PTBOCanada Featured Post: Kawartha Golf & Country Club's Exciting Revitalization Project
/One of Peterborough and the surrounding areas most hallowed sporting institutions is about to get a major face lift in both a physical sense and how it models itself as a business. Kawartha Golf & Country Club (KGCC), which is known by locals as one of the best golf experiences, is looking to take a step up into the national spotlight with its coming changes—which are generating a lot of buzz in town.
On June 26nd, 2014, Kawartha Members voted overwhelmingly (92%) in favour of a complete revitalization project. This project will see the club move forward with upgraded practice facilities, a new membership structure designed for all golfers, elimination of the debenture system used to purchase the club from GE in 1983, and most notably, a new 25,000 square foot state of the art clubhouse designed to meet all the needs of its current and future members.
Club General Manager Kevin Greenwood is relatively new to KGCC, having taken over the position in January 2014—yet he has already had a major impact at the club working with Club Pro Mark Ahrens (2013 Ontario Professional of the Year winner), the Board of Directors, and existing and new members. His extensive golf knowledge combined with a background in golf course management have led him to becoming a big picture thinker with a goal to move KGCC to even better National Recognition.
Currently KGCC has these impressive rankings across the country...
• Top 5 Courses in Canada (Canadian Golf Magazine) for Public Green Fees $75 - $99 (2015)
• Ranked 18th in the Classic Course Category by GolfWeek Magazine (2014)
• Ranked 13th Best Course to Play in Canada with Public Access (2014)
Kevin and the team at KGCC know that with its restructuring, those rankings will only climb higher because the potential is already there.
A Stanley Thompson designed course which was originally built in 1932, KGCC sits on roughly 180 acres between Clonsilla Ave. and Sherbrooke St. The property’s original farmhouse from the 1800s still exists, but has been expanded and forms what is now part of the clubhouse. The course itself features 6,464 yards of pristine landscape, is impeccably maintained, and a challenge to even the lowest of handicapped golfers with thousands of century old trees, plenty of bunkers, and water hazards that come into play.
The changes coming to KGCC will be swift and will have an incredibly positive effect both on the course layout and its potential to house more events such as weddings and conferences.
The sale of 22.54 acres along Clonsilla Ave. has already been completed, and is currently in the due diligence stage. This will allow for the following physical changes to the course to take place:
• Expanded practice facility (range)
• Reversal of the nines, back to the original Thompson design
• Two new holes to be built by Stanley Thompson expert architect Ian Andrew
• Construction of a new state-of-the-art Clubhouse
With its new, forward-thinking membership structure, KGCC will now provide more options for various member types, while maintaining the member focus it has always had. Its professional staff is second to none, with Club Professional Mark Ahrens and his staff making Member Services the best in the province.
With the market continuously changing and players becoming younger and younger, the course is shifting its focus towards creating various membership levels and opportunities. These details—which are sure to surprise many in both a monetary and playing amount sense—can be found here.
If you’re looking for a national quality golf course with affordable membership choices—whether you’re a seasoned vet who plays regularly or you’re simply a casual player—look no further than KGCC! Come see what this hidden gem has to offer.
