The dramatic rescue happened on the weekend in the Kawarthas, and was caught on tape. Three electricians were working at Viamede when they noticed the deer struggling on ice near the open lake.
"Tim Stanley filmed the footage—all three of us work for SRP electric," Jay Wells tells PTBOCanada. "We just sat down for break while working at Viamede Resort. From a distance, we noticed an object struggling on the ice. Unaware of exactly what it was, thinking it was a deer, we set out to investigate further.... Once close by on shore, we were skeptical about going out on the ice to help, as we were unsure the thickness of the ice—as the deer was a couple hundred yards from shore."
But the guys decided the ice was safe and ventured out onto it, and dragged the shaken deer to the shore of the The Glass Cottage (where scenes have been filmed for a movie and soap opera over the years).
"I tried to calm the deer by petting her front leg, letting her know we weren't there to harm her," Wells tells PTBOCanada. "There were indents of her legs being frozen in the ice. Then we basically just dragged her by the hind legs to safety."
The guys and the deer made it safely back to shore, where the deer stumbled abit to regain its footing and then ran off.
