A Powerful FireFit Team At Fleming College Has Been Invited To Canadian Nationals In Calgary

A group of Fleming College Pre-Service Firefighter students have teamed up to compete in the Scott FireFit Combat Challenge, which puts firefighting skills to the ultimate test.

Their success in the 2016 season already has been unprecedented, breaking Fleming records with each competition and putting the group firmly on the map of the sport. With the strongest Fleming team on record, they are taking the leap and working to raise money to get eight members of the self-financed team to Calgary for the Canadian Nationals to be televised by TSN.

The Scott FireFit Challenge is described by Men’s Fitness magazine as “the toughest two minutes in sport” as a result of the strength, aerobic and anaerobic capabilities needed to finish the challenge.

Firefighters and Pre-Service Firefighter college students will compete against the fastest, strongest and most physically fit of Canadian and international fire departments, as they push past physical and mental limits by demonstrating firefighting skills against the clock.

The Fleming Fire Combat Team is comprised of 14 students, including five women. Head coach is Shawna Coulter, a Whitby firefighter and instructor for Fleming College. Several past team members have also joined the coaching contingent to give back to the community and assist new members in achieving personal and athletic success through the sport.

The Scott FireFit Championships is a competition based on firefighting tasks commonly performed in emergency situations. A course comprised of six gruelling physical tasks test the strength, endurance and overall fitness levels of firefighters.

The Fleming 2016 team has taken the scene by storm in individual and relay division categories with five gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 12 bronze medals. For the first time ever in history, the Fleming team has made it to the Gold Medal Open Relay Race not once but four times in a row earning the silver medal in this prestigious category in back-to-back competitions in Port Elgin, Belleville, Napanee and Oshawa.

“I am beyond proud of the team’s outstanding effort and dedication," says Coach Coulter. "It is a huge commitment for these young people and often a juggling act between academic, work and training schedules, but they have taken on the challenge with enthusiasm and positivity. I hit the lottery with this group. Their drive and genuine love for the sport is demonstrated at every practice and at every competition."

Due to not being recognized as an official college sport, the team receives no funding and is 100% self-financed by the students and coaches. To achieve their goal of traveling to Calgary to put their skills to the ultimate test, they are reaching out to the community for help.
