PTBOCanada Feature Post: 5 Ways Peterborough Is Becoming Hub For Water Tech In Ontario

Did you read our post about Peterborough being one of Canada’s new up and coming Tech Cities and think, “Really? I’d like to know more!” Did you know that Ontario is one of the Top 3 Places in the world for water technologies, and that Peterborough & the Kawarthas has the expertise, infrastructure and business support to lead the future of how we solve the world’s water problems? Pretty big possibilities, we know!

Below are five reasons Peterborough is on its way to becoming the hub for water technologies in Ontario...

1. It's Shaped By Our Connection To Water
The Peterborough region has been shaped by its connection to water. The watershed has impacted the sectors of the region’s diverse economy—highlighting opportunities that exist in manufacturing, tourism and innovation in water and wastewater technologies. With the Trent-Severn Waterway flowing through the region and 151 lakes in the County of Peterborough, our resources lend themselves naturally to the water sector. Not to mention Little Lake, the Otonabee River, and Jackson’s Creek!

2. Innovative Minds
There is a growing cluster of innovators in the water technologies sector that have led to a culture of entrepreneurship. Companies like Aclarus, Noble Purification Inc., and SGS Canada Ltd. are putting Peterborough on the map.

There are world-class research facilities here. Trent University’s Water Quality Centre—since opening in 1997—has had over $20 million in investments put into it and is seen as the best facility in the world of its kind, with benefits including access to very specialized equipment and a unique natural laboratory just outside their classrooms on the Otonabee River. Local entrepreneurs also benefit from Fleming College’s Centre for Alternative Water Treatment (CAWT).

3. Infrastructure
The city have made the investments to succeed. In the City & County of Peterborough, there have been $55 million in recent wastewater infrastructure improvements. We are also home to the most advanced facility of its kind in Canada at the Norwood Wastewater Treatment Facility. Peterborough has access to real world demonstration sites. One example is the Peterborough Pilot Plant for Water Quality and Treatment Optimization.

4. Supportive Business Ecosystem
Development in the water technologies sector is well-supported by influencers in the local community. Peterborough’s water technologies entrepreneurs find the support they need to succeed from early stage technology to business development. This type of support is crucial for future success!

5. Market Opportunities
Peterborough is also incredibly well-positioned geographically—centrally located between major players in Southern Ontario and in Quebec. The map is in our favour!

So what does this all mean from an investment standpoint? It means that we are harnessing our commitment to clean water into world-class solutions that can transform the way we manage water, and that there are opportunities here for innovators.

Peterborough Economic Development asked local leaders in Peterborough’s Water Technologies sector where they fit into the local supply chain and how Peterborough helps them succeed. Here is what they had to say in the video below...

http://www.PeterboroughED.ca/water The water sector is one of Peterborough's key economic drivers, and has been for decades. The region has an abundance of rich resources available, including 152 lakes, countless rivers. But it is not just geography that drives Peterborough's water sector.
