elvis Presley were alive and well in a 50s-themed party to celebrate the 20th anniversary of AON Inc’s long-term care home Centennial Place in Millbrook with an open house on Wednesday afternoon.
Residents and staff got in the 50s spirit by dressing in era-appropriate clothing to celebrate the milestone. Classic car displays, 50s diner-style food (sliders, sparkling wine and floats) and an Elvis Presley impersonator were all part of the 50s throwback planned out by the staff.
“A lot of population here grew up in the 50s so we thought it would be really nice to bring that back for them,” said Courtney Jilesen, Centennial Place administrator. “It lets them experience some old times again.”
Centennial Place has been recognized municipally and internationally for its retirement residence care.
Matthew Graham, Millbrook Mayor was in attendance and personally congratulated Centennial Place and their staff on their milestone.
“On behalf of the residents in the Township of Cavan-Monaghan, it is my pleasure to congratulate all the residents and staff of Centennial Place in celebrating their 20th anniversary in our Township,” he said. “Centennial Place is such an important part of our community and the village of Millbrook and I especially want to thank all of your staff over these past 20 years for all of their hard work and care for the residents of our community.”

The home was awarded a Three-Year Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities Accreditation Award in November as well as a Registered Nurses Association of Ontario Best Practices Spotlight Organization Award last month.
“We have great staff and a great supportive community,” said Jilesen. “Without them, I don't know if we would have been able to get through the last three years.”
Centennial Place is located at 2 Centennial Ln. in Millbrook.

/Trent University’s café ‘Seasoned Spoon’ is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an event featuring live music, activities, raffles and food to raise money for a cargo trike on March 18.
The event is at the Seasoned Spoon and runs from 5 p.m. to p.m. with tickets at $10. Children’s admission is free.
The trike will aid Trent Vegetable Gardens in making deliveries and will cost anywhere from $2,750 and upwards to purchase.

Meet Luna; Peterborough’s First Baby Born in 2023
/At 5:51 a.m. on Jan. 1, midwife Sarah Tucker delivered Peterborough’s first baby of 2023 at the Kawartha Community Midwives Clinic.
Baby Luna is her parents Anna and Jacob’s second child, making five-year-old Josah a big brother.
Jacob says mom Anna began feeling contractions around 4 a.m., giving birth to a healthy, 6.7 pound baby under two hours later.
“It was an absolute privilege to attend Anna during her birth, as it is with every one of my clients, but a new year with new life is extra special,” said Tucker. “It’s refreshing and invigorating and just sets the tone for the new year.”
Kawartha Community Midwives on Stewart St. provides midwifery care in and around Peterborough.
Two midwives are required for each birth, and Tucker was backed up by midwife Lisa Chappell after the birth of Luna.
“It is an honour to be with someone at one of the most vulnerable times in their life. It’s incredibly humbling to know that people trust me to safely, and lovingly, bring their babies into this world,” said Tucker. “Birth can be so beautiful and normal, it doesn’t have to be scary, and when our clients feel well-supported it takes that fear away.”
Kawartha TV & Stereo Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
/The giant scissors were out to cut the ribbon to celebrate Kawartha TV & Stereo’s 50th anniversary on Monday morning.
In attendance were Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith and Mayor Diane Therrien to commemorate the event. Owner Glenn Stuart and general manager Scott Stuart — who are brothers — had the honours of cutting the ribbon with giant scissors to celebrate the store’s milestone and community involvement.
“We have been a huge supporter of local for years and years and years since day one,” said Scott. “We’ve very proud of that and we will continue that for as long as we can.”
“We all do business with each other,” said Glenn. “We buy from those businesses back and forth and that’s one of the things we do in a small-town atmosphere.”
The store has been reputable for supporting the local communities and city officials have noticed the business’s contribution to Peterborough.
Smith gave a certification to the electronics store to mark the occasion. He mentioned that Kawartha TV & Stereo was one of the first places he visited and made a purchase since moving to Peterborough in 1981.
“The service you have provided has been fantastic,” he said. “It’s a testament to what you have done to this community, the fact that you’ve been here for 50 years.”
“There’s a reason people keep coming back,” said Therrien. “I can’t wait to be here for another 50 years.”
Kawartha TV & Stereo opened in 1971 with 600 square ft. of space on Charlotte Street before moving down the same road with 800 square ft. The store moved again in the mid-1980s to its current location on the corner of Lansdowne Street and Park Street which is known as the “Bargain Corner.”

Today Marks The 17th Anniversary Of The Peterborough Flood: Share Your Memories
/On July 15, 2004, Peterborough experienced 175 mm of rainfall over the city. During the hour between 3:30 am and 4:30 am alone, 78.8 mm came down. All hell broke loose. Cars were floating (and some people were trapped in them), basements and buildings were flooded, roofs collapsed under the weight of the rain. A State of Emergency was declared by Mayor Sutherland. It made national and international news. It was a day people who lived here will never forget. There is even a "City of Peterborough Flood 2004 Fact Sheet" about that day.
