For Nicole Truman, the thought of coming back home to work was always on her mind. The Peterborough native, who grew up in the city’s north end, has become the latest lawyer to join the growing firm of Fox Law located at 140 King St in the J.J. Turner Building downtown. Nicole couldn’t be any happier with her decision!

After graduating from Adam Scott, Nicole moved on to complete a degree in Business Administration at the Wilfrid Laurier School of Business and Economics. While at Laurier, she was accepted into their prestigious co-op program where she had placements with the government, a large multi-national corporation and even a small start-up. Upon graduating from Laurier, she accepted a position with Canadian Tire Corporation at their head office in Toronto.

With the call to come home ever present, Nicole returned to Peterborough in 2008 to work as the Manager of the Business Advisory Centre with the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPA EDC)–now known as Peterborough Economic Development—where she provided assistance to small businesses as they were starting up or looking to grow. Upon her return to Peterborough along with her fiancé, Peter—who is also originally from the city—they purchased a home in the west end.

In 2010, Nicole began Law School at Queen's University. She completed her articles at a large Bay Street law firm in Toronto with the hope of finding an opportunity to practise law back in Peterborough. That opportunity presented itself this year with Bill Fox extending Nicole an invitation to join his firm—which she happily accepted!

Business Law is the specialty at Fox Law. They also focus on real estate, powers of attorney, wills and estate administration. Since starting at the firm in July, Nicole has had the opportunity to work with clients to incorporate their businesses, and to assist business owners in succession planning and in buying other businesses. Nicole has also assisted clients in purchasing their first homes, drafted wills and powers of attorney, and has worked in conjunction with local accountants in the creation of family trusts.

When Nicole went to law school, she envisioned herself working at a smaller firm where she would have the opportunity to interact with clients on a daily basis and have an impact on their daily lives/the operation of their businesses. Fox Law was her choice because of the opportunity to work with and learn from Bill Fox; the opportunity to work in a small firm where the staff and lawyers work as a team in a collaborative fashion; and to work at a firm where there is such a strong focus on the needs of the client.

All too often we hear about success stories like Nicole leaving behind their past and moving on to the big city to continue on the corporate pathway. Nicole saw things differently however, and is pleased to be able to work in a community that other people visit on the weekends to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and in the summer to cottage and vacation.

This is the 3rd in a 3-part series on Fox Law in Peterborough. Read our first two posts here and here.
