PTBOCanada Featured Post: Peterborough's Canadian Hockey Enterprises Is Global Success Story

CHE Founder Paul Crowley

CHE Founder Paul Crowley

When Paul Crowley’s pro hockey career ended in 1984, he knew that he wanted to stay involved with the game.

Hockey had been such a major part of his life, and Paul wasn’t about to let that go. Three years later, in the summer of 1987, he launched a business that would eventually grow to become one of the world’s leading hockey camp and tournament hosting companies.

Crowley's Peterborough-based Canadian Hockey Enterprises (CHE) located at 727 Lansdowne St. has evolved time and time again in its 29 years of operation to now host camps and tournaments for men, women, boys and girls across Canada, the United States and now in Europe.

Chances are you or someone you know has attended one of their camps or tournaments over the years. Current NHL stars Mike Fisher and Corey Perry were once campers!

Starting out in the basement of his home in Ennismore in 1987, Paul had an old computer, an Austin Mini and an idea. His goal was to host a Christmas hockey camp in his area, and with the help of some of his incredible connections (including Roger Neilson, Doug Gibson and Jamie Hicks), it was an instant success!

He kept dreaming big after this and jumped almost blindly into the adult hockey tournament market. In 1988, he hosted five tournaments across North America in Calgary, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Florida and—in what turned out to be the company saving tournament—Montreal, which catered to an incredible 40 teams and really put CHE on the map!

Thanks to Paul’s connections in the hockey world, he was afforded the opportunity to host an adult fantasy hockey camp in Montreal a little after this time which included the likes of “Mr. Hockey” Gordie Howe, “The Golden Jet” Bobby Hull, and Stan Mikita. This further cemented his company’s place in the camp/tournament world.

After the tournament successes, CHE expanded its camps to include summer kids camps in Ennismore—which expanded in size until they eventually reached capacity and moved to the Evinrude Centre in Peterborough in 1997 where they’ve been hosted ever since.

Camps feature both on and off ice training for all ages, skill levels and desires. Whether your child is looking for power skating coaching, defensive training, puck handling or overall leadership, they have a program for you—with NHL celebrity instructors to assist with! Each summer, they now have more than 1,600 camp participants from around the world coming together to learn from professional players, coaches and scouts about how to improve their individual skills.

After CHE’s move in 1998 to its current head office location in Peterborough at 727 Lansdowne St., things really began to take off and they’ve never looked back.

Satellite offices opened up in Lake Placid, NY; Mont Tremblant, QC; and Canmore, Alta. Tournaments and camps have expanded to now include 10 international camps and 45 international tournaments (both indoor and outdoor) yearly!

CHE’s main focus is to bring the joy of hockey to everyone, year round. In 2002, they expanded to include woman’s and girl’s camps and tournaments which really began to take off in popularity with the success of the Canadian Women’s hockey team!

From top to bottom, CHE is constantly diversifying and evolving to include different minds throughout the company to help with their efforts.

The company includes top notch hockey minds to help with teaching during camps; analytics minds to keep and promote stats during tournaments; marketing minds to assist in promotion; and all around team players who have been around since day one to help keep the company running as it continues to expand!

CHE has more exciting expansion in mind, with plans in the works to also include lacrosse and soccer under the CHE umbrella in the not too distant future.
